Nomination for the Best Car Driven Ever Award Original Elan, Chapman magic, did not have to steer, thought transfer did it, nice try Mazda with the MX5 but?? je ne sais quoi. • Which sat nav for under £100 would you recommend? 20 Nov 2019 (Ask HJ)
I'm looking to buy a sat nav as a Christmas present for my dad. What's the best model for under £100?
  • Where have all the good cars gone? 23 Aug 2019 (Forum)
You can imagine the standard, it looks like someone’s hit it with a rattle can and he’s not alone in this. I’ve recently viewed countless Fiesta’s, Mazda 2’s, Suzuki Swift’s and VW Polo’s with almost all having some very poor paint repairs that’ll soon become very tatty. The trade has changed markedly since I was selling new and nearly new stock. Most cars came back in good order and repairs were almost always up to insurance approved standards.
  • Help choosing suv, budget £16k or £300/month 16 May 2018 (Forum)
Used 3 series estate although they ride quite low.  Used CX-5 petrol although worried it will lack grunt, similar to the petrol crv. Mazda guy did say the 2.5 was coming to the UK though but haven't read anything else about that and I'm sure it wouldn't be quick enough anyway as his current contract car expires in the summer.   In general he is quite open minded, although being in his late 50's definitely would prefer something a little 'plusher'.
  • Can I make any money by paying my £20,000 PCP balloon payment and selling the BMW 4 Series onto a dealer? 21 Jan 2017 (Ask HJ)
I am approaching the end of a PCP agreement on a 2015 BMW 4 Series 2.0d xDrive M Sport (184PS). I think it's a desirable spec in white with black leather...
  • Which used estate would you buy-petrol or diesel? 26 Aug 2016 (Forum)
However, due to a change in job location, in 12 months my mileage will go up significantly to about 20k a year on A roads and motorway. I did have a Mazda 3 2007 1.6 Diesel and (I'm guessing here...) due to my driving habits, short commute etc, I experienced terrible and expensive DPF problems. The whole experience has REALLY put me off ever owning another diesel.
  • Another 'help me choose' thread 27 Feb 2016 (Forum)
OR  I could get a BMW 328i Touring, with a similar specification to the Skoda, for £32k-£35k after discount.  The third option was a Mazda 6 Sport, but having looked at the dimensions this seems too large for my needs, and too wide for my driveway.  I would prefer a manual, so understand I need to check the wonky offset pedal box of the BMW to make sure my size 11s fit.
  • Is the BMW F10 a sensible car for a daily commute? 2 Apr 2015 (Ask HJ)
I currently run a 2010 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 diesel. I would like something a bigger and more refined for a daily round trip commute of 45 miles. I am a...
  • Honda CR-Z - New car - very first impressions 30 Oct 2014 (Forum)
The battery assists sensibly and MPG is going to be really good, although it'll take me a while to build up my pattern there. The tank isn't huge but again that's a minor thing. Stereo is pretty good; no Mazda Bose effort but possibly that was a little wasted in a noisy MX-5 anyway! All in all, I believe I've made a great choice (VED is very low and insurance has dropped by £130) and although I'll miss my MX-5 a lot, the CR-Z ticks all the boxes for sportiness, boot space and MPG.
  • I need a small, economical fun car and can't decide between a MINI or a Suzuki Swift. 29 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
I have 10k max to spend on a car. I need it to be economical but nippy. It has to be roomy and safe, reliable and cheap to service as I commute 16,000...
  • Audi Q2 - first 1,000 miles 25 May 2018 (Forum)
But a good car and worth a look for anyone in the market for this sort of car (MPV / SUV / crossover - don't ask me the difference). Mazda CX-3 - felt good to drive but the 2-litre petrol is too sluggish at low revs.  You get to see why the competition all fit turbos. Skoda Karoq - they have tried too hard with the movable rear seats and the floor has a huge step up with the seats down.
  • Buying new SUV - Kodiaq, Edge or Tiguan? 21 Oct 2016 (Ask HJ)

  • More proof salesmen are idiots 29 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Well its a contender but actual interior space is not great for the cars size. Its big enough for us but the cheaper and better equipped Mazda CX5 is probably a bit bigger, shame I have no faith in the 2 litre non-turbo petrol being up to the job. The Nissan Quashqai is smaller and probably not quite big enough but the Nissan X-Tail is little more expensive and considerably bigger.
  • Which car to choose....... 12 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Options are: Nearly new Fiat Panda 100HP Pros: Same power as Fabia, tight handling, small to wash, cheap to buy, low insurance for what it is, similar size/lightness to Aygo, feels better built than Aygo, built in Bluetooth, climate control, 6 speed box, looks good, young image Cons: Inherent fear of Fiat reliability/rust/build quality, no heated seats, parking sensors or cruise control, harsh bouncy ride, miniscule fuel tank/poorer mpg, tax, poor NCAP rating, very small boot. Nearly new Mazda 2 1.5 Sport Pros: cheap to run, cruise control, good build, should be reliable, good handling reports (not been for test drive yet), looks a bit "younger" than the Bora, interior a bit more imaginative than Panda.
  • It's a rattling good car, anyway 14 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have a 6 week old Ford Lynx, a very neat little car locally assembled in the Philippines and exported across Asia-Pacific, based on a Mazda derived engine. My partner, the lissom Growlette, also has one, bought last year. Both cars are Honda Civic value but at local prices and Ford service here is excellent. Mine went in for its 1000km checkup.
  • Petrol, diesel, hybrid? (No EVs please) - Advice on car for retirement 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Bit suspicious of Volvo since the Chinese takeover but I'm probably looking anyway at something that predates that. Open to Japanese or Korean though. I have a Mazda MX5, kept garaged, for sunny days though it only gets about 1000 miles a year, and I have thought of replacing both with a single car. But there are precious few open large cars and I'd probably want a tin top rather than a ragtop.
