  • Is it just me or is old age creeping on? 21 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Surely there is not such a paucity of creative talent that they have to revert to unpleasant, tawdry smut of this nature. I once complained to the Advertising Standards Authority about an ad for a BMW that talked about the lines of the car and the neat way they had dealt with the complex angles cause by the conjunction of the wing, bonnet and windscreen that they desribed as being "a corner that is forever Munich".
  • Yaris D4D vs Golf TDI 130 12 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I bought the Golf over the Christmas hols in a hurry after I rejected my new MINI Cooper, following legal advice. But that\'s another story! The early BMW Mini\'s were not good news... To put this into context, I commute 40 miles a day to work and back. While I am very pleased with the Golf (it goes hard and it\'s very solidly built), I have done my sums and worked out that a company lease car could work out cheaper.
  • Best secondhand motor for £10k? 22 Feb 2003 (Forum)
We're off tomorrow morning at 11 to trawl the dealers. Not a *huge* amount of choice here in Guernsey but the main makes are well represented (VW/Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Vauxhall, Mazda, Honda, Renault). Your thoughts appreciated!
  • You'd banger believe it. 23 Dec 2002 (Forum)
That's one happy ending for a stolen car story, and here's another - a violent London gang responsible for stealing £350,000-worth of cars were jailed yesterday for a total of 80 years. The seven youths, aged 17-20, stole 19 BMWs, Mercedes, Audis and Subarus, forcing their owners to hand over keys and carrying out 'car-jack' attacks, using guns and knifes and, in some cases, forcing their way into victims' homes to get their car keys.
  • Replacement Car 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I am leaning towards the audi as I have owned an audi coupe and liked the quality, and the fuel economy is the best. I am not too enamoured with the bmw, they are expensive but the residual should be best. Which is the better engine the 318 and 325 engines? I also like the merc, but the fuel economy is fairly low. and I can't find any. What is the diff between the 250 and 220?
  • Tyre Wear & Suspension Design 11 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I don't go hurtling round corners, but I can certainly feel the responsiveness of the cars suspension. BMW 3 series are still recognised to hold the yardstick for suspension design, so do they also suffer from short tyre life? My B in L tells me that he is lucky to get 15K from the rear wellies of his XK 8.
  • Reborn classics - your choices? 5 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Same goes for most old, RWD Alfas - lovely to drive, from all I've heard, very pretty, dreadfully built. Alfa needs that character back, but with better quality. BMW Z8 - I know, never a great car, and pretty recent, but it looked gorgeous. Now, we just need to sort out the handling issues... Mini (the lowercase Issigonis original). I really, REALLY don't need to explain.
  • Testing a Kuga PHEV 27 Jun 2020 (Forum)
So the Kuga is a good one to think about, but the rest of the year should be interesting with some more PHEVs in the pipeline: Skoda Octavia, Renault Captur, and BMW X1 and 330e Touring.  The last two may come out too expensive if some of the essentials (like lumbar support) are on the options list.  That's already the case with the Volvo XC40, and Volvo petrol engines all seem to be distressingly heavy drinkers.
  • Range Rover P38, 1995, Manual Diesel - Range Rover P38 - Diesel not starting/running 6 Nov 2019 (Forum)
It is a complicated tail and have posted on specialist forum but not really got a definitive guide on what to do next. These engines are a BMW M51 direct injection, 6 cylinder, timing chain with a fuel injection pump modulated off timing chain. Very complicated computer systems involved on these cars.  Below is what I have tried 1.
  • VW Glf gti - VW Golf Drive Chain failure 21 May 2018 (Forum)
Inchcape Volkswagen have also declined to offer any compensation.  This is very similar to the BMW issue reported  and appears very widespread.   Any help or advice very welcome
  • Ford Focus Mk2, 2007 1.6. - Recommendations, please. 7 Nov 2016 (Forum)
OK, there's a great deal to be said for keeping a known and generally reliable car on the road by spending modest amounts of money, but I think at 75k miles and six years in our possession its time to move on. I did ask a question a while ago on here about second hand BMWs, but eventually concluded that buying a vehicle I know nothing about and which if it went wrong could prove to be a money pit would be a risky move, especially for someone who is retired with a fairly modest disposable income.
  • 2008 Ford Focus 2.0l DUratec Auto - Gearbox and Aux Belt servicing advice + Start Prob 14 Dec 2014 (Forum)
It looks like it has never been done and looking through the service literature it doesn't list any shcedule for doing it? We have a BMW 540 and the gearbox has been serviced every 5 years. ALso it lists the auxilliary belt as being changed every 10 years or 125k miles. I can't help but think this is too long. It has developed a squeak when cold.
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe CDI250 62Reg - Pulling Left 19 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I have had a google around and can’t even find that much chatter about it – surely if it was that common a problem, more people would be discussing it? Or is it just me? None of my previous cars (BMW, Audi, Ford) have pulled in this fashion... Any advice on here for where to go, or what to do next? What might be causing the vehicle to pull? It’s really frustrating to have a new vehicle behave this way (particularly one I was so excited about) and to not be able to get to the bottom of it.
  • Mile Muncher Required: Used 2nd Car. 5 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Add another 50k and part ex for similar replacement or it dies and I'm not too much out of pocket. Repeat as required. 4) Any ideas over a good car for this? I'm 28 so as much as I'd love a bmw 520d I imagine the insurance would be prohibitive as a 2nd car unless I go 3rd party and cross my fingers. Currently I'm looking down passat/octavia 1.9tdi dsg route. Am I looking in the wrong place?
  • Independents vs main dealers, round 48 4 Jan 2013 (Forum)
The independent's comment about 'fallacy' of latest software is interesting. I've often wondered about this, having agreed to an ecu firmware upgrade on a past car, a BMW 120d, with a charge attached. If the software is resolving issues and the car is under warranty, shouldn't that be free? Perhaps the next time a dealer recommends a software upgrade, ask to see the release notes, see what it's meant to fix or improve.

  • Care to repair? 24 Jan 2010 (Forum)
This neglect is not a function of wealth. He is a reasonably comfortably off individual and keeps his wife in new BMWs on a contrastingly regular basis. He just doesn't seem to care very much about his own cars appearance and treasures only its functionality. I know such an attitude to cars is alien to most in the BR but I can't help admiring his pragmatism.
  • Subaru Impreza III (2008 -) - 1000+km in new Impreza 22 Oct 2007 (Forum)
This model has electric PAS and unfortunately has that slightly wooden feeling that many of these systems have - it feels a bit like a BMW Mini in that respect, to be honest. Not nearly as nice as the steering of the old car. Japanese roads are very smooth and well graded - so its hard to comment on the ride as it would be experienced in UK.
  • The benefit of a good dealer 5 Jun 2007 (Forum)
We got £1000s knocked off for being a Vauxhall Partner and having GM points so it was a bit of a no brainer. Went to look at an old shape 3 series but that was still way too expensive and the BMW "salesmen" ignored me anyway. Not being a Premiership footballer they probably thought I was too poor. VW, amazingly, wanted the same sort of money as the Saab for an Eos but as you know I've been stung by VWs in the past so that was never likely to happen.
  • More Auction advice please 21 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I had some good advice from the BR with regard to selling my 170K mileage BMW with the consensus that it would be best sold on Autotrader rather than my thoughts of sending the car to auction. BUT !! The new car - Mazda 6 2.0TS -arrives next week, I don?t have room to store an extra car, and my wife is very nervous about possible low life types turning up when I?
