  • how to test a coil chrysler 1937 15 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Any ideas, or could it have simply have been a component failure or chaffed wire to earth? Obvioulsy had a huge amount of current flowing through it. The car was out on a run when this happened. I don't know wether it occurred during the run, or on start up. Damn odd points in it. Single sided with the other contact attached to the base plate itself with like a crude vernier adjust.
  • ? change diesel injectors (Fiat) 4 Oct 2005 (Forum)
My initial reaction has been to add some injection cleaner to a new tank of fuel. For the past few days it has been running fine, but this morning the problem returned. I believe it may not be firing on one or more of the 5 cylinders for a brief time due to fuel starvation. The diesel filter was change only 6 weeks ago when the car was serviced and the glow plugs were changed last year.
  • Nissan Navara - Rust? 28 Sep 2005 (Forum)
When I showed the locking wheel nuts - I got "they all do that" and when I showed the side step / running board, they could not provide an explanation but took a picture to send to Nissan UK. They did try to fob me off by telling me that it was an optional extra anyway (quite untrue - it was standard fit for the Navara but an optional extra for the basic pickup).
  • Another VW Passat misfire 20 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I own a 1997 Mk5 Passat 1.8 20V. It started to misfire last weekend running intermittently on anything from 2, 3 or all 4 cylinders. I have since changed the plugs, and the coil pack and this has not made a difference. Also, I have ran a compression test without receiving an adverse result.
  • Peugeot 406 stalling during warmup 20 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Here?s a puzzling one. The engine on my Peugeot 406 2.0 (1998/S) petrol runs fine when cold, and when very hot, but during the warm up period there is a nasty period when it stalls, falters when driving off, flat spots and is generally unhappy. During this period, the orange ?
  • Ford Fiesta MK4 12 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Reading other forum posts on this subject has helped me trace the fault to a broken cable / wire underneath the front passenger seat. This controls the seat belt pre - tensioners and is a yellow cable / wire that runs from a plug on the innermost seat rail to another plug that is under a piece of trim near the door sill. It's snapped away from its plug at the door end and the plug has been removed by the previous owner so all i have is two bare wires.
  • HT Leads (expiring?) Polo 6 May 2005 (Forum)
I don't think its running rich , so to speak, as the tailpipe is as clean as a whistle. A while ago, when I had trouble with the distributor, it was suggest to me (by Peter D I do believe) that the HT leads on these Polo?
  • Megane v Mondeo (really!) 5 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I need something cheaper to run than my current 5-series, without giving up too many creature comforts, looking to spend not too much over £10k (11 at a push). I've been looking at the options among 1-2 year old diesels and my shopping list's shrunk down to 2 (an odd couple you might think): a Megane hatch 120 DCi Privilege or a Mondeo TDCi Ghia (or maybe Zetec) 115 or 130PS.
  • Pre-Registered v. Nearly New 14 Sep 2004 (Forum)
This appears to be a couple of grand less than the price of 'nearly new' diesel, but over a few years, the costs of ownership would probably be similar. Having read about the importance of 'running in' a new car, I am concerned that a nearly new one might have been thrashed, or could be a 'lemon' that the first owner has sold on as quickly as they could. I'd prefer a diesel, but this concern is putting me off a little.
  • Alfa 156 blown spark plug 3 Aug 2004 (Forum)
My alfa 156 suddenly developed a really bad misfire like it was running on 2 cylinders, on opening the bonnet there was a horendous knocking coming from the top of the engine, I removed the engine cover to find it had blown one of the small sark plugs out of the head stripping the thread on the bottom 4 pitches of the plug.
  • Expected Battery Life 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I know that usage patterns affect a battery, but in my case, the car rarely sits in the garage for more than three days before a decent shopping trip run of between 20 to 35 kilometers each way is done. There are other journeys of course but the pattern is not that of a two or three kilometer run a couple of times a week. I used Skoda Assist when the car would not start and the driver of the breakdown truck used a power boost to start the engine.
  • Audi A4 Coolant Loss 23 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Instead of the temperature gauge sticking like glue to 90degrees it now goes up when I accelerate hard but then after a while returns to 90. The radiator is hot across the top and this morning after a 60 mile run was warm in other places too. With the engine hot and running I have tried to hold shut the top line to the radiator after the T to the expansion tank in the hope of seeing water puped into tank to confirm water pump is working but to no avail.
  • Fuels: detergent or non-detergent 13 Apr 2004 (Forum)
There may also be issues with oil leakage which can results in further deposits on combustion. Engines run on stop start cycles will be much more prone to deposit build up than those run continuously over long periods of time (probable explanation for the test bed comment). Most major motor manufacturers now recommend detergent fuels.
  • Car-by-Car Breakdown 21 May 2003 (Forum)
'Re J Clarkson not every one can affort to waste 40 - 60k on a car , unless it can be written off for tax. The avarage punter needs a good cheap to run reliable car for A to B running. And ALL manufactures build lemons at one time or another, if you took HJ car reviews to heart you would not buy any car. What would be useful would be HJ total car type sales per month vis compliants/known faults as a percentage.
  • Renault Laguna 1 1.9dTi Cambelt 11 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone have experience of changing the cambelt on a 1.9dti I have just replaced mine, complete with new idler pulleys, couple of odd things, first checked out timing marks, i.e. crank tdc, pegged crank with timing pin in cyl. block, fuel injector pump, ok. but noted camshaft alighment to pointer on camcover appeared 1 notch out. Although engine running fine. I've fitted new belt and left marks as i found them, and all still seems fine, plenty of power, no smoke, or starting problems just seemed strange. Anyone else done this work?? I'm still a little concerned over the correct tension of belt, I've set it able to twist belt on longest run by approx. 45 degree, same as noted before removing the old belt.
  • petrol tank air lock 15 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I've never had this problem before and it's damned annoying! My only other solution of course is to persuade my husband to do the petrol run. Cheers Carole

  • Car smash - urgent advice req'd 7 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I need some urgent practical advice following someone running into my car while it was parked outside my house. I’m in the process of selling this car having transferred my insurance to a newer vehicle. Fortunately, I have the full name and address and insurance details of the person who crashed into my old car.
  • Buying 4x4 for export to Sri Lanka 22 Apr 2002 (Forum)
A friend of mine is working in the United Kingdom for two years on a fixed length contract - 20 months remaining - at which point he will return home to Sri Lanka. His intended plan is to buy a secondhand 4x4, run it for the duration of his UK contract, and then ship it back to Sri Lanka, for use as the family vehicle. His monthly budget to buy and run the vehicle whilst in the UK is £500, and obviously, at the point of leaving the UK, any finance should have been paid off.
  • Vintage Merc or a Skoda Octavia ? 27 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Since I live in the middle of town, I presently run a small Suzuki Alto (used by SWMBO on kindergarten run - difficult to find amongst SUV's) and a Honda Civic. The Honda is 4 years approaching 40 k miles and used for commuting, it is great for parking and town use but nothing is wrong it except that there is not much space for long journeys with a 3 year old daughter or visiting in laws.
