ethanol and mpg - Fords new engine 31 May 2009 (Forum)
It now seems that Ford have been researching this and designed a "direct-injection ethanol engine". The engine runs on petrol but injects ethanol when maximum power is needed. The use of ethanol allows a higher compression ratio to be used. See this weeks new scientist for the article. -

I'm going to look at a brand new Vectra Exclusiv today and was wondering if anyone can report what their real world mpg is on long runs? I commute twice weekly, a distance of 400 miles and would hope to be getting at least the combined 40mpg they quote as achievable. -
Top Gear Thread - Volume 38 [Read Only] 15 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Was just going to watch the re-run of Sunday's TG on Beeb 2. I missed most of the Sunday one, only to discover that Bill Oddie, Kate Humble & co. are on instead. Ms Humble is quite scenic but I am a bit disappointed. If the JC gaffe was/is the problem why not edit or bleep it out for goodness sake ? -

Turbo diesel or not 27 Oct 2008 (Forum)
As far as I'm concerned the whole idea of owning a diesel is for economy bearing in mind that diesel fuel is about ten pence more per litre, a turbo might not be any cheaper to run than a petrol vehicle. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2001 1.6 rusty rocker cover 16 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have a 306 (1.6), and the rocker cover appears to have surface rust all over it. Is this a fairly rommon issue? Is it safe to keep running the car with it? Or, would it be advisable to get the rocker cover replaced as soon as possible? If so, where is the best place to source one from? Thanks! -
Daihatsu Sirion II (2005 - ) - TV advert finally! 18 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Having spoken to my local dealer, they said that Daihatsu didnt spend much on advertising here despite some good products that would sell better with better brand awareness but it would seem they have decided the Sirion is a potential money spinner as I just saw an advert for it, focus on the spec and cheap running costs. -

Cheap trolley jacks 7 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I bought one of these a few years ago, and it has worked OK, but now 'runs out of puff' once presented with a solid load, say more than 300kg. It doesn't appear to have leaked, but is it worth replacing the oil and, if so, with what? Or should I just bin it and buy another, in which case, are any better than any others? -
Noisy UK Motorways/A Roads 23 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Just returned from a small road trip to Italy and France and I had noticed that the car did seem to be running rather more quietly than usual. However on my return to the UK the noise was back again. Do other Euro countries use something different to surface their roads because the noise was caused quite simply by the road surfaces on our motorways and A roads? -

Defensive Driving Courses in Edinburgh/Lothians 21 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone know of organisations running defensive driving courses in the Edinburgh/Lothians region? I'm thinking of buying the missus one for her birthday, as she could do with some - ahem - "development" in areas of hazard perception, anticipation, etc. and generally protecting herself against the idiots who seem to flood the roads.
