Lexus and cats 7 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I would like to buy an old Lexus LS400. What terrifies me is catalytic converters. I have never owned a car that had one and don't want to. I think that all Lexus's had them from new as standard even before the legislation that made them compulsory. -
Automec brake fluid 5 Feb 2001 (Forum)
Contacting stockists left me much less enthusiastic! Feedback ranged from "don't stock it anymore mate - no demand" to "it's allright for old cars but not so sure about moderns" - and they are selling it!! What's going on? Is it really OK to use on cars with ABS, ASP etc? I was intending to use it on our Rover 214 and Audi A8. Kind regards, Max Brown. -
Any - Would The Rust Fairy be A Felon? 6 May 2024 (Forum)
Suppose, hypothetically, that you had been passing a very scruffy old Datsun pickup truck parked in one of those soon-to-be developed areas where parking restrictions are not enforced, which tend to collect old and possibly abandoned vehicles. (I parked my truck somewhere like this near Kings Cross, but it was a well dodgy area even by London standards and was eventually vandalised and stolen) Suppose you rather liked those trucks and were saddened to see this one so neglected. -
Kia picanto - Is there a good reason for mileage discrepanc 26 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I'm looking for a first car for my 18 year old son and have seen a possible option in Cargiant. It's a 2018 model. However the HPI check shows a 380 mile reduction when it was a year old. It looks like the mileage was entered correctly, then increased for some reason on the same day and then changed back down two days later. -

Ford Focus - Worth bothering with annual service? 2 Oct 2021 (Forum)
I don't think skipping a service will make any difference to its value which will be very little now and usually when I've finished with my old cars I give them away. What would you do? -
still trying to crack the old chestnut 8 Oct 2019 (Forum)

Vauxhall corsa d - coil pack? 2 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I am just wondering whether, if its something else causing the issue, I might blow the new coil pack and be back to square one? I havent taken the old oack out yet. Not having access to a code reader or meter can I tell if the old pack is faulty - will it smell of burnt electrics? Any advice gratefully received, the new pack won't be here until next week. -
Aftermarket audio suggestions 14 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Tiny multi-function buttons, lurid displays that say "hello" in 37 languages, and "3D sonic loudness equalisation with active anti-distort mode PMPO enhancers" don't really cut the mustard now I'm not 9 years old any more. Any brand suggestions for something that won't look out of place in a 22 year old German car gratefully received. In aftermarket brand speak, I just need an RDS radio with: Directly Indexed Frequency Selector Switchpack ( a row of buttons that allow instant re-tuning to the selected radio station, numbered one to six for clarity) Integrated Rotational Power Moderator (a circular dial that controls the output volume by virtue of its rotation) Hardware-based Media Access Facilitation Device (a slot where CDs can be inserted when you want to play them.) -
Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - Seem to deteriorate quite badly after 6 or 7 years 3 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The Jazz recall thread prompted me to look at CarByCarBreakdown and I noted there's a comment: "Seem to deteriorate quite badly after 6 or 7 years." I'd be interested to know what that's based on? We just changed our 6yr old Jazz for a new one, but I did wonder if I'd done the right thing as the old one felt as though it would last for ever. The new one doesn't feel anything like as robust. I was slightly concerned that the gearbox was getting noisy, but within a couple of weeks of changing the car I saw a comment that Honda will now repair the box on any age Jazz, so I felt quite miffed about that! -
Toyota - VVTi engines & Oil consumption 12 Dec 2008 (Forum)
My old corolla has done 125,000 miles, doesn't seem to use any between services, same story with my 2.0i GT celica. Does anyone have any hard technical knowledge about what engines in which cars this affects ? -
astra to be kept to age 10 plus 28 May 2005 (Forum)
I was wondering though if there was anything else worth having done or if its a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"(gearbox oil? power steering fluid?). We intend to keep the car until its at least ten years old. Its never given problems so I hope to keep it that way- although as it ages there are no guarantees. Any advice on the worthwhile extent of preventative maintenance gratefully received. -

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate - Tyre dilemma 11 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Good morning fellow car nerds, and a very happy Wednesday to you all ! ;-) Looking for a bit of advice/direction/comment, if I may, on a small dilemma I'm wrestling with. I recently bought my old company car from my employers, and I plan to keep it, for a while anyway. -
C-Max - Engine Failure will follow 22 Jul 2013 (Forum)
Do I cut my losses and auction the car or sell for parts. Either way we are left in a position of having to buy a new car as it is needed for work journeys. Any advice would be appreciated - sorry I am not a mechanic just an average car owner who thought Ford was a solid relaible brand -
BMW 330i sport auto convertible 30 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Some may recall from a recent thread that I was thinking of buying a new freelander 2. The old L/R reliability problems still worry me (perhaps unfair) but I've now decided aginst it. I need to keep a practical car for the uni run & I am trying to persuade the wife to take over my estate car & sell her old Audi. -
Renault Clio II - Sold a "not fit for purpose" 16 year old clio 24 Sep 2014 (Forum)
When she bought the car she stated that she hadn't driven for a while as she was restricted due to medication but she couldn't do without a car so decided to stop taking the meds so she could drive, obviously against her gp's instructions.
