  • Honda Jazz Crosstar Advance - New member - new car 23 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Hi, I just joined this forum while in the process of buying a new car. We are a retired couple living near the Sussex coast and recently 'lost' our only car - a 20 year old Subaru Outback - when it failed MOT and the estimated cost of repair could not be justified. But as this coincided with a time of us being out of the country for a few months, we have SORNed the Subaru and left it in the car park of our apartment block until such time that we can get back to the UK, retrieve our belongings from the car, clear it and get a few pictures before sending it to the dismantler.
  • Ford Focus Active; CHR; Vitara; Civic - Advice on used vs approved car 16 Jun 2023 (Forum)
One silly question is that why those cars are not approved by Ford. If I buy used car and appoint an independent pre purchase inspector (RAC, AA, or ClickMechanic), how would this compared to buy an approved used car?
  • Any - Giveing the car a run 24 Sep 2019 (Forum)
For the  last couple of years its become the commute to work go to the tip car so hasn't had more than a 10 mile journey.  Today my wife and I took my BIL to university and needed two cars due to the amount of items going with him.  125 mile round trip loaded the cars up and off we went.
  • Peugeot 206 Y Reg 123K - Lazy Starter Motor? 4 Dec 2012 (Forum)
This only happens on cold mornings, mild mornings and other times of the year it is never an issue. I appreciate my car is fairly old, but lots of other cars older seem to never have an issue with this. My mechanic hasn't picked this up, as he predominately services/repairs my car in the summer months. Some help would be much appreciated.
  • Best sounds for Electric/Hybrid cars? 15 Nov 2011 (Forum)
I'd have it so as you creep along slowly and then the car shouts 'BOO!!' and frightens old dears to death, bring some comedy back to Britains roads. Thoughts?
  • Returning to UK with new baby. What car for £6K? 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
    2. gets good MPG - would be happy to consider diesel though always driven petrol until now 3. isn't too old or too high mileage 4. Isn't too big (we'll be sharing the car and my wife likes small cars!). On the bigger side of things, I've looked at Ford C-Max/Focus estate. On the smaller side of things, the Honda Jazz or Nissan Note.
  • Car choice dilema 17 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I am in the market for a big estate car in the £18-20k range, and am facing that classic dilema: Do I go for a nearly new mass-market car (Mondeo) or do I go for a 3-year old or so prestige car (E-class). I want a diesel auto and like my toys.
  • Driving examiners getting worse! 7 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I've just seen my dad who is a driving instructor and always has a tale to tell! 1 - Examiners now also 'examine' the car before going out. The new test centre my dad uses has a newly laid car park. Instructor with 4 day old Yaris parks up for someone to take an extended test (£90 BTW). Examiner walks round car and notices "bulge" in tyre and refuses to take test.
  • Insurance after having company car 3 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Can anyone let me know who she should be trying? She has had one claim about 3.5 years ago. As the removal of a lease car is a change to her contract she has negotiated a lump sum to replace her car - don't know how much. She has been offered her four year old Golf 1.9TDi with 60,000 on the clock for £7,000. The car has just had full service, new clutch, timing belt etc and she is in two minds whether to keep it or buy something brand new so she gets a three year warranty.
  • Mazda 323 v Ibiza/Civic/Corolla/Almera 16 May 2005 (Forum)
Now she's passed her test Mrs V's quest for her next car has begun. Fed up with the lack of power steering on her otherwise solid Felicia she's gone through some car buying magazines (and the CBCB) and come up with a small short list of cars as contenders.
  • Help with buying Car Please 11 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Thank God after going to hospital and getting some xrays she is okay and came home last night with bruising and a few scratches. She is sore this morning but considers herself very lucky. The car is a total write off. I have £3500 to get me a car soonish. It will be used for me the wife and a 3 year old. Is it possible to get a decent looking car that would suit famly use at this price? I am totally clueless about cars.
  • No Discount - Car Franchise Dealers 18 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Sold my old car and had £10000 to spend on new one. Went to local Honda and Toyota Agent who stated that they were not interested in giving any discount as they preferred customers who took out their financial packages.
  • Skoda Yeti SUV (2009 - ) - First 150 miles in my new 2 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I found the system in my Octavia II Ambiente much more intuitive, although obviously less functional. Still a massive improvement in what was fitted to my old Mk I Octavia vRS though. Overall quite impressed with the Yeti (so far)!
  • Underside rust 18 Feb 2023 (Forum)
I checked the underside of my 17 year old car and absolutely no rust on the underside. I keep it on the road overnight.  It looks like the car gods, don't want to me to buy a replacement car!. I did see a BMW (3 series - 2015), but put off by reliability and cost of maintenance.
  • Buy used car or lease 25 Jan 2014 (Forum)
I have just started a job where I get a car allowance and want to spend as little as possible. I don't have any savings, and my current car is worth about £1k. The car allowance requires that the car is less than 7 years old I would like to get a 5dr car probably diesel as I will be doing 15k to 20k miles per year, I like the idea of a VW golf, ford focus or mondeo If I buy a 2009 car it will be around £7k which I could take out a 3yr loan but cost of mot, tyres, brakes and any other wear and tear would probably add around 2k over 3 years?
  • Mazda CX-5 - Car breakdown very soon after service 7 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Full detail: I recently got my car serviced and the next day after driving away from the garage (c.15 miles of driving) my car began to experience difficulties starting up. After a couple of attempts I got it started again and was able to complete my journey, however from the next day onwards the car would not start at all.
  • N/A - 22 and busy 19 Sep 2022 (Forum)
His main criteria include - Loadspace Roof load space Sensible fuel economy Sensible insurance costs A reasonable level of reliability Capable of getting a bit muddy (but to be fair anything with the “right” tyres will cope) Not too tall, getting things on and off the roofs of tall cars is a pain. Comfortable enough for long journeys. £5k ish Then there’s another complication, he’s promised to teach his GF to drive. They can’t afford a second vehicle, so whatever he has will be the learner car.
  • Mazda MX5 /AudiTT - The old turning 50 car conundrum question 6 Oct 2018 (Forum)
Hi I have a friend who is reaching that age and wants to buy something sporty and special for himself whilst the family still have an SUV for kids/wife/shopping...
  • All - Mis-Diagnoses 8 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Expensive electronic components were replaced each time, none of which were returned to me, before the fault was isolated. The car on each occasion was left without limit of time as it was of no use to us with the fault present. No offer was made to revert back to the old good parts, or even find them - it was obvious there was no attempt made to keep them or test them off the vehicle.
  • Changing a Focus headlamp bulb... 10 Jul 2007 (Forum)
If this bulb blows again, as it undoubtedly will, I will have a bash myself - but I will try loosening or removing the battery because I think it may help a little and I will check the fixing mechanism with a mirror BEFORE removing the old bulb. When the old bulb came it, it was very blackened, which someone has previously suggested may be due to a poor earth. BTW, he said that the operation was more difficult on Diesel Foci due to the bigger battery ...... maybe a case for moving it out of the way.
