  • Cleaning alloy wheels 1 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Says on a WD40 tin that you can clean alloys with it but I'm a bit worried about getting a nice coating of it going through onto the brake discs! Probably the cheapest and simplest methods are the best. Any tried and trusted remedies out there? No frustrated Betterware reps please :-)
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 97 1.8 petrol - engine cutting out 7 Sep 2007 (Forum)
It's recently started to cut out on me as I slow down to stop. Just before it cuts out I hear a squealing sound like the brakes. It starts up again straight away. Any ideas? Thanks. s
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - Headlight adjustment 1 Sep 2007 (Forum)
My Pug has just failed its MOT 'cos the drivers side head light beam is too high compared to the near side, can you tell me how to adjust it. Also..... The brake comp arm is seized any thoughts how I can free this off. Thanks to you all for looking.
  • Error codes - why not display directly? 31 May 2007 (Forum)
Is it another way of extracting money from drivers?? I think in BMW X5, dash displayes message like "Check brake light" etc. I think depending on manufacturers, dealers charge from £30 to £100 just to diagnose the error code!!!
  • Kwik Fit + pads and discs 10 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Advert in one of today's tabloids in which Kwik Fit are saying that if they fit you new brake discs and pads you will never pay for replacements so long as you own the car (Terms and conditions apply). When I asked them about replacements some weeks ago they were the same price as the Main Agent but with this offer they would be worth considering.
  • S reg 1.3 Ka - very sluggish 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Was being overtaken uphill by lorries on the A23, having to change down just to make it up some of 'em... Had a quick look to make sure brakes aren't binding or incorrectly adjusted, nothing hot or obviously amiss. Belongs to girlfriend, 24,000 miles, been standing for few months but was same before that she says. Any ideas please? Simon.

  • Clio slow speed squeak 9 Jun 2006 (Forum)
At very low speeds (i.e. crawling in traffic in first gear) my Clio squeaks. This happens when the brakes are not in use. The car is 3 years old and has done 33k. I thought that it could be the wheel bearings. Perhaps it is too early for these to become worn and the noise is much more a squeak than a rumble.
  • Auto Transmission problem - Mondeo 1997 3 Jun 2006 (Forum)
It doesn't change to 2nd or 4th gear and the O/D light flashes. The garage told me that the 2nd and 4th brake band needs changing. My warranty should cover this but wear and tear is excluded. Can you tell me if this should be classed as a mechanical fault or wear and tear? How much should the repair be approximately?
  • Inspired by biofuel? 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My local paper reports this week the case of a man driving with vegetable oil instead of hydraulic fluid in his brake system. He used it ?by mistake?. Two garages had told him the car was a death trap, but he drove on. The police caught up with him when he was driving with four kids in the car. He caught a book lobbed in his direction by the magistrates, who also referred him to a higher court for more of the same.
  • Micra 3 door K11 5800 mls -- how much? 29 May 2006 (Forum)
Well maintained, such as is needed for such low milage -- oil changed, antifreeze changed at 3 years, brake fluid at 2 years. Have to look very hard to see any blemish. What is a realistic price to ask for it in a weekly rag? -- No side tracking please as to the sense of the low use.
  • Nissan Primera SE+ Idling Faults 1 May 2006 (Forum)
Hi as a new member would be grateful for some advice from any techy's out there. My Primera 2 Litre Petrol (W reg on 68k miles) cuts out periodically, usually after braking at junctions - evident by loss of power steering. Car starts ok when key is turned. Also when stationary tick over approx 2000 but will drift down and then recover. thanks in anticipation

  • Ford Mondeo Clutch 28 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I can only find one pipe and that goes directly from the slave cylinder to the clutch housing so that must be the feed to the clutch. Also there is only one master cylinder so does this feed both the brakes and clutch. I am currently waiting for the delivery of a workshop manual, but in the meantime would value any help available. Thanks biggrin
  • Caliper Repair Kit - pug 306 9 Jan 2006 (Forum)
After submitting my recent topic of my poor breaking performance on my 1995 306 td (new brake pads, discs, shoes, drums, fluid) etc i was wondering if a caliper repair kit is worthwhile trying? i dont know too much about them and what is involved. How much does this cost approximatly and what is involved?
  • Another must-have accessory! 29 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The ad explained that these trims were suitable for fitting to steel or ALLOY wheels! One particlarly 'elegant' set of five-spoke trims even had fake ventilated brake discs behind the spokes! Anyone know where I can get a cheap Nova? (!!!) cheers, Sofa Spud
  • Forward planning 29 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Boring I know, but how many people think about these situations in advance - if we had not I think I would not be here as instinct is to brake.
  • 98 Mondeo air-con smell. 22 Jun 2005 (Forum)
My 1998 v6 Mondeo has developed a nasty smell when switched on (not all the time though). The nearest thing i can describe what it is like is a burning clutch or binding brakes. It's still getting as cold as it should be so it's working ok ,also i've had a good sniff under the bonnet and can't smell it there so haven't a clue what it could be? Any idea? TIA.
  • Spillage in car 16 Jun 2005 (Forum)
A litre and a half of red wine, all over the carpet underneath the front seats of my Passat. Someone coming the other way too fast on a country lane forced me to brake really hard and two bottles came off the back seat before smashing on the metal of the seat runners. Any suggestions for a thorough clean-up job and removing the smell? The carpet certainly doesn't look like it's ever designed to be removed, but I'll check Haynes all the same.
