Running costs vs delivery charges 16 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Having recently acquired a retail business, I am increasingly being asked to deliver low value (£20/£40) bulky items after work.Depreciation on my 2.4d VW Transorter is minimal after 7 years, but it still requires fuel and servicing!I do not wish to turn away custom, but I refuse to deliver free of charge. My actual fuel cost is around 13p per mile, but wear & tear have to be taken into consideration, so I propose to charge 30p per mile, which includes my time. -
Mondeo to Escort engine conversion 17 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Put them together and away we go, well almost, the turbo inlet is slightly different (used old turbo) the fuel pump is different (so used old one), engine fitted, everything is bolted on but... It will not start, it is though the fuel is not getting to the pump or from pump to engine, forgotten which. All obvious connections, pipes, lines etc, have been connected. -
Smelly Peugeot Diesel 307 8 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Following its first major service it intermittently stinks badly of diesel in the cabin, most consistently after running normally a while from cold, until it's at least half-warm, then pulling up at a junction. Fumes clear on moving off. May recur at later junctions, but less. Garage says 'no fuel system leak' and the exhaust is OK. I suspect an unburnt fuel build up somewhere on the inlet side of the engine which then blows back. I don't think its fuming all the time and I just pick it up in the cabin when I stop. -
non start punto 29 Sep 2004 (Forum)
any suggestions on the cause of a non start punto, its a v reg mk 2 1200 8 valve with 10k on clock, checked for belt snapped,ok we have fuel and lots of it, we have spark, checked all engine management fuses. Iam informed before it packed in, it was running poor, no power spluttering etc, then it broke down. We have good fuel pressure at the rail although not tested with a pressure meter. -
What type of H.T.Leads? 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
i have a dual fuel car recently it has started missing slightly when i gently accelerate, once it gets past 2000rpm there's no problemit goes like hell with no misses at all! i am going to fit new plugs(NGK) and i also want replace the H.T.Leads as someone has told me this will likely be the cause and that i should fit 8mm raceing leads but they cannot remember the make of these leads, he also says that the people who make the leads specify that they are up to the job when it comes to Lpg as you need a bigger spark to ignite the fuel. -
peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Unleaded ?? 5 Apr 2004 (Forum)
From various pug websites it seems that only the later 1.9's fitted with catalytic converters will run on 95 ron unleaded petrol (and have a lower BHP), where the one'a prior to about 1992 will only run 98 ron fuel. Can the older 1.9 pugs be converted to run on normal 95 ron unleaded or will I be doomed to forever fill up this car with super unleaded or fuel additive. If you know of a web link or a garage that could convert (and a rough estimate of the price involved) then please let me know. -
Fiat Uno noise at rear ? 19 Oct 2003 (Forum)
(This is not the rear springs clunking, it only does that when cornering at low speed) Car is a standard 93 Uno 1.0ie (fuel injected) in overall good condition and in daily use. At first I thought it was the wheel spanner contacting the inside rim of the spare wheel but this is not the case. I now suspect that it is something to do with the float mechanism inside the fuel tank. -
Rover 75 - diesel engine problem 19 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The problem became worse and eventually it was diagnosed as a faulty pressure sensor in the high pressure fuel rail. After replacement the engine was fine. A few weeks later, in July, the identical problem returned while I was on holiday. The local dealer misdiagnosed the problem as fuel contamination but the sensor had failed again. -
Fitting Dellorto twin 40s to a 1.8 golf 12 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I know I'll need some of the obvious things like linkage, inlet manifold, possibly new throttle cable but will I have to uprate the fuel system i.e. the fuel pump or will the existing one suffice as the car is already carbed??? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance... -
Punto uneven idle 7 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I've got a 1998 Fiat Punto 75 SX 1.2, multipoint fuel-injection and 34k miles. From time to time the idle speed starts to surge up and down, and the fuel injection warning lighr comes on, although generally speaking not at the same time. I don't have access to a code reader, but I'm guessing that it's the idle speed stepper motor. -
gremlins in trooper enigine! 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
It is fine when it starts up, except for a burst of black reek from the exhaust(probably from all the cranking). Also if the hand fuel pump in the engine bay is tried before cranking it is soft for the first two or three pumps before it becomes stiff, suggesting possibly that the fuel is running back? It is fine to start any other time, just has bother when left overnight, or for a long period. -
Astra 1.7D Grey/Black smoke 17 Jan 2003 (Forum)
hi i have just bought the above vehicle and im a little concerened at the amount of grey/black smoke that comes from the exhaust on normal and hard acceleration. i have had the injector pump set up properly by a specialist and had an oil and filter change but it still seems to persist. The specialist suggested that i ran some injector cleaner through the fuel tank to clean possible deposits from the engine components but this hasnt worked either. i have read on various forums that the injectors could possibly be worn and may need replacing and to also renew the fuel filter as this can sometimes cause the prob. -
Omega fuel tank woes ? 3 Jan 2003 (Forum)

Harse running 15 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The garage had rechecked the engine and run some diagnostics but no fault found. I've run a tank of loaded injection cleaner and different fuels. Tick over and starting are perfect, and fuel consumption as before 34/37 mpg. Lambda probe tested OK and all pipes etc are correct. Any ideas welcome Thanks Peter -
Audi 100 quattro 1989 cold starting. 13 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I have checked the cold start valve (engine cold)which seems to be working, it delivers a strong cone shaped amount of fuel everytime. I was going to check the warm up valve but according to the manual this device is to richen the fuel mixture when the engine is running and warming up so I dont think that its anything to do with that. -
Merc extended warranty 8 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Makes you wonder why we are all now being told to use lower viscosity oils. Is it mainly to reduce the fuel consumption figures also, to the detriment of engine life? -
Engine chirrup 27 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I initially thought this could be the engine ECU boost pressure limiter kicking in, but l am also wondering if the fuel pump is unable to meet a sudden increase in fuel demand. Basically l don't know. Any info would be gratefully received. Dan -
VW's again 15 Mar 2002 (Forum)
thanks p.s i thought about dirty injectors, a build up of muck somewhere in the system, some kind of malfunctioning sensor in the fuel pump, air bubbles (although there are only one or two)??? -

air con 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
This might sound like a silly question but in terms of using air con economically as well as looking after the system, is it better to keep it on all the time when needed in hot weather? Does switching it off then back on again every so often on a journey to keep fuel consumption down do it any harm? (I have read previous threads about fuel costs and air con and know you don't all agree on this one - and I also know air con should be used at least once a month throughout the year to keep the condensor?
