• Broken down cars on the Hard Shoulder. 27 Dec 2007 (Forum)
passed a fiat sissyentro on the m1 today 300 yard before a service station on the hard shoulder, two people stood by the car,man near fencing safely, girl at back of nearside rear corner light not watching traffic but ringing the services on her blue screen mobile,i passed her in my recovery truck and at one time would have pulled up to offer assistance(i wouldnt now as i would probably be classed as some old perv) i hate to see people oblivious to fast moving traffic especially these days as i see so many people driving and texting ( my step daughters ex boyfriends best mate died while doing this so its a bit near the heart) anyway i passed and had to call into the services for an old mans needs, anyway i was in the truck having a coffee when said veeicle pulled in next to me closely followed by the 4th emergancy services,i spoke to the female about her use of the phone on the hard shoulder and how she could have been killed, she said it wont me want me i woz on the grass wont me,i explained again that she could have been my daughter and i was just trying to protect her life next time round, the 4th service provider said to me ,"youve made your point mate ,ive told her the same because i saw her too i drove on steaming..... would i ever tell anyone again in the same situation?............
• Don't judge a..... 27 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Further to recent conversations, just explaining my way of thinking really, and something that set it off. On discussing whether old or young drivers are the worst, my train of thought was how awful it is to generalise, and to put people in little boxes Young - all boy racers with no manners (not true) Elderly - all doddering (with no manners or thought for anyone else either) - not true You never know, one of those old geezers could be a former racing driver (even I know it's not all formula 1)etc. etc
• Unbeleivable car stories. 25 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Here's a starter. Guy at work a few years ago always would top anything you could tell him. We were talking about old cars that went on for ever. He says..."When I dug my patio round the back I went a bit mad and was short of hardcore to fill the hole. So I looked around and thought my old Viva wasn't used, put that in the hole and slabbed over it.
• Bought another cheapie. 8 Jul 2025 (Forum)
It even came complete with weird old pensioner steering wheel cover, an extra I love to see. The dealer has previously sold the car and has asked for its return when we no longer need it, promising a decent price or a commission sale on our behalf.
• Jaguar X-Type 2.0d 2004 182k miles - Annual Trip Report 2 Sep 2018 (Forum)
Some readers have expressed an interest in the progress of my old 'not really a Jag' and this is an update for them.  Others will scroll on by, no doubt.  I thought it might also br relevant to the 'running an old car' and 'when is it time to change?' debates.
• Mondeo Mk 4 - Accident, best way to claim from insurance? 14 Mar 2016 (Forum)
My car is drivable and I only want a courtesy car when the 2 affected panels are being repaired (wing bashed, front drivers door scraped). I have no real desire to line the pockets of a bunch of parasites who seem to be contributing to the ever increasing cost of insurance and just want the car repaired quickly and cheaply.
• Citroen C4 Coupe (2005) - Citroen C4 2005 - Known Issue? 19 Feb 2011 (Forum)
A week or so after the service I was out in the car and went to reverse to get out of a space when I heard a soft thud and the car stopped moving.  I then tried to put it in first and move forward and the engine just revved without moving anywhere.
• A new car for my Mother 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hi All, No not a swap?? My 75 year old mother wants a new car. Sadly she is insistent that is should be New rather than nearly new. Her current car is a W reg low spec petrol Golf (in white). She is able to get in and out no problem but she gives lifts to fellow retired teachers who are of more advanced ages so as time goes on something slightly higher would be better.
• Suzuki SX4 Roadtest 6 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Just got an SX4 for a loan car for the morning while my van is in for service, thought id pass on some initial impressions having just driven 15 miles in it. First thing I noticed is that the clutch is a bit spongey compared to my van, but my van is old tech so perhaps thats why.
• Good garages 14 Nov 2002 (Forum)
If i had not looked into this myself i could of had a bill for £800 for all new engine mounts!! 2. Also with my old car i had idle problem which was wrongly diagnosed as the idle stablising valve (cost £300) which turned out to be a worn throttle valve switch that was easily diagnosed with a multimeter. 3.

After the walk we visited the centre cafe for some well earned refreshment.  Queuing for some food and drink an old chap was paying for his food and using his card.  As so often happens with a card reader it fails to register first time.  The cafe assistant asked the old chap to tap it again.  Where upon he jabbed his index finger hard on the reader and their whole system when down from the card reader to the computerised food order system.

• Kwik fit do they deserve their bad reputation? 13 Aug 2018 (Forum)
First time was maybe 12 years ago when I had a puncture on a Sunday morning they repaird the puncture no problem but tried to convince me I needed new pads and discs on a car that wasn't 6 months old. I thanked  them for letting me know but declined their quote of £400. The second time was Sunday just gone. Same thing had a puncture and couldn't really wait untill Monday as I had to leave early to be somewhere.

Should have done something about this sooner. Too late for one sidelight, ...
• Vauxhall Astra J 1.7 cdti ecoflex - Dreadful fuel economy 4 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I had hoped to keep the car for another 150,000 miles, and at this rate it will be too dear! I had thought of chipping, but do not want performance, just economy, and no rise in insurance costs. I would be most grateful.
• Hyunai coupe 2002 2.7 V6 - keeps stalling soon after start up 22 May 2015 (Forum)
As Delphi are usually a good make, maybe Hyundai coupes are not good with aftermarket parts? Can't even put the old one back as it was so brittle it literally broke into bits in my hand as I was pulling it off. Any help would be nice thanks.
• Segregated parts - tin sheds - glass palaces 24 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I always think of the old Lada dealerships as an association with tin sheds. Or the old Skoda places, in the days of the rear wheel drive models. Locally, Toyota and VW have recently moved out of what seemed like the next step up from tin sheds - into new glass palaces.
• Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 Estates (1985 - 1996) - 89 2.3 Current leak 10 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The traction control is in fault and I have removed the controller; this makes no difference to the current draw. The cruise control hasn't worked for the last 10 years. The battery is 3 years old, Bosch Silver, but seems okay. The ignition coil is as 'old as the hills', but doesn't seem to be drawing large currents. Does anyone have some advice?
• Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 02 1.0 Service & Oil Change 11 May 2008 (Forum)
my sister has asked me to do a small service on her Micra. Its been ages since I did car mechanics; I will have to change my A/F spanners for Metric! As this is a favor, I don't want to shell out for a Haynes too. The oil filter I can see at the back at the engine (Not nice and easy like on my old minis).
