Diesel v petrol - nearly-new comparison 11 Mar 2008 (Forum)
There aren't any four-year old Versos to compare, but four-year-old RAV4s seem to show about a £1000 premium for diesel. So it looks as if a year-old petrol Verso might lose £5000 in the next three years, but a diesel one might lose £7000. So what am I missing? It's possible that the 1.8 engine isn't up to hauling a short but not small car, so I'll try one and find out. -
Towing - common fail D or petrol v costs 19 Jun 2007 (Forum)
OK, I know the obvious answer is a Diesel, but how many of us can afford to keep on buying new and ensure we get rid of the thing before the warranty expires, because that is the most cost effective, hassle-free way I can think of of driving a diesel as I do. -
Mazda CX-5 2018 diesel - White smoke problems 17 Jan 2024 (Forum)
It always stops when the engine starts to get warm and then it's totally fine. The smell is like a bad diesel smell, so I believe it is unburnt diesel fuel. This is the same pattern every time it happens. Only ever happens when the engine is cold and seems to be exacerbated when it's very cold outside. It does still happen in the summer months though. -
Long commute car suggestions ? 9 Nov 2010 (Forum)
So, I am looking for a replacement car, second hand, but only have 4-5k plus whatever I can get for the CR-V. I'm thinking that I should be looking at a diesel of some type ? But the only diesels I can see are way above my affordability, or have, what I think a lot of mileage - some of the diesels have around 100K on the clock - I dont know if this is a bad thing for diesels (I have heard that diesel engines are better with high mileage than petrol). -

Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.8 Advice/guidance needed on HUGE garage error 28 Sep 2009 (Forum)
They admitted they hadn't used the correct key/rod that you insert into the engine when changing belts over and the timing of the car had gone wrong, but would be put right at their own expense..... Now 2 weeks later the car still does not even turn over and they have told me the fuel pump is broken and I need to cough up £290 to repair it or £600 for a new one as they never touched the fuel pump so it's obviously my fault! But my argument is THEY are probably the ones who damaged it by running the car with an incorrectly timed engine thus chugging through too little or too much diesel? -
Volvo S60 (2010 - ) - Direct injection petrol engine - a good idea? 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Is Volvo serious about introducing this engine into the production version? Those figures are incredible, and must give diesel buyers something to think about, given that 119g/km has to be accompanied by mpg figures somewhere up towards the 50's, and on fuel that's still about 12p per litre cheaper. I have the prececessor to this car with an engine making the same power output but from 400cc more and with 100g of extra CO2 per km. -
Retrospective views road transport and Electricity 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
The current focus of adding bio fuels to regular fuel just seems so short sighted given the number of vehicles that need fueling. Once down the petroleum path, difficult to go back... But any comments or any other examples of where motoring and the road transport system could have been different to now? -

Fiat Panda Multijet 2006 - Suitable fault code reader 3 Jan 2013 (Forum)
On the 60's and 70's vehicles I was brought up on, the most complex electronic component was an SU fuel pump. But the need for fuel economy and the fact that all the old cars are worn out has forced us to buy a modern one. I realise that the cheaper a OBD reader is, the less it can do, but can I get something that will identify why an engine fault light has come on so I can at least have an idea of which sensor is sending the ecu an unexpected reading? -
Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 DT - Advice please!! 20 Nov 2012 (Forum)
So I own a Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9 DT 52Reg with 77000 on the clock, and a while ago started having this problem...the van surges as if there is a block in fuel, revs get up to 3500 in each gear but wont go any further. When pulling away in 1st gear it struggles for a while until the engines sort of ''kicks in''. Took it to the mechanic, had it tuned up and serviced, redex fuel treatment in diesel done, also the EGR valve was replaced as apparently was full of carbon.
