How crooks are stealing cars without a key 16 Mar 2015 (Forum)
In addition, they seized five Range Rovers and hundreds of vehicle parts, believed to have been from 12 BMWs stolen from London. That long, cold wait by the A13 had been worth it after all. How do the thieves do it? There are a variety of ways criminals can gain access to a keyless car. -
Cabrio joy 10 May 2020 (Forum)
I’ve been thinking of convertibles again and getting misty eyed for my old MX5 but cost no object what was or is the best convertible car ever built? Does the classic British roadster do it for you? How about a BMW or Mercedes? To me it has to be fun above all else but there’s a convertible for every man or woman but which one was the greatest of them all in your opinion? I get the appeal of a luxury convertible like the Mercedes SL or Jaguar XJS, in fact I’ve nearly bought a 124 series E Class cabrio in the past, I just like the lines and the quality of the thing but I know that it’s absolutely no fun to drive and there’s my problem, convertibles should be fun and thus I’d get bored quickly. -
Audi Q7 - Mis-sold car from Audi, let down by FOC 6 May 2016 (Forum)
Rang sales man, he new exactlty what he had done and admited he didnt now what previous owners ment, I stated my concern with the depreciation in value of the car and he agreed, telling me its fine if he couldnt get me a good price on the car when I go to part ex it he would find a buyer from Mercedes, BMW etc as they are all part of the same group??. Manager wrote in writing confirming there had been a mistake and appologised after giving me hell on the phone. He would not guarentee in writiing that the car would not loose money because of the extra owner etc. -
Driving/cars in Australia and New Zealand 18 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I spotted a Morris Marina van, Lancia Thema, Escort MK2, Cortina MK2, two late Rover SD1, Rover 600, two Citroen BX, a 1960s Mercedes saloon and numerous Japanese cars c.25 years or more old. These included Subaru Legacy, Toyota Carina (Caldina), MK2/4 Honda Civic, 1980s Accord. BMWs are very rare ( expensive new, a 520i starts at £42,000) although I saw a couple of E30 3-series and a few E34 5-series. In a 20 miles stetch of rural NZ I spotted four VW Golfs of various ages. -
Hyundai i30 (2007 - ) - Review 20 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Press reception was lukewarm, for example: --?The appearance is bland.? Only about the same as most modern similar-sized cars, including some BMWs, but optional black side strips set off the flanks. -?The cabin is dull.? It is unobtrusive but the plastics are good and the fittings excellent, with some nice touches like the double-lidded armrest between the front seats with a small picnic table under the top lid and, below that, a capacious locker for camera, mobile phones etc. with a connection for i-Pods (USB cable supplied). -
New car shortlist - who's going to help? 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
But the combination of smallish body and beefy engine is tempting. I found the 140 had plenty of oomph - haven't tried a 170 but see Skoda below. BMW 320 - these are being discounted heavily by Drivethedeal who don't do PX - other brokers who do may allow less than a dealer would. Excellent to drive, as expected, although manual gearchange disappointingly notchy. -
Had An Accident Today - Uninsured Pilloc 25 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Both then claimed there was no accident - luckily a police car came along in the other direction - the cop in the bmw asked with windo down any injuries, the g Fiat driver said no, within a split second and cop said we are going. Luckily I used my brain for once ans shouted, I don't belive the guys details, but had not even took them - the police turned around the car, all traffic in the narrow high street held up. -
A popular car in Iraq... 24 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Another European embassy has blown up the engine of their new (unarmoured) EEC-spec Isuzu Trooper V6 after driving it at full throttle for hours on end, on mid-70s octane fuel, evading an old BMW 735i full of Iraqis waving guns out of the window on the main road back to Jordan (they escaped). The Isuzu V6 engine has anti-knock sensors but cannot cope with petrol you would be hard pushed to set light to with a match. -

This led to a competition at Brooklands on Whit Monday 1939 involving Arthur Dobson driving Rob Walker's 3.5 litre Delahaye, A.F.P. Fane in a works 2.0 litre BMW 328, Ian Connell in a 4.0 litre Darracq, P. Aitken in a 3.0 litre Delage, Dorndof in a 2.0 litre Peugeot, Cowell in a 2.0 litre supercharged Alta and Templar in a 2.5 litre supercharged Alfa Romeo. -
Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - Test Drive - Impressions 2 Oct 2007 (Forum)
OK, you could argue our standards are not high with our existing cars, but I travel quite a lot in BMWs, Mercedes and Audis, and I know how these things feel, and the Ford is definitely in the same ballpark. It feels like it will still be working perfectly in 10 years time. It also seemed a little more spacious inside than the Renault, particularly in terms of rear seat legroom, although I found the "split" A pillars a little weird at first. -
vw quality and profits 19 Nov 2006 (Forum)
``The image of Audi has been changed from that of `the poor man's Mercedes' to being right in the mix with BMW and Mercedes,'' Stephen Pope, head of equity research at Cantor Fitzgerald in London with a ``buy'' rating on the shares. ``Winterkorn has the ability to take his proven magic from the luxury end of the market and cast a similar spell over the VW mass brand and over the group as a whole.'' -
see if I care..... 15 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Doesn\'t seem that important so that can wait. Upholstery is OK but I will get it redone (my local guy does repair work for the BMW dealer so he\'ll do a good job). There\'s a hole where the original radio/8-track used to be. I talked to the Mustang Owners\' Club and these seem to be as scarce as rocking horse droppings. Pity, some Doors/Hendrix w.h.y would set the whole thing off nicely. -
LJK Obits and more 21 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Having studied music as a child, he became expert on the clarinet as a band member in the RAF, and played it all his life. Fellow journalists remember him producing his instrument at the launch of a BMW model in France in the 1970s, and striking up with a jazz band. He was a fine singer, and a founder member of the Philharmonia Chorus (one treasured memory was a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, under Otto Klemperer). -
Top 10 diesels on the market 11 Feb 2007 (Forum)
New Mini On sale: Spring 07 Pros: You won?t have missed the brouhaha about the spot-the-difference new Mini. Understandably, BMW took an if-it-ain?t-broke approach to the second-generation car, on sale now. Mini?s management is keeping tight-lipped, however, about the new diesel which arrives in the spring. We hope it will have more oomph than the improved version of the Toyota-sourced unit found in the last model. -
Sports potato! 8 May 2020 (Forum)
Usually it’s done well (Peugeot 405 Mi 16, 205 GTi, 306 GTi 6, Nissan Primera ZX, R21 Turbo, Focus/Fiesta ST, BMW M3/M5) but often in the past manufacturers have sadly put in too little effort. What are the least sporty sports cars you have owned or driven? Here are some I’ve experienced that served no purpose other than to look good in showrooms but were rightly panned by owners and critics alike. -
2yrs on from buying a 9yr old dpf-equipped diesel 10 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Hardly any wear and tear, rear seats look like new. Much better than the black 'Dakota' leather in a previous BMW 120D I had. Comparable to W124 leather. Paintwork seems of a high quality. Cubby holes everywhere, hidden ones, sliding drawers etc. Useful Excellent BOSE stereo. Double sunroof is good. -
Skoda Yeti - My Yeti(s) 25 Mar 2018 (Forum)
It's current (trade) valuation stands at £6700 - £8300 (I paid £19k in 2014) and I was offered £8500 in part-ex (against an alternative marque - BMW). I test drove all alternatives (3008, Ateca, Kodiak and Karoq) and after driving each car got back in my Yeti and decided none of them were worth the ~£15k I would need to pay, in addition to the value of my car, to own one. -
Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 diesel - First 5 months of ownership 25 Feb 2012 (Forum)
It is to my mind half a size bigger than the others with noticeably more rear legroom and boot space. I was recently in a BMW X5 and that seems to have a little bit less space inside than the Santa Fe but is bigger on the outside. The engine and auto gearbox work really well and are the stars of the show especially as the engine seems to be bedding in with the miles. -
Peugeot? Skoda? and others - Search for a car 1 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Saw one in a showroom 1 year back and thought the interior was gorgeous Seemed to meet our needs in terms of space and size though even 1 year ago we were unsure if we still needed 7 seats, and we stayed with the Grandis The 2008 has been just out long enough that there is some (not many) in stock in our budget, even with the highly rated 1.6 THP engine (apparently same as BMW put in the MIni Cooper?) Wasn't sure if Mrs G would like it and if, when driven, it would live up to my expectations. Helpful Salesman, just right balance of sales patter and leaving us to think and talk between us. -
Subaru Forester - First 2 months and 2,000 miles of ownership 27 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I chose the car as it is large enough for my needs, has a decent petrol engine and Subarus get generally excellent ownership reviews. It also offered better value than the BMW, Mercs and Audis I considered and a 5 year warranty is also worth having. Subaru only do three trim levels in petrol, XC, XE and XT with a premium pack if you want leather and satnav. This model is the mid range XE model so is well equipped: Cruise control Reversing camera Electric drivers seat Dual climate Sunroof HID lighting Heated seats Auto lights and wipers Folding mirrors Bluetooth with voice activation USB, Aux and Bluetooth audio options And of course it has permanent 4WD.
