  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - Fuel Economy 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
It's a company car, and choosing this car was a delicate balance of what I could get for my money, test drives, economy, tax, looks, safety - and this beat off an Audi A4, BMW 320d and the Merc C200cdi. It was particularly close between this and the BMW - with the Beamers mpg approaching 60mpg nearly clinching the deal, but I was reassured by the Mondeo claims of 48, and figured in reality I'd be approaching 45 combined.
  • Goodwood Festival of Speed 19 Jul 2009 (Forum)
There was a line of beautiful vintage Bugattis, an Aston Martin Bulldog and a strange collection of mini specials. Rally cars being driven on their special forest stage included an Audi Quatro, mini, MkII Escort, Lancia Stratos and Skoda Estelle. There was almost too much to take in but the display by the Eurofighter Typhoon produced some lovely noises and appeared to defy the laws of physics.
  • Picking a new family estate 27 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Will do about 12k miles / year Short list so far: BMW E39 estate - both like the 3.0 engine (525 or 530), you pay a premium, but I guess you would probably get it back. Open to the idea of a petrol (post 2001 revisions) Audi A6 - when did they start going wrong? Friends have S2 / early S6 cars with the 2.2turbo engine, which appear to be hune from rock. All I read about later cars, be it 2.5Tdi's, or 2.0t engines, is that they are worth steering well clear of.

I would appreciate any advice, as this little economical car has cost me far more than my previous carlton estate and audi avant!!!! Cheers for your time ewen
  • Which car is a better bet? 6 Aug 2006 (Forum)
The cars I'm looking at are:- 1999 - 2000ish BMW 318 Ci Coupe - probs about 80K - 100K on the clock 2000 Mercedes C-Class C180 (Probably very high mileage, any model, but if it was a Classic it would have to have a few options on it) 2000 - 2001 Audi A4 saloon (high mileage again) My heart tells me that the one I want most is the Merc, but the problem is that there are *very* few available within my budget of £7K, they are almost all exclusively the old style one with only the odd Classic model new style thrown into the mix.
  • Why the huge jump in diesel performance 22 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Given the higher calorific value, how come technology hasn't been applied to petrol engines that have a zillion horsepower, collossol torque, low thermal losses, and run on half an egg cup of fuel per day? Sure, Mistubishi, Audi, and others seem to now dabble with high pressure direct injection, and we're starting to read about it with turbo engines too, but I can't see how a fuel, diesel, with low calorific value, can use those calories to vastly more efficient effect.
  • VW Inspection service lunacy 27 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Whilst on my high horse, I saw my first Phaeton (LHD, debadged (completely with neither marque nor model branding anwhere on the vehicle) and V6 (judging by the engine note)) on the road in Fulham yesterday, in solid (almost matt) dark green - did nothing to attract attention (admiring or otherwise) from anyone except the minicabber in his Hyundai XG - presume VW clinicked the Phaeton against its natural rivals then. It looked as memorable as the Audi V8.
  • Pierburg carbs and Golf Gti's 4 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Classic symptoms of carb icing as experienced on numerous similarly equipped VWs in the past (Mk1 Scirroco GLS, Mk1 Passat, Audi coupe gt5 carb etc etc)I plan first to try and eliminate this by just taping up the intake for cold air. But to add to the fun I find that the little green vacuum hose that feeds the green sphere has collapsed, what's this for?
  • BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - 25,000km report BMW 530d 9 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The ride quality on the runflats is not as good as the air suspension equipped Mercedes E320 a colleague has, but better than an Audi A6 or Lexus IS250 for example. At speed though, like the old one, it manages to be very quiet and relaxed and I drove 2,000km in 2 days last week without any adverse affects on my notoriously weak back.
  • BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - 325D Final installment 24 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Strange, if I knew how to make one of these things I'd put in a lot at the start. Poke around shelves in the garage. Find some Castrol Magnatec bought years ago for the Audi, never used. That car could not be persuaded to consume oil under any circumstances. Experience pangs of doubt. How long does this stuff last? Recall that it's been around for about 4 billion years.
  • EV versus PHEV 5 Oct 2020 (Forum)
As some of you know, I'm building a shortlist, in a fairly unhurried way, of possible replacements next spring for my Audi Q2 which will be three years old next April. (In answer to the reasonable suggestion 'keep the Q2 long-term' - I'm not convinced about the reliabilty of VAG cars over 3 years old, although it's been impeccable so far; and also it would be good to do one's bit for the environment, even if a very small bit.)
  • Telegraph Motoring Section 16 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Almost nothing in the reviews about reliability and issues concerning customer service with the brand; When car reviews (e.g. the recent Audi A8) are listed, and have a user comments section at the end of the article, any negative comments (however politely put) are either summarily removed or the whole comments ection deleted.  Some of the articles' authors have got quite shirty with people commenting and I suspect have been the cause of this.
  • VW Golf 2.0 TDI 2005 - VW Golf 2.0 TDI 2005 - sudden loss of power 26 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Interested in other experiences, advuce on next steps and guidance on what I could have shot at myself. Now the ironic part.  I have a Audi A3 Sport 2.0 TDI 2005.  It happened last week on that too. Thanks in advance.
  • Dealers fighting back against BER 22 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I wonder if these manufacturers and dealers realise that their cars only have relatively good residuals because of the fact that there is an efficient 'parallel' network of independent parts suppliers and repairers. Kill this off, and a secondhand Merc, Audi, or BMW becomes a much less attractive proposition.
  • Used family car - CX5? 3 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Not to keen on the tiguan / karoq / ateca trifecta. The Honda CRV has been discounted, and the newer RAV4 is out of budget I think. Audi Q5 would be nice, but examples at that price would be fairly high mileage also.  Have considered the BMW X1 , but seems expensive for the spec, and an X3 would be of more interest, but then it's an extra few years on the clock for the budget, and the maintenance cost (and insurance) sounds like a fairly big uptick from the CX5.
  • mazda 6 2.2 sport - madza 6 engine failure under warranty 30 Dec 2020 (Forum)
I hope someone out there will take mazda to court over this as for me I don't have the cash to risk on a big court case. Apparently this is not just a maxes problem plenty of Audi and Toyota landcrusers out there with similar problems too. I hope this helps explain the problem a bit more. i have rang mazda and they don't want to know about it, and the dealer ( not a mazda dealer) refuses to repair or refund me so if i go the legal route, i cant afford to lose. any advice.
  • Volkswagen - White smoke from oil filler cap and dipstick 20 May 2018 (Forum)
For months and months ive been looking for a new diesel car to replace my less than appealing 1999 VW Polo 1.9 TDI Estate.  I like Volkswagen Auto Group cars (Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda) and as such im trying to find something like a TDI Seat Leon or VW Golf. However after looking at multiple cars i keep getting the same thing which stops me from buying them, smoke from oil filler cap and/or oil dipstick.
  • any - another one of those 'which car' questions! 5 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Hi The wife's Mk1 Audi TT is starting to show its age (13 years, 100K) and things are starting to go wrong. We've decided to opt for a 'sensible' (i.e. safe, economical and unlikely to leave her stranded) wee car, either supermini or Focus size to replace it and we're looking at a budget of 5-6K and 6 years old.
  • any - driving in China 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
In a normal apartment block I was staying in on East Coast ,  I saw a new Rolls Royce Phantom and no end of latest BMW / Audi models - and these all cost double our prices there.   All cars , including MB ML,  Landcruisers , Q7,  S class , X5 ,  running on unleaded at about 80p  a litre   ( no cars ran on diesel at all )   Driving standards are bad.
  • Your thoughts on my possible car change 10 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Jaguar XF 2.7 prem.lux - or could stretch to the 3.0D prem.Lux with less than 30k clocked.late 2009 reg probably. This is the one I tend towards as my previous 3 cars have all been Jag XJ's. Audi A4 or A6 but, apart from the 3.0D, they appear to be slower than the above and slower than my current XJ BMW 3 series or 5 series.Seeem to have a good name but, well, they are rather boring looking machines and the Run Flats are of no use to me as, when home, my nearest Big tyre fitter is 87miles away from my front door.
