Golf Mk3 1.8 Misfire under load 20 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi Board, Hopefully an expert here can help me, my 96 Golf 1.8 is driving me insane (and emptying my wallet!) Here's the story. Over the winter the car has had problems starting in the morning. The battery is strong, but it sometimes took up to 3 or 4 minutes of cranking to get it to splutter into life. Once started, it was always fine for the rest of the day. Possibly related, on two occasions (once after unavoidably driving through a big puddle, the second time when driving while it was raining horizontally) the engine cut out and took another few minutes of cranking to fire up again. -
VW Starting Problems 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Damp: If it has been standing overnight and it has been raining and they go to start it, it is extremely reluctant to fire up ? engine turns over and sounds as if the battery is flat (even though they have their foot on the clutch whilst it?s turning and have pumped the accelerator to the floor once to activate the automatic choke) and are not touching the accelerator during turning the engine over. -
Rover 414i Rusting/Split Spark Plugs. 22 Dec 2002 (Forum)
[1] 1 & 3. No 4 is Helicolied and will remain untouched for ever. ;-) [2] Beyond the Aluminium/Iron rust battery interface there must be some something else. 6 months for plugs to rust in solid is crazy. [4] [3] Ok Q3 isn't academic. I'd love a look at em! [4] I haven't previously ised copperslip, but will from now on, of course. -- Parp, Parp! -
Primera Starting problem 5 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I checked that all plugs had a spark, although I used No.1 HT lead to test them all, so unsure if the other HT leads are ok. I then connected jump leads up incase the battery had a dry cell, still no luck. I could also smell petrol, i.e, I assume it's getting through to the cylinder (and the Cat!!!) One other thing that I looked at was the condition of the bore where the plugs fit, there was a creamy/brown dust/powder in the plug bore of cylinder No.1 (not in the cylinder, but above where the plug screws in). -
More headlamp-related problems 27 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Another possibly relevant fact is that on both headlamo connectors, the plastic has melted slightly round the earth lead. I have tried taking a direct earth feed from the headlight to the battery negative - no difference. The poor old girl is worth peanuts, so I don't really want to spend a fortune at the main dealer getting this sorted (if indeed there is a problem). Anyone out there any ideas??? -
Toyota Prius plug in 2017 - Very quick review 7 Feb 2018 (Forum)
For a five seater and potentially a family car, the biggest let down was the boot. Those batteries have to go somewhere and they are between the rear wheels. As a result there is only about 8 inches depth from boot floor to luggage cover – the steeply raked boot door also robs space. -
G-Wiz no parking or congestion charges 10 Nov 2006 (Forum)
It will soon offer modified versions of the Toyota Prius hybrid reportedly capable of up to 130mpg thanks to lithium-ion battery power. -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say. -
Mazda 2 - Honda Jazz - Toyota Auris - Help Finding The Most Reliable Car 16 Jan 2025 (Forum)
Ideal for upto two kids in the future. Because I don't drive often, I'm ruling out out hybrids as I'm worried I'll damage the battery by not driving it. It has to be reliable, especially the gearbox (TC or CVT). I want a car I can keep for as long as I can, that'll never sell. Diesels are out of the question. Here's what I've narrowed it down to: (Engine sizes are a must due to cheaper road tax.) -
Zafira 1.9CDTI SRi - cutting out while driving! HELP 14 Sep 2021 (Forum)
It does this hot and cold and on motorways or driving 30mph and also when in idle just ticking over it just stalls by itself. Ive noticed sometimes when its playing up the trip screen says ' battery remote control' No fault codes have been found as yet but once it did flash up CIM module? Will i need an auto electrician and does anybody think it might be the ECU? I have had a few things done to the car to test to see if it would fix it, Fuel filter changed - was realllllllly dirty!! -
servicing by numbers-which is best? 3 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Starts first time every time and does not blow any smoke except when accelerating hard. It has original exhaust, clutch, battery etc and all in all is a very good car still. On top of that I still manage to average nearly 50mpg. I also claimed over £65K in mileage money and spent about £37K keeping the car. Call me a silly billy but I think my situation tells a different story about extended service regimes. -
Peugeot 308 - Peugeot 308, 2010 Petrol 1.6l Noisy fan 24 Sep 2018 (Forum)
Then took it back to the garage who checked on the fuse box with a tester and it started to glow.....not sure whatever it means. Also, the mechanic disconnected the connection between battery and fan and fan did not stop, mechanic thinks it should stop if it were a temp sensor error. Mechanic now says may be a corrupt ECU or fuse board or something. bit of background.Initially after the car was bought few months ago it was working fine with no fan issue. -
Salesmen - Why do they exist 7 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Requirements are pretty simple: turbo petrol with at least 125ps and 150 torques space for a folded wheelchair in the boot and a low lip to make loading it easy good internal space with a compact footprint no rubber band tyres and sports suspension Essential kit (or options) is: Dark rear glass spare wheel or at least an option to add cruise control aircon but preferably climate sat nav but android auto facility will do fine, it works in mine After a good deal of internet searching the Citroen C£ Aircross appeared to meet all the above so on a wet Friday afternoon went for a look at the Feel spec The petrol 130 has enough power and torque The car in the showroom had the battery disconected thus could not look in the boot. Went to look at one outside in the rain and it was fine Plenty of space and compact. Decent trim quality and everything felt solid 195 60 16 tyres All good so far. -

BMW E39 535i - glitches 24 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Was originally father-in-law's car and so 1 owner since new, 100K miles only. Had been stored for 2 years but 2 months ago I replaced the battery, got an oil change/engine flush, brakes serviced and put her through the MOT. Total cost approx £500 inc parts. As I've spent this on her and the lighter evenings are coming (here's hoping!!) -
Toyota - Estima 1996, 2.2 3CT-E engine. Diesel fault. 29 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Symptoms: Engine won't start at all. Filter Ok, no water, primer button pumps and goes hard when full. Battery OK, everthing else electrical works, engine turns OK. Diesel in pump, but not at injectors. Diesel at solenoid cut-out valve (and the filter under it is clean). Easy Start in air-intake makes engine fire - but won't carry on without the Easy Start. -
Ford Modeo 2003 - Intermittent dashboard fault 28 Sep 2013 (Forum)
I bought my car in May 2004 and up until the last year it has needed nothing more than tyres, spark plugs, a battery etc. The usual stuff. It has 130,000 on the clock. Since January the car has been in and out of the garage with a variety of issues. I've worked out that I've spent almost £1,500 on it this year alone (this included a new clutch and alternator). -
Ford Focus 1.0 Ecoboost 125bhp - Focus 1.0 Ecoboost Problems 31 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Heater now working, but I still lose USB connection intermittently a couple of times a month (music stop playing, I have to turn it off for a while, then switch it back on) July 18th my car engine wont turn over, I called out RAC, when they arrived they checked battery and starter motor, all ok. There was no water in my expansion bottle and told me my engine was jammed with water, they towed it off to main dealer. It took them 2 weeks just to look at my car, they told me they could find any fault and were sending if off to an engine specialist, after a couple of days they told me Ford had authorised a new engine. -

ford fiesta 1.25 zetec T reg - over revs but not stalling or power loss 2 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Ive tried an ECU reset about five times now and still the same (i cant find appropriate fuse so just been disconnecting the battery) so i disconnected the VSS (triangle plug thing that sits in the gearbox) that works a treat except my speedo is electronic, so no vss no speedo. so what i was wondering was do any of you know which wire controls the speedo? -
Ford Focus Zetec Climate '05 55 - Trade In Problem Before Picking Up New Car 8 Dec 2011 (Forum)
There is no difference in the way it drives or performs so I hope its nothing major. Its also not long had a new alternator and battery (about 2k miles ago) so I know it cant be that. I did tell the dealer that the car had had some problems earlier in its life (core plugs, leaky windscreen washers onto the HT leads) when I first bought it, and showed all receipts since. He checked it visually and started the car before we did the deal (no engine light came on, as it hasnt done since the alternator change), asked about servicing and I showed him the book.
