Volkswagen Golf I GTI and Citu Golf (1975 - 2009) - 'Best' modern petrol engine 7 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Presumably these were all derivatives of the same original engine. More up to date, a friend had, until recently, a BMW 330i which gave a wonderful blend of performance and mpg (30 overall with a light right foot)...whether this engine will prove as reliable in the long term remains to be seen. -
Wedding Bells - idiot local driver! 23 Dec 2008 (Forum)
A driver hired to transport a groom and bride to a wedding was arrested for reckless driving after clocking 170 kilometres an hour in a residential area, Cape Town metro police said on Wednesday. Principal Inspector Merle Lourens said police arrested the driver on Tuesday after the BMW he was driving was caught on camera three times doing 164km/h, 154km/h and 170km/h in a 60km/h zone in Goodwood on Saturday. "While the bride and groom were tying the knot, the driver decided to take the car for a spin," she said in a statement on Wednesday. -
Since you joined, how has Forum changed you? 6 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Almost 2 years in my case. 1) I`ve learnt a lot from Technical and as a result am more open to small petrol engines than before - FAP, common rail problems and so on. Screwloose and others providing an education 2) I feel better towards BMW`s and wouldn`t rule out owning one at some point. 3) While some Japanese cars are surely good, the seeming tendency of some owners to praise their own, ignore any threads about faults with it, yet seemingly gloat at faults posted about other marques... -
SEAT pulls out from Touring Cars 26 Sep 2008 (Forum)
ID=21191405 Is there any manufacturer coming in to replace them? Field is getting narrower and narrower and is really only going to have BMWs, Vauxhall and Honda with I think only Vauxhall being a manufacturers team. I only hope this does't mean BTCC is in decline, went to my first meeting this year at Knockhill and son and I had a fantastic day out! -
Recommend me a cheap convertible... 7 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Classier interior and great RWD handling. A very handsome shape I thought. Other possibilities would be a BMW Z3 or even a 90s Lotus Elan. Perhaps a leggy SLK might even be within reach after some serious haggling :-) Do back-roomers have any other suggestions? Left-field choices very welcome, as are wise comments on what not to go for... -
Indicators and/or mirrors - Optional or Failing? 11 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I do notice that a lot of drivers don't do this, or it seems look in their mirrors before maneuvering, and tallying them up, they tend to fall into the following car owners: 1. Mercedes 2. BMW (Mainly X5) 3. Range Rover 4. Jaguar Now, I've never visited any of the above showrooms, as I'm not interested in these marques. However it does worry me that Indicators and Mirrors are either optional accessories, or their is an inherent fault Should we contact the manufacturers and ask them about this common fault in their vehicles? -
Honda - Are they about to be the new Diesel kings ? 18 Nov 2007 (Forum)
From what I read (I have only been a passenger in an Accord i-CTDi - and I had to ask if it was a diesel) the diesel engine is already very refined and punchy even when compared to BMW diesels. So it looks like the new engine available next year could take diesel refinement to another level - although we also look forward to a new Subaru diesel boxer engine. If it is as good as they all say then I think I may be delaying my planned purchase and buying a diesel auto Accord estate next year. -
Motorway drivers 13 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Today, I was following another car, not too closely, but close enough that there was not a huge amount of space to fit another car in. A BMW driver missed his junction and simply went right through the gap without indication causing all manner of screaching and squealling sounds from an Outback and several other cars near me. Arrgh...... -

Why are supercars so wide? 16 Jul 2007 (Forum)
An MX-5 is surely the true size of a modern supercar, if only it had a nice 3.0 V8. I suppose a 911 comes close as well, but I just don't get the supercar of today; a BMW M5/6 is simply better. Apart from exclusivity, and they are getting more common near me, why would you buy a modern supercar? -
Special Branch, or Miami Vice? 11 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Parking outside the house 5.30ish today with my 11-year-old granddaughter, saw a pull on the other side of the road (a far from rare event actually in these parts). A navy blue Vauxhall people carrier with discreet behind-the-grille blues had pulled a 3 Series BMW convertible, same colour, roof up. You couldn't tell who the plod were, unless you assumed they were the three who were neither a black guy nor a blonde woman. One of them looked Middle Eastern. Then two more arrived in a maroon Mondeo with a magnetic blue on its roof. -
Total loss valuation 20 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Also, any ideas of what to replace it with, (I need an estate preferably)? Would you go new or say 18 months old? Audi, BMW, Subaru (no diesel version I know). -
Need a car for £100 2 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Do any of you have any suggestions on what would be a good thing to get, or indeed what it is best to avoid? Been leaning towards old examples of BMW/Mercs as in theory will have good engines but I don't really know how accurate that perception is. Simpler cars (Ford etc) will be easier to maintain or repair. Thanks in advance for any suggestions :-) -
The most boring car colour - ever! 3 Nov 2006 (Forum)
So just for the record here's a list of the colours of all the various cars and motorbikes I've owned over the years: White(TS50ER), red(XL125), red(Mk2 Escort), white(Lancia), orange(Fiesta), black(DT125), red(BMW), metallic green(Audi), metallic blue(Renault), red(Audi), white(Supra) Anyone else care to share their 'colour history'? -
Image - why is this country so obsessed? 6 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I've also travelled a lot in Germany and it always strikes me there how different they are too. True, BMWs and Mercs are still seen as a cut above but VWs are totally run of the mill. That's why they sell thousands upon thousands of them every month. The reason for my post was why are we so obsessed with image when other countries don't seem to be that fussed? -

Restored faith in my fellow man 3 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I was gutted, as my premium (which would have been 800 quid), would literally double if I lost 3 years NCB. He called Wednesday, explaining that he didn't go to BMW as it was too expensive but a local place would sort it for £300, which I sent him same day. Can't help but feel how totally lucky I have been and what a reasonable guy he is as there are others out there who would have used the situation to their advantage. -

Honda Civic or ? 14 Mar 2006 (Forum)
At present the new Honda Civic is top of their list, with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Jazz there as well. I have also suggested the Volvo V50, Alfa 157, BMW 1 series and the VW Golf. What other cars do you think they should look at that would meet their needs? -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say. -
The Audi is 2.... 27 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Secondly, if I'm going to pay less per month, the shortlist looks like the following: it doesn't *have* to be an automatic but I'd prefer it. VW Golf Plus 2.0 TDI DSG Skoda Octavia estate 2.0 TDI DSG Mercedes B200 CDI (CVT equivalent) BMW 320D ES Touring automatic (anyone know what sort of auto this is? - and I think it may eb too expensive anyway) Mazda 6 estate 2.0 diesel (but no auto) Ford C-Max 2.0 TDCI (auto is torque-converter and will sap performance) Audi A4 Avant 2.0 - might seem the obvious choice but still expensive and I might as well have the Golf or the Skoda as the engine is the same.
