  • Vauxhall Astra Diesel Pump Problem 4 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The fuel pump has just gone on my Vx Astra 2.0 DTI (Y20DTH) - 2001. Cost of replacement is £1300 for a reconditioned unit, the main dealer price for a brand new unit was twice this ! On speaking to a local injection specialist they tell me they see TEN of these a week and at any time keep TWENTY of these pumps in stock !!!!!
  • mixing diesel and petrol?? 21 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Helo,..my home mechanic mate had a diesel come in which had petrol put in by accident. Not being one to waste fuel -He pumped the petrol out and mixed it with diesel ending up with 70% diesel and 30% petrol. He put it in his 730 petrol bmw and it runs sweeter than it did on petrol so i was wondering what could be a downside to doing this long term?..
  • Ford Endura-DE Turbo Diesel Misfire 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
It may last for say five miles and then as normal for a while anly to return. I have looked for air leaks, replaced fuel filter and pipe from the filter to pump, but still no cure. Any suggestions please? Many thanks.
  • vtec and economical driving 8 Dec 2005 (Forum)
IIRC, i read somewhere (possibly HJ's column?) that to get the best fuel economy from a vtec engine, it is better to keep the revs higher than normal. Is this correct, and why? My honda 2 litre vtec accord tourer does about 28 mpg around town and about 34 on longer journeys.
  • What car to buy for 5.5K ? 26 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I'd be very grateful for some advice about what car to buy with a budget of £5500. I'm driving approx 20,000 motorway miles per year, so fuel economy and safety are my main requirements. Any suggestions for what to buy ? Am very tempted by the Smart Fortwo, but don't know whether it would be much fun on the motorway ????. Also like the Renault Clio dci, but realise I maybe missing some other good alternatives Cheers for any advice
  • MK4 Golf Running rich/hig emissions 19 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The car was running rich and failed MOT with high enissions. It is vibrating on idle and gives of an extremely pungent fuel smell on idle. My mechanic replaced the lambda probe, cat converter, cleaned out throttle body and replaced engine manifold to no avail (and £900 later). Now he reckons its the ECU. Could this be the problem?
  • Mondeo TDCi - stupid question 13 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I seem to remember being told when I started driving that you should never let a diesel run out of fuel - and that it would need a mechanic to bleed it (air?) to restart. Was this true and is this still the case on modern cars such as the Mondy. I might be running the tank a bit lower than usual if the panic buying goes on all week - but don't fancy an AA call.
  • diesel filter how to change? - Corolla 11 Sep 2005 (Forum)
hello everyone just wondering if anyone would know how to change fuel filter for a toyota corolla 2ltr diesel m reg (2c type engine)I've had a look underneath and I think it might need a special tool to undo the bottom connection maybe not though ???I haven't a clue basically!
  • mk3 mondeo 1.8 duratec 5 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Hi my dad's 51 plate mondeo sems to lack power. It has recently been fixed for a faulty fuel pump (which causes the car to cut out at motorway crusing speed!!). It has done 116 000 miles and has been serviced regually though it still feals flat when you accelerate hard ( like the hand brake is on??)
  • Petrol or diesel? 28 Aug 2005 (Forum)
One thing that makes me choose petrol is the little-publicised deleterious effect on heater performance of the slower rate of warm-up of the diesel engine coolant, particularly at idle. (Caused, of course, by the greater fuel efficiency of the diesel engine ~ there, I've admitted it !) Parking outside overnight in frosty weather usually sorts the petrol men from the diesel boys. -- L'escargot by name, but not by nature.
  • No car lanes 29 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I might add at this stage that in our wonderful, new labour, anti-car city, the buses, which are massive smoke-belching planet destroyers are consistently empty, whilst our highly fuel-efficient city cars probably cleanse the air that passes briefly through their high tech engines as they slip silently through the city.
  • mercedes endurance record 26 Jul 2005 (Forum)
By my maths that's 3333.33r miles per day, or an average of 138 miles per hour. Considering time for new drivers and fuel it must have been going faster. Would they have bothered changing the oil? Wonder if, when and which make will be the first to do 1 million non-stop.
  • VAG 1.9Tdi or 2.0Tdi? 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I recently heard the 2.0 described as unrefined, surprising considering it is new. Is the 2 litre worth the £1000 premium it demands on the A3? Fuel consumption appears to be similar, does anyone have any experience of these engines? Thanks.
  • Megane digital display 10 May 2005 (Forum)
Does anyone know if it is possible to convert my 2004 Megane digital display to read metric rather than imperial? I would rather see the fuel econpmy as Kilometres per litre rather than MPG etc. But I would like to be able to switch it back for the future when I sell the car. I wouldn't have thought Renault would fit a different computer for the UK market, I am certain it must be possible by a few strokes of a laptop.
  • bmw mpg 9 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Looking through bmw website. they are quoting for a 330ci se between Extra-urban (mpg) 40.9 (40.4) Combined (mpg) 31.0 (29.4) figures in brackets are for an auto and a 320ci se Extra-urban (mpg) 40.9 (38.7) Combined (mpg) 31.7 (30.1) so between a 2.2 and a 3 litre, there is only 1 mpg in it? so if i had a 330ci se auto i would have the same fuel consumption as a 2.2 manual? surely this isnt right? any idea's people?
  • 'CAFE' in the UK 30 Dec 2004 (Forum)
In the write-up on the 2005 MY Honda Jazz, HJ mentions that Honda are not importing the more powerful version of the Jazz because they are using the Jazz model to maintain their CAFE rating. I had never heard of CAFE but a quick search on the Web revealed it stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy ( http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/cafe/overview.htm ) but the only references I can find seem to indicate that this is target used for the American market. Is CAFE a target used in the UK?
  • Diesel Smoke (any car) 21 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I notice (especially with the dark nights) a fair amount of white diesel smoke/haze on pulling away and when pulling from low revs. How much smoke should I expect from a diesel? I assume that black smoke is a fueling problem etc but I'm not sure about any other colours! The car is an 02 Focus TDDI.
  • peugeot 306 turbodiesel 12 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Does this mean it has an immobiliser fitted, and if so, how do i reset the thing. It seems to be getting fuel up to the pump but no further, and is turning over on the key. Any help greatly appreciated. Ta
  • Astra running very rough 27 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi All I have been experiencing problems with my Astra for 2 months (on and off) I had noticed that the revs were dropping when I pressed on the accelerator and would stall if I lifted off to quickly! It has been in for a 60k service and all filters changed, I thought the fuel filter might have been clogged up, but the problem still exists May be just coincidence but I have noticed an airlock in the coolant since the problem started.
  • Kangarooing Fiat Bravo 2 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Car: Fiat Bravo 1.4 sx 1998 I have just had my starter motor changed on my Fiat, which has been going great for a few years. Now, two days after, the car has started to kangaroo along the road. I have noticed my fuel consumption getting lower over the last few months about 7 miles to the £. Any ideas on what's wrong? and could it be related to the starter motor change or is that a coincidence?
