  • Diesel Smoke (any car) 21 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I notice (especially with the dark nights) a fair amount of white diesel smoke/haze on pulling away and when pulling from low revs. How much smoke should I expect from a diesel? I assume that black smoke is a fueling problem etc but I'm not sure about any other colours! The car is an 02 Focus TDDI.
  • peugeot 306 turbodiesel 12 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Does this mean it has an immobiliser fitted, and if so, how do i reset the thing. It seems to be getting fuel up to the pump but no further, and is turning over on the key. Any help greatly appreciated. Ta
  • Astra running very rough 27 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi All I have been experiencing problems with my Astra for 2 months (on and off) I had noticed that the revs were dropping when I pressed on the accelerator and would stall if I lifted off to quickly! It has been in for a 60k service and all filters changed, I thought the fuel filter might have been clogged up, but the problem still exists May be just coincidence but I have noticed an airlock in the coolant since the problem started.
  • Kangarooing Fiat Bravo 2 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Car: Fiat Bravo 1.4 sx 1998 I have just had my starter motor changed on my Fiat, which has been going great for a few years. Now, two days after, the car has started to kangaroo along the road. I have noticed my fuel consumption getting lower over the last few months about 7 miles to the £. Any ideas on what's wrong? and could it be related to the starter motor change or is that a coincidence?

Would very much appreciate the experience of other Backroomers - do's or don'ts or other advice. I gather fuel is cheaper in this part of the Euro world, as on the Continent of Europe. Oz (as was)

  • Petrol injection - how does it work? 2 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I had assumed that the reason for one injector per cylinder was so that each was timed precisely for the correct point on that cylinder\'s cycle. I thought the whole point about fuel injection was that it replaced the inevitable hit and miss suck and dribble from a carburettor with a precisely timed and measured squirt to each cylinder. Anybody care to comment on this?
  • lucas pump, 306 td 17 Apr 2004 (Forum)
there is a cable comes from the thermo housing to the fuel pump that operates a lever with a grounding point on it. When the engine is cold, should this lever be pulled to connect the circuit? Ie with engine off and cold should I have it so it has connected the circuit then when thermo opens at normal operating temp it will release tension on the cable and shut of the cold start advance gizmo inside the pump?
  • Diesel shelf life 23 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My father has stockpiled about 40 litres of diesel (he was expecting another fuel demo/shortage). This stuff has been in his garage for over a year now, so I told him that it would be advisable to get it used because it would 'go off'. He didn't believe me and asked one of his mates (not an engineer but a farmer) who told him he didn't think diesel deteriorated.
  • Polo spluttering 27 Feb 2004 (Forum)

  • Which 4X4 for 15K? 19 Nov 2003 (Forum)
After a string of company 4x4's (Discovery's, Landcruiser's and M-Class), my Dad has decided to opt out of the company car scheme due to escalating taxation costs. He is looking to spend around 15K and will cover around 20K miles per year. All fuel will be paid for by the company. He is currently considering a Landcruiser or a Range Rover and is also looking into Japanese Imports Any advice on the above or any others which we may have missed?

  • Saving Money. Or Not Saving Money? 4 Oct 2003 (Forum)
An acquaintance has traded in their N plate Escort 1.6 with 70,000 miles on thc clock and bought a new base model Ka, 53 plater. Reason being that the "Escort was using too much fuel". Annual mileage was under 10,000 miles I would say. Surely, the cost to change would far outweigh the saving in petrol costs over many years to come - even allowing for the most generous discounts and trade-in allowances?
  • White (or any other colour) van man 16 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Why do most van drivers insist on accelerating to the rev limiter before changing gear? Not only is it excessively noisy to do so and bad for fuel economy, it also slows the rate of acceleration as diesel engines benefit from earlier up shifts. Also why are they all in their early thirties, stocky build and read The Sun? ;-) PS: I am not knocking Sun readers, that is what I read most days!
  • Subaru Legacy - Owner Experience 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Do any of the BR community own one, or know of one, and if so what has their experience been. I'm mainly interested in fuel economy, handling, reliability and any horror story catastrophic failures of major components. Thanks in advance Charles
  • Timing advance kits... 29 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Do these "mods" really provide significant[1] power advantages? Can you expect any premature engine wear/damage? They claim no change in your fuel consumption - but I find this hard to believe. TIA Moby. [1] "significant" is a claimed 5-20bhp
  • 405 TD glowplug replacement? 24 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi, My 405 is becoming increasing difficult to start and so I guess I need to replace the glowplugs. I'm really sure it's the plugs not a fueling problem. I will be using Berus. However after a quick look under the hood I thought it would be a good idea to ask for any advice on removing/replacing the far left glowplug buried behind the injection pump.

I've seen some dubious claims for fuel economy devices before, and I've seen some cheap & nasty web sites - now get 2 in 1 http://www.spiralmax.com/ If you really want a laugh, click on the 'photos and installation information' button. you'll never curse at a haynes manual again.
  • smoking mondeo 15 Apr 2003 (Forum)
can anyone help, when i start my 1995 1.8 td it smokes like a kipper at idle, its ok when its warm and it does not smoke when its being driven (or revved up a bit). i have done some basics of changing the air/oil/fuel filters, changing the oil its self, had the idle speeds checked but it does still smoke. it starts pretty well and you dont need to throttle it to get it going any suggestions? cheers dave
  • ECU Chipping benefits 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Anyone considered getting their car's ECU re-mapped by places such as 'super chips' to give better performance/fuel economy etc? Are the benefits really as good as the companies would have us believe? For my 2.4 Audi I can expect a boost of 12bhp for approx £300 - quite keen but any feedback from people who have had this done would be much appreciated.
