ford focus alternator 13 May 2005 (Forum)
I run a 51 plate Focus 1.6 Zetec with 48000 miles. The alternator just packed up. First warning was battery light flicking on and off whilst driving, then the car failed completely on the road. Paid £200 to an independent garage to supply and fit new one. -
60's VW Camper sounds 8 May 2005 (Forum)
Only just motoring content, but I'm running out of ideas. (sorry mods) Little brother has just bought a '60s VW camper imported from California in reasonably good nick. He (and I) were growing up in the 60's and I was going to make up a CD compilation for him when he and his mrs go off camping in the beast. -
Rover 414i spark plug change 22 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I doesnt look like the plugs I've come across before where you take off the cover and unscrew the plugs. There an injection unit running across the top of this lot. Any help for a novice like myself is much appreciated. Regards, Dave -
Don't do it! 4 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Today I was walking and got a better look. It was a couple of blokes laying tarmac on someone's driveway. The engine was running, and on top of it was laid a 25kg polythene bag of tarmac being heated. The ambient temperature was about 3 or 4 deg.C., and it started snowing heavily shortly afterwards. I trust that fellow backroomers were not involved. -
Megane 1.6 tappetty noise. 26 Feb 2005 (Forum)
The camshaft looks fine, and I tweaked the rocker clearance a little which made things a little better; but it is still too noisy. Has anyone any suggestions to what I could do? The engine runs fine, but I'm trying to sell the car, but this noise is not appealling to buyers. -
Trade-In 'Etiquette' 10 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I will be trading my faithful car in at a dealer on Friday for a newer model. What should I do with the tax disc. It has a fair few months left to run so is worth a bit. It was not mentioned when we were discussing prices etc, but they did ask when the tax and MOT ran out. Am I expected to leave it on the car or is it mine to get a refund on? -
buying new, or second hand 22 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Living in Montpellier in France, i want to splash out soonish and get a reliable motor, something extremely economic and cheap to run. Diesel is a must. But want to avoid garrage bills and costly servicing. Was thinking either about a credit option or saving up and paying cash on a used or cheapish new motor. Plan on keeping the motor for quite some years, between 5 and 10. -
Computer related questions. Volume 38 16 Jan 2005 (Forum)
When I choose normally, I then get another screen asking if I want to start with Windows XP. After saying yes to that, everything then goes on as it should and it runs with no problems. What have I stuffed up, and how can I recover? -
Peugeot 406 (90) TDI- MPG low 14 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I have just bought a 406 (90) hdi, 35k, 3 years old. It is a nice drive, no obvious issues and suprisingly spritely. However, on long motorway runs I am only getting 40 mpg, I was expecting 55-60, and the tech data indicates 62. It is overdue a service. Any ideas - clogged injectors / air filter - could these impact the mpg as drastically as this, or do I have a real problem? -
Ford Focus - speedo/rev counter fault 20 Dec 2004 (Forum)
the speedo and rev counter have both shot round to maximum, then gone back to normal. The car starts fine, runs fine and instruments work ok. Is this a knonw quirk, a fault, the cold causing problems or a sign of something more sinister developing? We've had the car 2 years and never seen this before. -
Leaky Golf Mk 3 4 Dec 2004 (Forum)
We have 'hosed' it and it seems to be dripping in just past the door towrads the fron of the car. Last weekend we took off the plastic trim that runs down the side of the wind screen and bodged some silicon type seal stuff where we thought it might be coming in but it is still leaking . The door seal appears to be sound. Any ideas from experience please. -
Last Weeks Poll. Spare Wheel Choice. 30 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Would you prefer to have.... 1. a full-sized spare wheel 2. a space-saver wheel 3. no spare wheel, but have a can of foam to get home with 4. nothing, because I have run-flat tyres 5. I have no preference to any of the above -
Stuttering Mk2 Mondeo 14 Nov 2004 (Forum)
These problems have gradually been getting more noticeable over the last 10,000 miles. Apart from this, the engine runs well and average fuel economy is about 34 mpg. Any thoughts on the snatching? Many thanks. -
VWs and petrol grades 27 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Reading the sales brochures for new VWs, most seem to have a disclaimer next to the engine description. Paraphrasing, "Thanks to anti-knock technology you can run this on 95 Ron petrol". Does this imply that using anything other than super unleaded is cutting corners in a way that could come back to haunt you? Or have the cars really been built for ordinary, and super would be pointless/damaging? -
Electrical Problem - Astra Mk III 9 Aug 2004 (Forum)
None of the 4 door switches will light the lamp and nor will the Pull On, lighting switch. Rather than strip the thing of its linings looking for the wiring loom runs, has anyone any ideas about this type of problem from previous experience ?? -
Buying advice - a 4 wheel drive for ... 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Folks, We need a little advice. We are looking a for a small diesel 4 wheel drive car for commuting that will be cheap to run and will get us to work in the harsh winter here in north east Scotland. We don?t really want to spend a lot of money but rather than give a budget we just want to hear ideas. It doesn't have to be new ( it can be any age in fact) just as long as it meets the above criteria. -
1998 Nissan Micra starting bearing noise 17 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I have a runabout Micra in Madeira and when I start the car from cold I get a "scraping" bearing noise which disappears after several minutes of running the engine. If the engine is warm the noise does not occur when the car is restarted. Its hard to get a garage to look at it because getting there the engine is now hot -so no problem to listen too and there are language problems. -
oil choice for a classic porsche 911 7 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I've just bought this car as a project. It is still a good runner but the bodywork is a mess. the oil pressure is running a little low, unsuprising after 120k and 30 years of wear. I have no idea what oil is in at the mo but its good and black and probs needs changing. what oil would you guys recommend for a moderate miles 30 year old 911 engine FYI I'm getting about 22psi at 2200 when I should be getting about 30-35ish thanks -
Oil Level on Golf TDI '96 1 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I check my oil levels regularly but it never seems to go below the recommended level. I usually check it about 10 mins after a run. I have also checked it when cold but don't seem to get different readings. The oil light hasn't flashed or anything but it just seems a bit disconcerting. Any ideas anyone? Thanks. -
ford mondeo oil consumption 22 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I am of the opinion that one or more piston rings have failed, but none of the sites I have visited have recorded any similar problems, although another friend commented how he has suffered the same fault. Other than the usual Mondeo problems, is this a known fault? No running problems recorded.
