  • Motorway miles. 20 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Always confused when I read an ad. that states high mileage but motorway miles. What does this mean? Are they incinuating less wear and tear? The engine still runs when you drive on a motorway, you still brake. what about in heavy traffic? The clutch gets a hammering here too? And how do you get onto a motorway? I'd say doesn't make any difference at all. I'll always ignore an ad that says *motorway miles* Opinions?
  • Two stroke oil - any difference? 14 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Sorry, non-motoring, but petrol engine content. I've just aquired a two-stroke petrol strimmer, no manual or stuff but I've found it should run on 40:1 two stroke fully synthetic oil. Is there anything to stop me using fully synth normal car oil - I've got half a container of Halfords stuff left over from the last car oil change. cheers Martin
  • French diesel fuel 25 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I am convinced that our Megane gives us about 4 to 5 mpg more when running on french diesel. In the UK I generally use BP or Texaco and average 50mpg. In France I fill up with whatever is convenient at the time at we seem to average 55mpg. Driving conditions are similar, length of journeys perhaps a bit longer.
  • Clio 1.9tdi starting problem 23 Feb 2005 (Forum)
There was no problem whatsoever prior to the change, but it now turns over for 10 seconds or so before finally springing to life in a puff of grey smoke. Once started it runs fine and also starts fine once warm. Anyone know what the cause may be or if I need to prime the fuel system in any way? Thanks, Mark

  • Honda CR-V tyre changes 5 Jan 2005 (Forum)
A neighbour of mine has just had a new set of tyres fitted to a Honda CR-V. He was told by the tyre fitters that he needed to change the complete set because running this type of 4x4 with some new and some part-worn tyres would damage the transmission. Has anyone else heard of this? Is it true and if so what is the reason? I am sure someone out there can enlighten me...
  • Civic servicing 4 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi I have a 9 year old Civic which I have serviced my self for the past 5 years, oil, filters etc and it seems to run fine. The car passes its MOT with no problems. What checks and adjustments has the engine been missing out on over the last 5 years, if I was to put the car in for a tune up which tasks should I ask for?
  • Car less than 2k? 2 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Backroom, What would you buy if your looking for something cheap, reliable, dont want to spend too much money (i.e not over 2k but willing to spend slightly more if the right car comes along) and something my mom would consider still to have some street cred? This will be a little run about car locally, so preferably cheap on fuel, any help or ldeas? Thanks in advance
  • Saxo 1.6 engine diagnostic light on 19 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Hi, Friend of mine has a 51 plate Citroen Saxo 1.6 VTR. Three times now the engine diagnostic light has come on. The engine runs and performs perfectly. It's been to the Citroen garage and been fixed by changing a switch. Yet again it's come on and she wants to know if this is common and fixable. Thanks -- These are the views of Robin the Technician with 35 years in the trade.
  • Renault Scenic wipers 28 Oct 2004 (Forum)
The wipers on my R reg Megaine Scenic have gone berzerk! On intermittant they run constantly for several wipes then stop mid-screen, putting switch in off position, they continue to wipe, back to normal wipe they stop when they want to. Argh. Local Renault dealer says "might be switch, might be relay" and won't give me even an idea of cost of repair.
  • New diesel tips please 21 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Apart from boring SWMBO to death with pleas about not forgetting this when filling the tank, what else should I know about owning, driving and running a diesel car? (Apologies if this has been covered in threads passim, but a site search on 'diesel' had a predictably huge response)
  • Setting up an SU carb 19 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Can any of you advise me of any good books or websites which can help me with setting up my SU carb in my Mini. It seems to be running quite rich. There seems to be two adjustment screws on, but I dont know which to turn/which direction to turn them. Got the Haynes manual for the car but it does not say to much about setting the carb so I have come to a stop.
  • Nut lock on cam tensioner? Citroen Saxo. 3 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Boring wet afternoon so I decided to change the cam belt on the wifes 8v Saxo. Just about to put it back together when I noticed I was out of nut lock. Local Halfords have run out (typical) and all other outlets now closed. Should I wait till tomorrow to get some or just put it back without putting anything on the threads?
  • Forseeable mistakes by car industry 21 Sep 2004 (Forum)
In several recent threads we've discussed car manufacturers running into trouble because they missed somthing most people could see quite easily. For example: City Rover pricing X-Type launch engine range Right Hand Drive versions of large French cars (607, Vel Satis) Can anyone think of similar/ealier tales?
  • Depreciation cost 31 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Ignoring costs of fuel, insurance, servicing, road fund licence (all more or less common to any car) and limiting my calculation only to depreciation and loss of interest on the £20k+ originally tied up, my car has cost me £269 per month. How much to run a banger? £50 per month + repairs + tax?
  • Fiat Uno 1ie '94 squealing 24 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The noise doesn't change when clutch pedal is used so I don't think it's the release bearing. It doesn't seem to be linked with any particular running condition just seems random and sometimes quite loud. Anybody got any clues?
  • Out of the mouths of babes & ... 4 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Streaky blonde gives it lots of welly and disappears out of sight with a great noise redolent of tearing calico and neglect. Lots of little boys (2 to 4 years old) playing in a gang are very impressed and run across, one earnestly called out to the hulk, "Daddy, what is it, a go cart?"
  • Hard Top Security Issues 21 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I remember reading some time ago that certain OEM hard tops are extremely vulnerable to theft, - I seem to recall the Mazda MX5 and also BMW 3 Series convertibles, when fitted with the optional hard tops, are quickly and easily removable by the pond life opportunists. My son is considering buying a Porsche Boxter and was wondering if anybody on the forum owns or runs one of these vehicles and knows if their hard tops are secure from theft or not??
  • 98 mondeo V6 platinum plugs 10 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I'm sure they are platinum as that's what they fitted when the car was new. I heard somewhere once that they should last 100000? not sure, car runs ok with reasonable fuel economy for size of engine. thanks in advance.
  • Ford Escort XR3i Ignition warning lamp 5 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Now I know that if alternator not charging as it should then warning ignition lamp will display, but what is this: Switch on ign/OP lamps glow. Starter operates no bother and engine fires. Ign/OP lamps go out while engine in running. Switch off - Ign warning lamp comes on and stays on. Has me baffled. Nothing in Haynes. Any pointers ? Switch itself? DVD
