Rover 800 speedometer 5 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Most of the time it sits a zero whilst the car is being driven. I know these are electronic speedo heads and don't have a cable running to the gearbox - does anyone have any suggestions to the cause of this problem, I believe it's quite common on the 800 series. One possibility may be a loose multiplug connector at the back of the instruments? -
Volvo 760 Turbo - fuel additive 6 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Been told by the Volvo owners club not to use LRP in a turbo engine: 1. Why? 2. Can I use Millers VSP and fill up with unleaded 95? The car can run happily on unleaded, it just needs the 98 stuff. -
BMW Computer 17 Mar 2004 (Forum)
The computer has packed up once and been replaced with a s/h one. Now gone the same way as the first unit ant the car wont run. Anyone know of a company or person who could sort it at prehaps component level rather than junking the whole box of tricks. Anyone here with knowledge of these engine management systems- replies appreciated. -
Short holidays and SORN 15 Mar 2004 (Forum)
It seems silly to declare SORN if it's going back on the road in a fortnight, but I assume that if we don't, we will get clobbered by the new regs. Can we still apply early for the tax to run from next month, and will that cover it? Apologies if the answer to this is already here somewhere - I just haven't seen it. -
volvo 440 2.0 si stuttering 14 Mar 2004 (Forum)
help!!!!!!! my volvo 440 2.0 si (m plate) runs lovley and is very fast but has an intermittent stutter that cuts engine performance by at least 40% , there is no reason to it, one min its fine the next it judders and underperforms. the strange thing is if you nearly red line every gear it doesnt seem to happen, but due to 9 speeders on my licence already i cant drive like that!!!! -
VW polo cold start 5 Mar 2004 (Forum)
The car starts fine in the morning but after a minute or two the revs die away and it cuts out, starts again fine but again after a couple of minutes it dies again. Its only when theres a bit of heat in the engine that it runs ok. Its only been this over the last week. Could it have something to do with the inlet manifold preheater relay in the ECU. oh it a 1992 polo single-point injection. Any ideas?? -
96 Golf TDI-sell or keep? 29 Feb 2004 (Forum)
This is a second car and is also used by 17yo son. 82000 miles, cambelt done at 65000, going well apart from occas electrical glitches. Boot gets a bit wet. Only worth £1800-£2K on trade-so would you just run it on 'til it drops or is it a big repair bill waiting to happen? It does the job for me at the moment and with a young driver would hesitate at letting him in a new car. -

Rover 45 cold start problem 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I have a Y reg petrol 45 that has begun to have engine start problems on cold frosty mornings. The engine cranks but I need to put my foot on the gas to get the engine running. At all other times the engine starts no problem. The problem has only come on this winter (last couple of months). It's been in the garge for an updated 'tune' but that hasn't resolved the problem. -
Americans ! 14 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Bit like all those double-cab truck things that are sprouting up everywhere over here - since they're trucks as far as the VAT man is concerned they're cheaper to run than your Mr Farmers Off-Road vehicle - nice to know where your tax goes ! :-)) -
One Junction, 73 Sets of Traffic Lights 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Bought the Daily Mail today, as it's running a diet that sounds interesting, and there is an article, with a photo, about a roundabout at the end of the M27 in Portsmouth that has been replaced with an intersection with 73 sets of traffic lights. -

VW Golf MkIV 1.6 coil pack failure? 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Dear all, Just tried to start my Golf MkIV 1.6 16v and it's sounding like it's running on three cylinders. It's also smoking and is more difficult to start. Also the check engine light is flashing. Does the dreaded coil pack problem that is plaguing larger VAG engines affect this engine as well or is it likely something else? -

Vectra Auto Gearbox Question 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
An aquaintance has purchased a nearly new Vectra ('51 reg) with an auto gearbox. He has owned autos for years, and every one did not run backwards downhill when in Drive. Except this one. He has exhausted the local Vauxhall dealer, they have referred him direct to Vauxhall, who say that the new gearbox does not have antirunback feature as a fuel economy measure. -
Peugeot 1.9 Tdi 13 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I am after some advice on behalf of a mate - his head gasket has gone on his 1.9SDlt 306 sedan - M reg. I have looked at the oil and it seems ok, though there is evidence of coolant running down the block, it looks like it has come from the head gasket just behind the fuel pump/govenor thingy. Any advice on how much this will cost to replace, will it be throwing money away? Thanks in advance, Mike. -
Opel Parts Online 29 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone know where I can get part numbers and pricing for the 17D Isuzu engine fitted to my friend?s 1996 Opel Combo he runs here in Jordan? Either online or without obligation by email? The dealer here does not have the right parts catalogue. It is the same non-turbo engine used by Vauxhall. Would Vauxhall part numbers be recognised by an Opel dealer abroad? -
How does a fuel tank work? 12 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Don't want to be totally ignorant here, but how exactly does a fuel tank work - everyone says don't run down the fuel tank to empty or you will pick up all the carp from the bottom of the tank. But surely the pipe from the tank must be at the bottom of the tank? Or is it slightly higher in which case how would the carp get from the bottom of the tank up into the pipe?
