Freelander TD4 opinions? 1 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Ok, I do not know too much about Freelanders, I know I dont want a 1.8 K-Series one or a 2.5V6 for that matter, I also know the early (Rover 'L' Series?) diesels were very rough so it would have to be a BMW engined TD4, so when were these launched, I guess 2000?, has the engine spec changed since then, if so when? What is the best trim level? What is there to look out for? I am in two minds, I really am not sure if I am after support for a Freelander purchase or back up when I tell the wife why we are keeping the Clio. -

irresponsible OLD drivers! 30 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Driving up the M1 yesterday morning. Traffic heavy but motoring reasonably well. In a line of traffic which included Nissan Skyline, BMW M3 csl and Disco 3 and my Scooby. Pick up a flash of colour in the mirrors - yellow. It gets closer and looks like Ferrari F40. It is weaving in and out of lanes and frequently straddling lanes. -
Registration No or Driver No? 18 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Anyway, does anyone know if I recall this correctly or not - perhaps any Canadian back roomers can help - and if right or not, could such a system work in the UK? Just think, no one would know that you'd just bought that brand new BMW!!! -
Channel 5 Autobahn programme 6 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I loved the bit about it being illegal to flash drivers from behind to get them to move over and that you were 'expected/obliged' to get out of the way for any car approaching from behind that carried a BMW, Audi, Mercedes or VW badge - funny they didn't mention Porche, unless I missed it. They don't seem to have jam problems as when busy the hard shoulder is made available as an extra lane and in practice works. -
Honda IMA 23 Aug 2005 (Forum)
(Remember to depress clutch or it won't start for some American reason), silent tick over (ad to check rev counter to confirm it was running), Gear change is the best around that I've driven of late - the charge/assist graphics are a bit distracting at first and the tyres are a bit noisy (compared to the BMW) it pulls well in all gears, I found the cliamte fans a bit noisy. One of the guys in work commented that it may be complitcated and expensive to repair when it goes wrong - bit its a Honda for goodness sake ! -
Large 4x4s again! 23 May 2005 (Forum)
There is also limited difference in economy unless the MPVs are derv drinkers. So why is there a much greater backlash against the 4x4? One way around the problem is for Merc, BMW, & Volvo to produce prestige MPVs which are far more acceptable to the masses and Livingstone, unless of course Livingstone is simply a jealous ********* who won't let nayone else have what he can't have for himself. -
Car Mag Selections of Group Test Cars 3 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have just ordered a new Volvo S60 and I have tried to find it realistically compared with it's competition. It has a diesel engine widely praised and size / price-wise it should be up against 3 series BMW / C Class Merc / Audi A4 / Jag X-Type. But when we see group tests they only have the four cars above. Surely it would be good to see the SAAB 9-3, Alfa 156, Honda Accord, even high specced Mondeo's for example thrown into the mix. -
Considering a Golf 1.8 20v GTI 1998-2000 9 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Found it very hard to fault the rest of the car however. I actually consider the plastics in the golf to be better than the 1998+ audi a3 and bmw 3 series compact (latest one), with the audi coming a close second. Also I have heard about premature cambelt failure at about 70k-80k, surely the cambelt change should be before then, anyway? Any further details would be greatly appreciated. -
Was it worth it? 9 Aug 2004 (Forum)
By the time we reached the roundabout on the outskirts of Skipton the other car was just 6 cars in front of me - his stupidity had saved him about 10 seconds and no doubt raised his blood pressure no end. So to the driver of the BMW 3 series with a London reg. Was it worth it? -
ever heard of this? 29 May 2003 (Forum)
He was an experienced mechanic and at a garage he worked at a few years ago they had a problem with a car with an automatic gearbox which kept sticking in one gear and wouldn?t change up. He remembers it was either a BMW or Mercedes but wasn?t sure which. When everything failed they rang the manufacturers technical service and asked for help. The surprising answer knocked them askew. ?Has the customer recently had a puncture and fitted the spare and has he checked the pressure?. -
The Good News Thread ! 14 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Just read about a BMW 7 series V8 owner who's having his engine repaired FOC by the dealer. Spurred me on to report the good news about my tyres. Last week I just clipped the low lying and well worn plinth of a junction treatment with the O/R tyre whilst turning right and found myself with a nice big hole in the side wall of an almost new Michelin Energy 185/65 HR15 tyre. -
Pothole damage, KDS's what next 6 Aug 2002 (Forum)
The steering also felt different, I then got a Tyresafe compound fitted which also affected the steerting.I then dropped the car off to my local BMW dealer who KDS's the vehicle and altered the steering, this did improve the handling but things still felt wrong. I then had the tyresafe compound removed which also improved the handle, but again there was still something not quite right. Two weeks ago the car was KDS's again, they re-aligned the steering again and I did not really notice any difference. -
This is getting serious: £28K serious 13 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The question is out of my league and she is interested only in sitting in a car, having street cred, and driving about 35K business miles a year with 3-4K private. She's that sort. Has had series of company cars incl high spec VW Golf, alfa and presently a BMW M something which is like a tank (T reg). Company changing to salary increase, milage allowance and 'pick your own'.She wishes to out do the boss and take a 'you only pass here once' attitude. My limited (and she knows it) knowledge leads me only to say 'go for the top of the range VW Golf' and pocket the difference. -
Past quality 8 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Saab - 1986 9000 - These were very expensive things new, the turbos were priced to compete with the BMW 7 series rather than the 5 or the E class Mercedes. But with storming performance and outstanding interior quality it was understandable. These really were a quality car. A good family friend had an early 86 C plate 9000i for over a decade while we were growing up and I remember the feeling of sheer quality from the car. -
BMW 320d - Worrying bill from no win no fee guys! 20 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Hi all. I've been a keen honest John fan for many years, but now it's my turn to ask for some advice ad I'm actually fuming. Here’s the story…..... -
Grand estates 5 May 2020 (Forum)
Not sure I like the complexity though, I prefer my old basic wagons. BMW has to be in there too with some great drivers cars. Most were compromised for space in order to allow complex suspension setups that favoured driver over payload but the 3 and 5series routings have always been great cars. -
Audi Q2 - first 1,000 miles 25 May 2018 (Forum)
No good deals when I was looking in January, as it was too new on the market, but they'll come, and there's a lot of stuff that's standard on the T-Roc SEL which is extra even on the Q2 S-line. Well worth considering. BMW 220i Active Tourer - this came very close, but they don't hold their value as well as Q2s, the seats aren't very comfortable, and you have to put up with those infuriating BMW stalks for indicators and wipers. -
MINI Cooper S - New Mini Cooper SD (2014) 20 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Baring in mind the car is small and light, that with the fact it's basically got a twin turbocharged, 2 litre BMW engine - it goes really well, it's pokey as hell and you don't spend hardly anytime filling up at the pumps! I've been driving it hard and mainly in Sport mode and still I'm getting 50MPG, its a really nice car, if you don't mind losing the sound a Cooper S would provide (although it still sounds like a smooth, sport diesel) and you do decent journeys daily then the Cooper SD is for you, it eats up bends and flys on the motorway, when you put it in to perspective it's a small car with lots of torque, it keeps up and often destroys similar engines in the likes of Audi A3's and BMW 1/2/3 series. -
Low mileage Xantia - am I sane to reject 6 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The Audi won hands down on interior fittings ? but the Audi (and SE) cost nearly 60% more? Compared to an E36 BMW 318 the interior was unimpressive, the handling had no feel but it was much smoother to drive. With minimal work it would do another 150,000 miles with no trouble and would be a good buy but frankly it was overpriced and under specced.
