Repairing cars in this recession. 5 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Obviously the newer computerised everything cars will be almost impossible to fix without the use and knowledge of very complex equipment, will we see a renewed demand for those superb easy to work on a well designed cars of 80's/90's, carina/corolla/primera/cavalier/405/loads more contenders. Are all those parts available any more, like most here i've been enjoying the more favourable economy and have run the types of vehicles i only dreamed of 25 years ago, so i'm out of touch, but i wonder if we might be going to find out soon. -
Overtakers, what reaction? 6 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I'm not doing quite the 40mph pedant, i'm in the words of my very competent HGV trainer 'maintaining normal progress', anyway i spy in the mirror a van overtaking me, he's left it a little late, so i ease the truck over close to the n/s verge to give him some room, no probs he's by without drama and flashes a thankyou..so far so good. But as is nearly always the case, the driver(s) coming the other way maintain there speed and trajectory, hugging the crown of the road, what this achieves i don't get, to be fair there wasn't the flashing headlamps and hand signs that sometimes accompany a late overtaker, but no attempt to give a little room either. -

Advice re:selling my BMW at auction 2 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I live quite close to a Manheim Auctions site (Gloucester) and although they are mainly lcv they do have a Saturday sale for cars (dealer p/ex,trade, & private). The online Glass?s valuation puts the car at £2780 average condition with 150k miles (it won?t value over this mileage) as a trade in to a dealer when buying another car. Ok ? finally! ? the questions: 1)- Does anyone have any idea what price I could expect to get in an auction ? -
C-Class: Diesel & Petrol 18 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The Kompressor engine had that nice low down grunt, from it seemed, about 800-1000rpm. Once moving, say fast A-road or NSL dual carraigeway, it was no contest, the CDI 's 'stomp' with 295ft/lbs @~2200rpm makes overtaking much safer & seemigly unaffected by passenger number or load. The Kompressor needed much more 'planning' in similar situations, to the extent that I was nearly 'caught out' once or twice initially Handling: Kompressor was much nicer (both shod with 16in 205/55's btw): without that heavy (old) 5-cylinder diesel lump, it was keener to turn-in (waited years to use that expression!) -
Oh so *that's* what the BMW badge means 15 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Just swapped a 1997 Jap import Honda Prelude Type-S for a 1996 BMW 528iSE and I have to say, I'm very impressed. (It was a free swap, no money changed hands.) Having never driven or even been in a decent, modern BMW before, I'd always wondered what the fuss was about, but now I've got one, it all makes sense. -
Changing Times 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Having travelled many times to the Czech Republic in the past six years, it struck me over our Christmas holiday trip how much the mix of metal has changed in that time, and with this, a shift of attitude towards car ownership. Originally, nearly every car in SWMBO\'s backwater home town was a beat up, ancient, rear engined Skoda, the odd Favorit or Lada, or one of the few Japs on the road. Average age? A lot. Now, in her town alone, there are any number of Threes and Fives, just about any VAG offering you care to name (including a W12 six litre A8 as well as the expected Fabias and Octavias), the odd Merc, more and more Hondas and Nissans, and a few Volvo XC70s. -
Top Gear team switch lanes 20 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I know users of this forum have been looking forward to its demise as there are countless threads on this topic in the archives, I know I have. It really doesn?t cut the mustard when compared to Channel 4's Driven series - this Thursday's offerings were particularly dire. This article from the BBC site will put everybody's mind at rest. I'm pleased to see that Quentin Willson will be back. What do you think? -
Toyota Prius not rubbish to drive shock! 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
There are 2 big surprises when you move off from rest the first time in a Prius. One is the unexpected shove in the back from the acceleration. The other is that it?s virtually silent. Or at least it is until you push the pedal too far and the petrol engine starts up. That?s not to say the engine is noisy, it just interrupts the eerie silence of pure electric power (especially in a multi-storey car park). -

Peugeot 206 hatchback - Automatic gearbox problem 3 Nov 2023 (Forum)
At the same time as the 'clunk', which can > really throw the passengers/driver forward sometimes, the gear lights on > the dash flash between the 's' and the '*' (frost) indicators. It mentions > it in my peugeot user guide provided by them but doesn't say why it happens or what > causes it. When I called they said the part wasn't made any more and it'd > therefore cost about £900 to fix. -
Charging location wot I visited 20 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Just had time to drink it and I'm up at 80% (from less than 20) so off I go. Lovely stop, an M&S, Costa a newsagent a chemist stand. Ahem facilities and comfy chairs. If this is the future I like it. It makes the premium leccy price acceptable , especially as it was spotless, tidy and clean. -

Vauxhall Insignia - Mileage discrepancy 29 Oct 2022 (Forum)
--StartFragment--> I have bought a used car in june 2022 from a local trader who advertised in auto traders and also in his website. The car was category s and has 117000 miles on meter. I checked the mileage on car spec and later on government mot check and both showing 117000 on mot which was done in 28 April 2022. Yesterday I went to a showroom to sell the car as my wife wants a small car. -
Vauxhall Zafira, CDTI Ecoflex - Zafira Diesel 2012, EGR fault codes 3 Jan 2022 (Forum)
The fault codes thrown up by the pedal test (I think it's called) are: 0400 ('EGR flow malfunction) 0409 ('EGR Sens A Circ') 0425 ('Catalyst Temp Sens Bank 1') 0100 ('Mass or Vol Air Flow Circ') I got these code interpretations off migweb.co.uk. I'm not a mechanic at all so I'd be pleased to have any explanation of what the problem/s is/are likely to be, how much it would cost to fix, and most importantly is this something a mobile mechanic could fix? Thanks in advance, Paul -
Ford Focus - Ford Focus squeak - video/sound 24 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Ford Focus mk3, strange squeaking noise when driving over 30mph. Whether cruising, accelerating or braking. See video here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/chkk9z02bmgq7e9/IMG-9551.MOV?dl=0 Very annoying on motorway or dual carriageways without radio on. At first thought this was the seat, have GT lubricated all the passenger seat side underneath no difference. -
Summer madness - convertible 26 May 2020 (Forum)
I’m just out of hospital after having a health scare with pneumonia, etc - no fun! Thankfully I am on the mend and feel truely fortunate. I’m in my late 50’s now and always promised myself a convertible as a second car. I’m must confess that I’m not a petrol head hence the ask - but looking for a 4 seater convertible - I’m planning on spending 10-12k. I doubt I’ll do more than 6k a year in it. -
Land Rover Freelander 2 2010 Diesel - Transfer box 7 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Land rover are not interested in any contribution, seems the component is from the Volvo bin of parts as it is made in Sweden. Have also just repaced n/s rear wheel bearing, something else that seems to be a common failure Had extended warranty which ran out last october, and fully dealer serviced until the last service as we dispared at the service we received.
