new driving article? 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I got this car for the AWD, if it did not have AWD I would have never looked at it, but would probably be driving an Audi now. I recently heard the AWD will be dropped in the '07 model year. This is a big mistake. The US customer is slowly going to tire of the SUV with its gas guzzling and safety issues, and be looking for a good alternative, the X-type Estate will be a good replacement for many, especially if it has AWD. -
BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - 325d SE Day 1 - Collection 29 Mar 2008 (Forum)
This will take a bit of getting used to after a lifetime of petrol engines, the last fifteen years of which have been with thermally efficient (but not particularly fuel efficient) Audis. I have given up on trying to get a parking heater fitted. I might as well have asked for dwarfs. I want some dwarfs in the back. Dwarfs, sir. They would look into that for you sir. And when they had looked into it they would tell you that it could be a little expensive sir because the exhaust would have to be re-routed. -
A week with an MG3 26 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Day 5: Queuing in traffic on the North Circular a dude in a beanie hat driving a new Audi A3 hoots at me from the next lane and signals for me to wind down my window. ‘I thought MG was gone?’ he shouts. ‘They’re back!’ I reply in a slightly-too-jaunty way. -
My first 6 weeks with a 520d 15 Jul 2012 (Forum)
Interior space up front is excellent and you sit quite low in the car, you feel very coc***ed. Quality of the trim is the best I have ever experienced and I have driven plenty of Audi/Mercs/BM’s before. The car has quite a long wheelbase which combined with an ‘average at best’ steering lock and thick pillars makes car parks sometime challenging. I am more than competent at driving (ex HGV1) but it is a large car with restricted vision in smaller spaces. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 105TDi - the first 30/90 (months/k miles) 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
- rear seats fold without having to remove headrests (MkIV hassle), but squabs are fixed, therefore floor not truly flat when folded - tailgate no longer lockable (questionable usefulness in a hatch) - the std semi-automatic aircon does as least a good a job of maintaining a steady interior temperature as the climate control units in the MKIV, ?S? reg Audi A4 and the LagunaII Tourer that I?ve had, so that was money well saved. (The ?97 Passat?s Climatic was pure set?n?forget though ? excellent) - the RDS Traffic announcements still work when listening to AM; the radio can be set to store the announcements so I can check the state of the M4 before joining it in morning and evening. - I? -
Roadtest : Avantime 20 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Well in terms of luxury I reckon it's up there with the Germans. In terms of engineering I think the Audis, BMWs and Mercedes of the world will always be very hard to surpass and Renault have realised this and so have attacked them on a style front and came up with a whole new type of car, the Designer Monobox Coupe Sports Greenhouse. -
RIP Diesel Hatchback 20 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I loved these especially the later post facelift cars with the smoother 1.9 motor and better interior. All drove well though. I know it’s not a hatch but these were great things. Audi A2 TDI - Way ahead of its time. Loads of room, well made, light, quite nimble, great on fuel and quite lusty. Often spotted with 200k plus at a daft overinflated price by sellers who think it’s a classic. -
Peugeot? Skoda? and others - Search for a car 1 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Standard Mk 5 1. 6 Golf (a benchmark to compare with the following) A3 2.0TFsi 5 door Skoda Octavia VRS 2.0 TFsi Audi A4 Volvo V50 estate We didn't test drive, I just wanted Mrs G to spend time with each to get a feel for her reaction to different types of cars, of course in this case all based upon same or similar mechanicals too. -
Subaru Forester - First 2 months and 2,000 miles of ownership 27 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I chose the car as it is large enough for my needs, has a decent petrol engine and Subarus get generally excellent ownership reviews. It also offered better value than the BMW, Mercs and Audis I considered and a 5 year warranty is also worth having. Subaru only do three trim levels in petrol, XC, XE and XT with a premium pack if you want leather and satnav. This model is the mid range XE model so is well equipped: Cruise control Reversing camera Electric drivers seat Dual climate Sunroof HID lighting Heated seats Auto lights and wipers Folding mirrors Bluetooth with voice activation USB, Aux and Bluetooth audio options And of course it has permanent 4WD. -
Transcontinental road trip 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Only open by prior appointment after 1 November, this is a popular venue for individuals and clubs in the summer but be sure to check their website http://www.offroadpark-langenaltheim.de as manufacturers such as Audi sometimes book the entire site for their prototype testing. Now we started climbing into the Alps toward Graz in Austria for our pre-arranged tour of the Mercedes-Benz G-wagen production line at the huge Magna Steyr assembly plant. -
Veg oil in your tank 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Salad oil apparently made th car slower in traffic and it was difficult to start and noisy - and when the driver and his photographer stopped the night near Barcelona they had awful trouble getting the car started in the morning (they eventually succeeded with a can of aerosol starting aid). Much as I hate paying taxes and love to beat the system, I hesitate to pour salad oil into my Audi TDI. I wonder if it might have the same effect as early city diesel, which had to have a lubricant added to stop it wrecking people's engines. It might be okay in a clapped-out '84 Golf, but would it be okay perhaps mixed with real diesel in a more valuable and modern car? -
Cyclist curfew 11 Jan 2013 (Forum)
I have never seen a cyclist with such an abundance of reflection. Or for that matter so much LED illumination this side of an Audi. He knew it was damned dangerous out there and didn’t mind as I waited a distance behind because of the bendy nature of the road. He checked where I was once or twice. No abuse, no hand gestures. -
[C]5 go on a trip........ 21 Mar 2002 (Forum)
However, it always seems to me that a car has a ?natural? motorway speed. My dodge seems to settle around 70 if I don?t pay attention, the Audi around 90 etc. Maybe it?s just me. However, the C5 seemed to want to settle around 68mph, and I had to keep focussing and driving faster, There is a very strange rushing noise from the windscreen wipers. -
Why did BMW buy Rover? 3 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Where companies have had successes in both of these market areas, they have achieved this with multiple brands, such as the VW Group’s use of Skoda at the lower end of the market, going through Seat and VW up to Audi at the premium end of the marketplace – as well as owning exclusive brands like Bentley. Ford now have multiple brands as part of their ‘Premier Automotive Group’ (Jaguar, Lincoln, Aston Martin, Volvo and Land Rover) and have all-but abandoned the high end of the market under the Ford badge.
