  • Corsa Handbrake 14 Apr 2004 (Forum)
the car is 6 months old + has done 3000 miles. i told her not to have it done. but she is unable to park the car on a hill. (i have told her to park on flat carparks, till i get time to look at it.) i guess there is an adjustment on the rear of handbrake itself?
  • dumped car? 12 Feb 2004 (Forum)
For our block, we have one parking space (although all flats have garages en bloc round the back), running lengthways beside the path up to the main door. The space is big enough for two small cars, if parked well, but usually accommodates just one. I came home last week, and a car I didn't recognise was parked in the space, backed right to the end (so that another car could squeeze in). It may belong to a new resident, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't.
  • Hand car washes 8 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Not sure if this has been discussed on here before - I can't find anything on the search, but what is the general opinion of these hand carwashes that seem to be appearing, certainly around here, a lot recently? I've used one in Ashton before in my old Tipo that I wasn't too bothered about, and the results seemed OK, but I've read a few things about other car washes that makes me slightly reluctant to trust the Yaris to one. This one uses some pretty big pressure washers to cover the car in some 'snowfoam' which is then rubbed over with a cloth and blasted off with another washer.
  • Scratched MGF paintwork. 8 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Catherine has a year old MGF Steptronic in Tahiti (dark) Blue. It is a well loved second car and when not in it's garage has covered only 3500 careful miles in west Scotland. Nearly every panel has fine, visible scratches in the laquer layer yet the car is rarely left unattended in a car park and is not subject to unusual attacks by road grit and scratchy hedges.
  • Ford Focus Zetec - ECU failure not covered by warranty 21 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Stewart checked the wiring to the fuel injectors, which was fine and so he suggested having the ECU tested and if necessary replaced. This was done at a cost of £760.20.  My son finally sold the car at the end of February for £5,600. It was less than four years old, and with less than 32,000 miles on the clock! I am appalled that Ford mis-informed me about the warranty situation, and that we have had to finance over £3,700 worth of repairs to a vehicle that is less than 4 years old and has less than 32,000 miles on the clock.

  • private buyer long term diesel / lpg choice ? 24 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi all New to the site but have been a guest viewer for quite some time and now need some honest advice. Quick relevant background: Never bought a new car. Living in ITALY, petrol 1.2 euro/ltr, diesel 1.1euro/ltr, lpg 0.54/Ltr and availability no problem. 1 one year old daughter, hopefully another within the year. Space and safety therefore important, especially with some of the driving around here. wife has company car and so this new one will be second car for now, but who knows if company car will remain and for how long.
  • Toyota Yaris - 17yo first automatic car, MK1 Yaris too old? 3 Jun 2022 (Forum)
However, that brings me onto my second main question, I was wondering if it is worth buying an older automatic like this, as I understand they're already, or will be soon 20 years old, my budget can't really stretch further than £3000 (maybe a couple hundred over if there's a really good and newer car) I've also been looking at aygos and was intrigued by their multimode gearboxes, however it's up for debate if people like these or not, personally they seem really cool, I like the control you have over the car, which seems more so than in a traditional automatic.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI - What are my rights after buying a car privately? 15 Oct 2013 (Forum)
We all walked outside to the car where he then showed me the service book in the glove box and the interior was in great condition too. Before I had the chance to even pop the bonnet and check it over the old boy had to get back to his flat and do what ever old boys do and said "it's ok you can drive the car because your insured as I am fully comp on it" I started the engine after he went in and it appeared to sound fine, a little smoke but what I expected from a diesel (so I've been told) Drive slowly home about two miles away as it didn't have much fuel and parked it up over night.
  • Toyota X - Scared to buy a car 3 Sep 2024 (Forum)
My budget is max £13k which I have saved for these past 17 years. Any advice please/or car make suggestions? ??.   I just want a good reliable car of course, as I've had to pay £500 on my current one for one thing or another and I don't think it's right to keep paying so much on an old jalopy!
  • Mondeo Mark 1 Ghia X 6 Cyl. 2.5 l. - Restoring a car - stolen on 22 March 2024 16 Apr 2024 (Forum)
The dilemma is that the insurance company is notified that they will pay out, the car then becomes their property, however, I want to have the car back if found and continue restoration of this 28 year old car, I have carried out many repairs and renewals to shock absorbers, brakes etc. etc..
  • Suggestions for a car 18 Oct 2022 (Forum)
My car got nicked so we're in the market for a new car but the choices are making it very difficult for me to choose. We're looking at buying cash and have a maximum of 15k to spend and would ideally like a car with less than 40k miles on.
  • Peugeot 206 1.4 SW 2006 - Knocking noise from rear of car 25 May 2018 (Forum)
Hello,    My Mother has a peugeot 206 SW 2006, the car has done 84,000 miles and she has had it from two years old. The car has been looked after by the local peugeot dealer, until recently when they started to show less interest in looking after it. So it had its mot and service elsewhere and has needed nothing since.
  • Dealer hasn't settled finance on PX 9 May 2014 (Forum)
My problem is that the dealer has not yet settled the outstanding finance on my old car as part of the transaction. I realise I am still technically liable for the payments and I have not cancelled the Direct Debit as I don't want to affect my credit rating. I have spoken to the dealer several times since buying the car and he keeps promising to pay off the finance, but so far he hasn't.
  • Quantifying the value of a warranty on a used car. 30 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Specifically it appears that warranties can be summarized as covering anything which can be classed as a "manufacturors defect", whereas pretty much anything that is likely to go wrong would class as "wear and tear" or "driver error", and thus not be covered by the warranty. Since I'm in the market for a 1-4 year old car, I'm wondering whether warranty is something I should even be adding in to the equation, and if so what presedence should I be giving it? example: Given 2 equivalent cars in every way of the same make model and variant, a 10 plate for 11k with no warranty, and the same car in a 11 plate for £13k with 2 years warranty left - is that warranty worth the extra £2-3k.
  • Car battery questions 31 Oct 2008 (Forum)
It was restarted and has started each time since, but I gather that it is fairly common for cars left in airport long stay car parks to have flat batteries. The vehicle is over 6 years old now.) 2. What is the best kind of battery to get? I ask because the CBCB says "Beware of cheap 'Tudor' batteries which can blow acid out of the vent, damaging paint and underbonnet components.
  • Chrysler Voyager (2001 - 2004) - How do you know.... 29 Oct 2008 (Forum)
£18k for a 6 year old car is a lot of money!!! Any thoughts welcomed.
  • A car supermarket 11 Aug 2008 (Forum)
This is the strange bit. They would not give a trade in for her old car or a price to change. Instead the salesman produced a form headed "Customer Proposal". It had the windscreen price of the new car and he asked her to fill in "what you think your car is worth" , sign the form agreeing a deal and pay a deposit.
  • 4x4 the safest by far? 17 Oct 2006 (Forum)
The cars with the worst records for driver deaths and serious injuries are the old-style Mini, the Fiat Panda, pre-1993 Nissan Micra, Daewoo Matiz and Suzuki Swift. The DoT looked at police reports of more than 138,000 crashes from 2000 to 2004.
  • Downmarket Car Auctions 5 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I follow HJ's auction reports with interest and the low prices for almost new cars are a revelation. Well, as daughter wants a new car, I took the plunge and visited a car auction a long way from Blackbushe. I was hoping to get a smallish Nissan/Toyota or similar up to a year old.
