  • Trip imminent - best route to Dover ? 20 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Arrowheads in the soil on the Somme at Agincourt are quivering cos the Sat-nav has locked onto them and colonies of algae in the fuel filter are quaking in their boots at the thought of their French counterparts coming on board, at the next fill up. Setting off tomorrow AM. Any suggestions for the best current route from South of Leeds to the Eastern docks?
  • 10p per minute 31 Aug 2008 (Forum)
So over the last few weeks of trying driving at 'normal' speeds, driving without exceeding the speed limit, driving at the speed limit -10% (asbestos suit on), obviously taking account of traffic conditions, etc. The end result was that each minute added to the total journey time saved 10p on the total fuel cost for that journey.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Glow-Plug light flashing & car loses power 7 Aug 2008 (Forum)
My car has had a replacement reclaimed engine (V reg), a reconditioned fuel pump and a new cam-belt earlier this year. The car starts okay but after driving a while the glow plug flashes and it loses power. I was able to restart it, however the same thing happened after a short while.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1994 1.8 Intermittent starting problem 22 Jul 2008 (Forum)
However, on these occasions it will start immediately if you use jump leads, or bump start it, which seems to rule out fuel supply problems. Anyone any ideas? robertk
  • Efficient petrol engines - suggestions? 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
With the petrol / diesel price differential getting worse instead of better as it should in the summer months, it might be heloful if between us we could come up with examples of particularly fuel-efficient petrol engines - clearly not the 1.6 Ford Focus as the current thread shows! I'll kick off with: Honda Jazz - a hard worked 1339 cc engine but people seem to get mid to high 40s with ease New (08 model) Mini - SWMBO's Cooper does 40 mpg in town and 46 on a long run, about 5 mpg better than the'06 Mini One she had before.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Diesel (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.7 Injection Pump re-programme 19 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone know whether a re-conditioned fuel injection pump for a 1999 Astra TD (gm engine) will need re-programming once fitted? Vauxhall parts guy said he wasn't sure, but possibly due to the injection ecu built into the unit. I didnt think (hoping!)

  • How to save on Diesel 12 May 2008 (Forum)
I've been away for a while (as you may have noticed) but back now and Cor!!! hasn't the price of fuel gone up. Phew... Anyway, needed to the fill the Trajet and SWMBO said, lets try the small station around the corner that has a biodiesel pump. I was reluctant as its usually got a @soory, pump not in use' collar around the nozzle, but this afternoon - Hooray - not only was there biodiesel to buy, but it was 104.9ppl, a saving of a at least 16ppl over local Shell stations; there are no others except Tesco which is not competitive.
  • Vauxhall Meriva A MPV (2003 - ) - low petrol lights up 3 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I can hear the changeover occur. Are my expectations too high, I was anticipating using very little fuel or is there a problem? My vehicle has less than 500 miles on the clock.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 2001 GT TDi - Instrument Display Fault 21 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I have a 51 plate VW Golf GT TDI (115 bhp) and the instrument display is not fully working: The Rev counter is fine - but the speedo all of a sudden doesn't work, the fuel gauge goes to zero on corners, the temp gauge is intermittent. I have noticed a small bladed 10amp fuse keeps tripping on the fuse panel. Slot #7 on the little diagram. Any one got any idea whether the display and the fuse are linked and what could be causing this?
  • Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - 98 1.4 Won't re-start following cut-out. 25 Nov 2007 (Forum)

  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 2002 130TDi sport - Blowing smoke 25 Oct 2007 (Forum)
But i have noticed that the car blows smoke when pulling away at low speeds or accelerating from 15-20 mph following an overun period. Also the fuel consumption seems worse according to the computer (which was reset following service). It seems to be a little high on oil , could that do it ? I have only done very short runs since the belt change .
  • Porsche Boxster 986 + Boxster S (1996 - 2004) - 2003 - 2.7 litre. Which petrol is best to use? 11 Oct 2007 (Forum)
My dealer says just use any unleaded but the manual seems to infer that the higher RON is better. Does it really make the difference that the petrol companies say in fuel economy, efficiency and power? I'd be interested to hear your opinion. Mike
  • Diesel load v additives 2 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Having had the use of diesel cars, trucks, farm tractors, and marine engines, in my experience the operators / engineers invariably say that the engines run smoother after a full load run when they have been lightly loaded for a period. Does this clear out of soot have a similar effect as a fuel additive. I make a point of accelerating up a steep hill or motorway slip road if I have been pottering around for a few days and have produced some spectacular smoke, my current car (2.0 tdci) doesnt smoke given this treatment, modern technology?
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 1997 1.4 Energy 8v - Misfire in cylinder No. 1 19 Aug 2007 (Forum)
My local garage has checked leads, replaced spark plugs, swapped coils 1 & 3 for 2 & 4. Then checked for compression, checked injectors for fuel and finally removed head, where a fault in inlet manifold gasket was found. Reassembled engine with new gasket in inlet and head gasket, BUT still misfiring. Can this be electronic, as the garage does not have diagnostic gear?
  • ECU problem - Ford Focus tdci 27 Jul 2007 (Forum)
My 03 plate Focus 1.8 tdci broke down last week and after a week and a half of trying to figure out the problem, the garage has told me it is the ecu which controls the immobiliser on the fuel pump. Said they'd only ever seen one like it before. They've got to import the part as there's none in the country. I've been quoted £1,100 to repair the problem. Does this sound right? I'm a complete girl when it comes to cars, so I'm a bit worried about being ripped off.
  • Corsa '02' ticking noise. I'm baffled... 15 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Could be at the drivers end of the dash ? Could be in the wing cavity or bulkhead area ? If it was an old BL car, I would say that the fuel pump was sticking..... I'm baffled and getting rather iritated..... Thanks for any ideas, Sutters.
  • Yaris Diesel Engine Light 4 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Could the oxygen sensor be damaged by using additives such as Redxx? We might have put too much in the fuel. Normally we only put 1/3 of the bottle into a full tank of diesel. However, last week we put in 1/2 bottle. Any thoughts please?
