Cars that don't deteriorate badly after 7 years 1 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I'm thinking in particular of Which? (cars up to two years old, iirc) and JD Power (basically 3 year old cars) and ADAC (cars up to 6 years old sorted by year). The implication of HJ's comment that sparked the Honda Jazz thread was that Jazzes held up very well for 6 or 7 years, and then deteriorated very suddenly. -
£7k for runabout for sister with new baby! 1 May 2011 (Forum)
Hi all, My sister has just passed her driving test aged 34 & is due to give birth in a few weeks!! Her hubby has a work car, Volvo estate, and their old motor is a 2002 Golf 1.6 mark 4 which is showing it's age. I might advise her initially to run around in the Golf untill it packs in (it has a few niggles and on a 10 year old car from VW it won't necessarily be worth spending money & hassle trying to repair) She has a notional budget of £7k for a replacement and requirements are as follows: * A main dealer car - she & hubby have no expertise whatsoever & want the peace of mind of dealing with a dealership * No more than 3 years old, must be reliable, not worth buying an older car they don't want the hassle * Only used for local trips & very occasional longer journeys with hubby I would suggest something like a Focus as they seem to be well thought of, safe, and plenty to choose from. -

Car prices versus region 4 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Finally, six years ago, when I needed a van (I WAS white van man) I saw people buying vans at auction in Bedford and putting them in the next day in Enfield and getting more for them. So, as my examples are all pretty old, does anyone have a more up-to-date view on the regional market? Partly for the sale of the old buffer's car, but mainly because I'm interested. -
Why did some companies use Dizzy's until recently? 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
All my bangers have always had electronic ignition and all the Fords I have ever known have had it (I was too young to do anything under the bonnet of Cortinas etc) but some Vauxhalls and Rover still used the dizzy's until fairly recently even with proper fuel injection. The system seems really old fashioned to me, my ten year old car dosn't even have HT leads there is no need for them. So why did some cars still use this silly old fashioned system called Dizzy? All I ever remember about distributors is that you had to constantly spray WD40 on the points and they were very prone to damp. -
xsara hdi unrefined 15 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi there recently got a xsara 2.0 hdi 90 and basically i feel that its a little unrefined, the throttle sometimes feels like an on/off switch which can lead to a bit of an all or nothing jerky progression, i know that the throttle is electrically wired to the ecu and not a cable that goes straight to the pump (ah the good old days), so its bound to feel different (the old car was a 1.9td xantia, fantastic car!), but i feel as though you have to work very hard with the vehicle to keep it going along with smooth progression! -
Mazda 2 - Tree falling on car 24 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Car needs a new windscreen but also a new radiator and some repairs to the engine and minor bodywork - cost probably £1,500 plus hire car. Insurance is a big problem as it my son's second accident within 2 years. -
Legislative threat to older cars 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I don't know how serious this threat is, but it is all too conceivable that some politico or other is pursuing it. The environmental impact of new-car manufacture seems somewhat understated below. As all of my cars are over ten years old, I'd be grateful to anyone who signs up. (Originally found at www.mbclub.co.uk.) BMW - Upgrading Nightmare 19 May 2016 (Forum)
A friend recently bought a one year old Prestige car from a maindealer and traded in his . ..BMW. It soon became apparent that the new car had problems and this was confirmed by a local main dealer of the prestige brand. My friend was offered the opportunity to get the car repaired but asked for his old car back and a full refund. -
Insurance cover while changing car 3 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Hi, I think I've found a replacement car which i should get in the next few doors from private seller. I'll be putting my old car on ebay ,with no reserve so hopefully a sale in 10 days or so. What is the best way of staying legal regarding insurance for the short period while I have 2 cars ? -
Any - No MOT For Vehicles Over 40 Years Old 22 Nov 2017 (Forum)
I recall older cars having no or one brake lights from new and only one headlight opeating on dip. Many people had to uprate the lighting and added indicator systems to make cars legal and easier to integrate with modern traffic. -

Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 01 1.0 Twelve month old battery: recharge and fit 5 Jan 2010 (Forum)
A brand new battery has been sitting on my garage floor for the last 12 months. It was bought in error for my previous Micra and was never used (it turned out that my old car needed a new alternator). As the battery on my current Micra seems to be a bit sluggish in turning the engine over, I charged the "brand new" battery up 2 days ago, on overnight charge. Today, I fitted the new battery. -
Rover 75 ? 8 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I'm interested in a 2.0 Club Manual and have a budget of about £13K. They seem a bit of bargain considering this will get me a two-year old with reasonable mileage. Are they likely to depreciate heavily and it's worth me hanging on another few months for a three year old for much less ? Are high mileages young cars preferable to lower mileage older cars ? -
50s British Cars in Cuba 14 Jan 2006 (Forum)
The vast majority of motors are 50s U.S. and Ladas but there are a few British motors . I saw an Austin Healey with a Lada engine and a few old Fords, a Zephre 6 and a Prefect not much signs of rust but all different mechanics under the bonnet. All these old motors are belching out thick smoke making the pollution in Havana horrendous. Cubans are not permitted to buy new cars even if they could afford to so any modern vehicles you see are owned by the state. -
Mini Cooper S 1st service, or lack of! 18 Apr 2005 (Forum)
My dads Cooper S is just over a year old and when he rang the local dealer that he bought it from they said it didn't need it's 1st service until the car had done 10,000 miles. Bearing in mind that it has only done 4 - 5k in just over a year that will make the car over 2 years old before it has a service. -
Battery Chargers 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Having just come out of hospital after 4 weeks I tried to start the car, battery flat.Nice man from RAC started it for me.I gave it a stationary run at variable revs for about 45mins,as I cannot drive the car due to shoulder op for a few weeks I have done this every other day now three times,so battery should be ok now.I have one of the older type battery chargers i.e.low & high charge its even has 6&12 volt option, could I still use old chargers on 5yr old car with to-days modern technology? -
EUI silliness again 27 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I read that it could now cost £300 to dispose of a scrap car under the EU End-of-Life Vehicle Directive. Not content with causing the littering of our countryside with old fridges by trying to solve a "problem" which does not exist, they now want up to 85% of old cars to be re-cycled.
