  4 weeks ago it just wouldn't start. Its a push button start , and we tried both key fobs and changed the batteries in the fobs,  but no joy. Breakdown recovery checked the cars main battery which was fine, and tried a "reset" by disconecting the battery temporarily, but car still wouldn't start. All the dash lights come on, and the radio works etc, just no engine !

  Today I went to do some shopping, I drove around 8 miles in the the car, which has been running with no problems, apart from the odd intermittent electrical light (I think sensor fault maybe), however after stopping for around 10 minutes and returning to the car, the car wouldn't open with central locking, the car had no power what so ever and wouldn't start. I called out green flag who tried to get some charge into the battery under the bonnet ( due to is not being able to access the boot through central looking and no key access we couldn't access the main battery in the boot until he got some charge in to unlock the car) after this he charged the battery in the boot which started the car.

  However twice since changing the oil (twice in 3 weeks) the car has refused to start for no apparant reason. The battery, coil pack, HT leads are all healthy and it was getting a spark. I removed the air filter and turned the key for a constant 5 minutes (I am aware this is doing the starter and battery no good) and both timed it finally started after a loud of back fires and huge amounts of black smoke coming out the back.

  The car is mostly used for two, 10 or 15 minute runs in the morning and evening. The prime suspect is the starter motor?s solenoid or contacts. The battery (at least 2 years old) seems to be well charged; it operates the electric windows for example, with no sign of the sluggishness you might expect of a defective battery. The voltage starts at 12.6V, drops to about 12.2V on switching on the ignition and drops to 10.6V when turning the engine over; the intermittent fault vanishes as soon as you get the multi-meter out, of course.
