  • Vauxhall Astra H - Vauxhall 1.6 Ecotec engine failure 27 Feb 2015 (Forum)
In this case the "dephaser" on the inlet camshaft went on starting the car on the drive and that was the end of that, this after only being run a few hours earlier.  When severe and on it's way the engine sounds like a diesel running from cold, there are several example videos on Youtube (

  • Repair 01 Honda Civic or new family car???? - Family in Need of a Car 12 Dec 2014 (Forum)
2 Questions: 1) should we sell the car now or pay to fix these items with the hopes the car will run another 4-5 years.   "We buy any car"  said it would give us £600  in the online valuation.   2) what are good new/used car recommendations  (prefer an automatic, petrol,  family hatch or saloon) that is stylish, reliable, with reasonable repair and running costs.
  • Focus 2.0 TDci 2006 - High Miles Focus TDCi dilemma 24 Aug 2014 (Forum)
No idea how many MPG I'd get but I get around 55 in Focus.  So I guess my question is, will the Clio be cheaper to run for the next 1 - 2 years. Will it be reliable (or as reliable as a high mile Focus)? Would the Clio be cheaper to fix? Will it last doing over 500 miles a week.  Would  Money is the biggest issue, not speed or comfort.
  • Citroen C5 - Another "old age low mileage v young age high" 4 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Usual consensus is that a car with low miles over many years is likely to have had quite a hard life of short runs, stop starts etc, compared to one that has been on longer runs and higher mileage. Anyway, how about this one?  Looking at a 60-reg car, so late 2010, and it's already clocked up over 40,000 miles.
  • Ford Mondeo Mk1 1994 Petrol 1.8 - Ford Mondeo Mk1 Problem Starting 20 May 2014 (Forum)

  • Audi A4 Avant 2004 1.9TDI - Diisplay Errors: Date, Time & Outside Temp 9 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Car runs ok, and have yet to establish whether using the car normally will maintain the correct date & time. However, the outside temp is still wrong. All other parts of the display seem to work correctly.
  • Skoda Fabia vRS - Ideas for replacement for Skoda Fabia 1.4 VRS 9 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Been running a Skoda Fabia 1.4 VRS for 2.5 years now and we are looking to replace it in Spring 2014 when the lease runs out (its a company car). Have loved the effortless acceleration , the DSG gearbox and the fact it is small so great for driving round town.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C 2.2SRI 2006 - Advice 5 Aug 2013 (Forum)

  • Ford S-MAX - Heater Fan Speed 13 Jun 2013 (Forum)
The heater /aircon fan works fine when you set the temperature at 18 or above and regulates its speed according to the internal temperature required. However once set to 17 or 16 the fan runs at a constant 80-90% full speed. Not only is this very noisy but it means that it is not reacting to the temperature change in the car. Reverting to manual speed selection and it works at whatever setting you select.
  • 53reg mondeo 2.0 estate TDCi - Mondeo P0251 fault 9 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I've had starting difficulties for a long time, the engine cranks over and seems to fire on 2 or 3 cylinders with the orange management on, runs a few seconds and picks up to all firingon all 4 and the light goes out. once started it runs smoothly. yesterday I started it and although it stared as normal the light didn't go out. i started to drive (about 100 yards) and the engine cut out I restarted it and the same thing happened. after the fault was diagnosed I decided to check the fuel filter and on removing the pipe from filter to high pressure pump there was no fuel flowing even when the engine is being cranked over.
  • Vauxhall Astra - Alternator 'Ripple too big' and flat battery 5 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Hello, I am trying to get to the bottom of a problem I am having. Battery keeps running flat, its only a few months old so took it back to where I bought it and they did a voltmeter test (?) that showed that the battery was good and that the alternator voltage was good but it had a 'ripple too big'.
  • Honda Jazz - Honda Jazz 1.2 (Manual) Gear Problems 26 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Hi, The car is just over 3 years old and run about 20000 miles, I had it for about 11 months. I noticed a few problems: 1. Sometimes, the reverse gear won't go in, have to depressing the clutch again for it to go in, but it doesn't happen all the time.
  • 2005 vectra 3.0cdti - 2005 vauxhall vectra 3.0 cdti Sri diesel keeps cut 22 Feb 2013 (Forum)

Then I put the car into park mode turn the key a 3 or 4 times and way she goes with a few coughs then it seems to correct itself. Just gone out it in agin for a short trip and perfect not miss a beat.
  • Scottish Ferry Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) 26 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Whilst the HMRC's £8.70/day is comparable with RET's £9/journey, the RET rate/mile is out of all proportion to HMRC's rate/mile and equally out of proportion to the actual cost of running a car . In my book, the RET mileage rate is over 3 times the actual cost of running a car and still heavily penalises both locals and visitors and gives no encouragement to visit the islands for their economic benefit.
  • Kia Sportage 2006 CRDI - Odd coolant leak 15 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I've been keeping an eye on it and I've noticed the following: - The cap seems to work, as when you release it you get some pressure release (much less when fully cold) - When the engine is running and hot, I can't see any coolant leaking - An hour or so later, there is a little bit of coolant showing in the overflow pipe, and if you take off the expansion tank cap you can see coolant around the seal.
  • Peugeot 307 (90) Hdi - Peugeot 307Hdi (90) - Noises and a few faults.. 11 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Im not sure if its related but ever since i have had a noisy engine that kind of clears bang on 3000rpm, if it helps it sounds like when you run a petrol low on oil and you get that tappet ticking noise.  Also are the injectors coded on these engines?
  • vauxhall corsa sri - maf sensor 18 Aug 2012 (Forum)
it went back to the garage still coming up with sensor code, so tried another new sensor incase the first was faulty, code wiped etc but no change, sent to electrical engineers they ran through all they could think of, kept wiping the code and re running it, but it left them stumped !! now if you unplug the sensor it runs fine, and the only suggestion the garage has is to change the ecu, but i have read that it could be just a simple re earth of the sensor wire, however my garage are reluctant to do this in case they make things worse, but im not happy to pay out for a new ecu if it is just the earth wire, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, cheers
