  • VW Passat 130 PD AWX - VW 130 PD rough or smooth? 19 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me if this is normal, how smooth should it be, would it be worth getting a diagnostic run ?  Seemed OK on the test drive but now I have done a few hundred mixed miles not so sure.  any advice from the many experts welcome   PS  A 160 miles run of A roads and some motorway gave me average of 43 mpg.
  • Vauxhall Zafira 2001 1.6 - Rough Running 8 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Hi, my zafira has started to run rough once its warmed up. It started when I stopped once and the idle rev's decreased. Not to stall but very lumpy. Its the Z16XE engine Next day the EML came on and it went to limp mode and was very very lumpy and sounded like it had a mis-fire.
  • BMW 3 series convertible 325ci - 2001 - BMW 3 series engine 'roughness' 11 Aug 2010 (Forum)
During one of those episodes something else went wrong within the engine that despite the breather problem now having been cured, by way of its replacement, the engine continues to run out of balance. The whole of the ignition side has been reviewed, repaired and or replaced and the tests show that is all is running fine yet the problem continues to persist. The head gasket is fine and there is no water in the engine oil or water or oil loss so the block and the head seem to be fine.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 52 reg TDCi 130 - Hesitation/Running Problem 1 Feb 2010 (Forum)
New to this site but remember Honest John from UCB magazine so glad I found this site. Can anyone help me?! My 52 Ford Mondeo TDCI 130 with 118000 miles on it (FSH), has started running badly. My car keeps 'hestitating'. It usually happens when I'm driving at between 1800-2200 RPM, in 4th or 5th gear and doing about 45-55MPH - I'm not sure of the right word to use, but it feels like it's 'kangarooing'!
  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 04 2.2 Water running temperature when fully warmed 6 Dec 2009 (Forum)
For example I drove 90 miles yesterday on a mix of country, town and motorway roads, the outside temperature was about 10 degrees and it never went above about 83 degrees which seems to me too cool Every car I have owned; once warmed up runns at 90 degrees and I am concirned that this will increase my fuel consumption. My questions are: What is the correct running temperature of the water in a Zafira 2.2 SRi once warmed up. What effect will this have on the fuel consumption I'm guessing that the guage or thermometer may be at fault or the garage did not do the repair.
  • Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - 99 2.0 TD poor running, won't rev? 26 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The most obvious fault is that the car won't rev beyond 3200rpm when hot. When cold it'll happily rev (very smokily) but after running for 20 minutues when the temperature reaches half way, it won't go about 3200 rpm. It's like it hits the rev limiter at 3300 rpm, the car doesn't stall but stays at that engine speed and just occilates between 3000-3500.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - water run off from tailgate glass each side edge 25 Mar 2008 (Forum)
In the Honest John review of the mark 2 focus they mention the rain runoff from the edge seam of the hatchback glass are there any fixes, symptom after rain if you open and lift the tailgate hatch , water held in the open seam of where the tailgate glass is bonded to the tailgate runs off into the boot . This sounds trivial but it isnt as a lot of water can be held there, I wondered if the seam which is like a long gap can be sealed with some sort of flexible sealant (clear obviously) to prevent the water being held in it and if doing so will make replacement of the glass (if ever it has to be done) difficult.
  • Media used to influence holiday traffic flow? 25 Mar 2008 (Forum)
If this leads to quiet roads and quick journeys then thats great for us motorists who ignored the warnings and the government too as its less congestion, pollution and fewer accidents. But its bad news for the press who run a story which never occurs and therefore they lose credibility. Which makes me wonder why the stories are ever run at all - unless someones got a vested interest?
  • Citroen AX (1987 -1997) - '95 1.0 Dimension, cold start problems. 3 Jan 2008 (Forum)
If I don't leave it to warm up for a few minutes, the engine bogs down when I use the throttle. Release the throttle and it revs again. Only happens when it's cold. As soon as it warms up it runs well. There was a slight burning smell whilst trying to run it cold and some smoke around the exhaust pipe (not coming out of it) I thought it was the autochoke needing adjusting or sticking, but the engine has a Bosch monopoint fuel injection system, so no choke.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 1997 TDS (isuzu) - rev counter 3 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I managed to do 250 motorway miles today with lights on, at the end of the journey still getting 12.5 volts across the battery with the engine running. So the alternator seems to be working to some degree, but something is still definitely up. With the engine running shouldn't I be getting about 13.5 volts across the battery? Could this be caused by V drive belt being loose?
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - Diesel Fuel Quality 30 Oct 2007 (Forum)
For the last few weeks I had been running my Vectra CDTi1.9 on Shell V diesel to see what difference it made to the economy and performance to justify the extra cost. Over 2500 miles I found that it did accelerate better but the engine didnt seem to run quite as smoothly as it had on ordinary diesel and the economy was only marginally better too.
  • Daewoo Matiz, EGR valve fault 28 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Disregarding for the moment, if that is the case, why I'm being quoted the earth to fix this fault, I was wondering how do-able it would be to source the part and fit it myself (or get my friendly local mechanic to do so?). Alternatively (and bearing in mind that the car appears to be running fine at the moment with the fault), is it an option just blithely to ignore the fault, and keep running the car? Thanks in advance for any advice given. {Try this one. - PU} http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?
  • MK1 Mondeo TD Running Fault... 9 Apr 2007 (Forum)
After it has been stood for a while (like 8 hours or so), it will not start. Or, more accurately, it normally DOES start, runs for 2-3 seconds, then dies (revving does not save it). Once it has dies, it normally takes a pump or two on the primer to get it restarted. But it does seem pretty random. Today I started to play around with the fuel lines, and worked my way backwards down the line, and it would appear that no fuel is coming through from the tank, into the first line in the engine bay.
  • Bentley Running Costs 10 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I am trying to find out the cost of running a used Bentley. Obviously I would expect my fuel bill to just about double, based on getting around 30-35 MPG at present. Insurance would also be a bit more. What I'm interested in are the servicing costs more than anything.
  • petril versus diesel 24 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hello All, I'm having trouble costing out the difference between running diesel and petrol cars. I've run diesels for quite a long time and have always been happy with the mpg. However, some time ago I bought the wife a used Nissan Almera 1.4 petrol. She's a gentle driver and regularly gets over 40mpg on a run.
  • ZX 1.4 head gasket?? 29 Dec 2004 (Forum)
But I would have thought with a new thermostat (88 deg) that it should run cooler, especially when the ambient temp is only 3 degrees. The reason I am concerned about the head gasket is that while changing the coolant over Xmas I noticed some brown mayo/sludge in the header tank.
  • Ford Fiesta 1.0 H Reg (Oil using) 2 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I finished Uni last year and bought a Ford Fiesta 1.0 from a local garage (H reg). It is in great condition and has been a very good runner so far. I bought it as a little run-around, but then I got a job that involves a far bit of mileage (around 200-300 miles per week) and am worried that it is too much for such a small car. But, like I said, it runs fine. However, there is one problem, it seems to be using a lot of oil.
  • VW TDI Starting noise 20 Oct 2004 (Forum)
But, the cog doesn't seem unduly worn. Can the starter jam up inside and effectively stop the engine running? Any other cause for this worrying noise???!!! Any help and advice much appreciated.
  • Running costs 26 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I had always thought that depreciation was the biggest cost of motoring but looking at the figures it is a reasonably close run thing with fuel. If the fuel economy had been 25mpg it would have equalled depreciation costs. This for a car that has depreciated a lot. Have I made a mistake or is fuel really the main cost in driving a car.
