Any - Caliper life, shortened by needless 'servicing' ? 19 Jan 2014 (Forum)
The inside of the cylinder will last longer if it is bathed in brake fluid, but until the pads and disc wear it will be more prone to corrosion. Discs have at least 2mm wear in them and pads many more. I believe it is important that pads and discs are allowed to wear right down to the minimum before they are changed to ensure the piston travels as far as possible along its cylinder. But I have often heard of people advised to change them 'cos they won't last till the next service, squire'. -

VW Passat 2008 - Key matching question on B6 3C2 16 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Hey guys, I have a 2008 PASSAT B6 1.9TDI (3C2) that I imported to Ireland from the UK recently. It only came with one key/fob so I'm thinking it would be much easier to get a spare now while I have the original key. I have VCDS(vagcom). Im guessing that this car has immobiliser IV. -
Audi A3 Sportback - New Car for Motorway Driving 7 Apr 2011 (Forum)
-Comfortable for long range driving (I do 200 mile round trips at least once a week) -Mainly for use on the motorway, so picking up speed between 50 and 80 is very important to me Those are my main concerns. Fuel economy is a bonus, but not essentail as I am fortunate enough to have a Fuel card. At the moment, I am thinking about a Audi A3 2.0 TDI, a VW Golf 2.0 TDI and a BMW 118d. -
Skoda Octavia - Salesman after me 20 May 2010 (Forum)
When I called him back he said I needed to come in to sign some more paperwork and 'go through some important things' related to FSA requirements and Insurance. As far as i'm concerned the car is mine taxed, insured and paid for - I can't think why they'd need me to come back in so urgently. -
Garage door - Automatic Roller door 14 May 2010 (Forum)
He thought it would come in "a million pieces" but the parts only consist of: the door, electric operator, 2 brackets and 2 metal guides and about 20 screws and bolts. Should I be safe and get a garage door dealer to install it? Is there anything important I should know? -
Police complaint - should I or shouldn't I 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
On top of that, it's recently been well publised that our blanket 20 mph speed limit is unenforceable and we must be revert to a 30 limit. So bad and dangerous parking is suddenly more important than it has been. I really struggled to exit onto the main road this morning as a result of the worst example of parking I've seen for a very long while. The car was parked across the mouth of the junction, more less at right angles to the pavement. -
Mitsubishi L200 pickups (2000 - 2006) - Type Approval - help needed 21 Feb 2009 (Forum)
s a 2.5 diesel and was first registered in February 2002. The chassis number, I am told, shows that it is not a ?grey import?. DVLA want evidence of ?Type Approval?. Mitsubishi in Ireland can supply me with Type Approval numbers for Emissions, Brakes and Noise, but not one number for the whole vehicle. After a lot of back and forth the local DVLA office are now saying I need to take it for an SVA test and, because it was not me who lived and used it in Ireland, some curt woman at VOSA says it has to have an SVA [enhanced] at the cost of £190. -
Speed Workshops 4 Feb 2009 (Forum)
She said that it was very imformative, they were shown video of a real car hits person accident at 35 mph and got the statistics stuff as normal. She said it was scary seeing it but makes sense why 30 is important around town. They also discussed the varying limits for different types of vehicles, how easy it is to creep over and how to manage your speed, the accuracy of your speedo etc etc. She said it wasnt in the least patronising and was happy that a portion of the money raised went to the air ambulance and courses for young drivers. -
Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - Micra engine lifespan? 2 Feb 2009 (Forum)
There have been a few fairly cheap examples with 50-90k on them but as a high percentage of micra owners will be OAPs and people who have never had a car serviced in their life because they have only done 4k of driving over the 3 years they've had it, the low mileage doesn't straight away strike me as the most important factor. On the other hand I've found one an hour's drive away with 1L, 120k on the clock, 2 previous owners & 12 months MOT. Is it likely to cover much more ground? Cheers, Tom -
Used car suggestions 5-6k 26 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Trying to stay away from common rail diesels, just seem too unreliable (and expensive), the current pug has apperently been very good for a common rail, Eek!. Anybody know of any other cars that might be worth consideration? Engine more important then brand/model. -
Best value used small car? 8 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Originally I was looking for a 1 year old vehicle so it was still in warranty and quite a bit of devaluation had come off, however perhaps warranty isn't important nowadays since cars are far more reliable than they used to be so a 4 to 5 year old might be best value? -
Decisions, decisions...Fiat Panda or Toyota Yaris? 30 Jan 2008 (Forum)
We're having our first baby in May, and are looking for a second car for Lucy to drive around while I'm at work. Lucy is a nervous driver, so size was important, basically, the smaller the better. We really want to buy from an Approved Used dealer, but this has drastically cut down our options, as the dealers don't like putting dodgy cars on their forecourts! -
Audi A6 + RS6 (1997 - 2004) - 2000 Quattro - Central Locking & Electric Windows 8 Dec 2007 (Forum)

More important, is this a known problem or failure, and is there a makers bulletin. Common engine to VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda and recovery mechanic said he'd never seen one Off I go................. -
Ford Focus Zetec vs Ghia - please help! 29 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Have seen loads now and it's come down to 2 alternatives: Focus Zetec, 2000, 2 prev owners (originally from NI, so sort of an import)), 60k miles, reasonable condition but with some rust on the inside, which worries me, £3900. or... Focus Ghia, metallic blue, 2001, 1 previous owner (big leasing company), 62k mileage, really good internal condition, £3850.
