  • Unintentional Acceleration Syndrome 6 Jun 2001 (Forum)
In David Lacey's letter under the very long thread which becomes 'Psychology of the Smell' he mentions drivers of automatics confusing the brake pedal with the accelerator. This crops up in my snail-mail bag on a regular basis. Someone has just had a crash in their automatic which "ran away with them" and they want support from me to blame the car.

  • Citroen C2 (2003 - ) - yr 2003 - VTR - semi automatic gearbox Problems 20 Aug 2015 (Forum)
My son has a 2003 C2 VTR (semi-automatic gearbox). It has developed an odd problem where it jams in 5th gear and hence cannot be driven. To recover it is necessary to disconnect the battery, short out the positive connector (apparantly to reset the management system) and then reconnect.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol - Astra automatic is stalling 9 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Our V reg 1999 Astra automatic has been fantastically reliable.  It has now done approx 79,000 miles.  From Oct  2011 we switched to using "super" unleaded only.  Since then on 4 occasions the car stalled when approaching a junction.
  • Small/medium automatic needed 18 Jan 2009 (Forum)
A work colleague is looking for a small to medium sized automatic. His wife has MS so needs the auto for her occasional use and the car will do at most 5,000 miles pa and probably less, with most journeys being about 3.5 miles each way to the office. He wants a small to medium sized car costing no more that £4,000 and probably no more than five years old.

  • Pug 508 - Automatic Gearbox advice 9 Oct 2022 (Forum)
Hello any automatic gearbox experts. Can someone please explain the connection between brakes and automatic gearboxes. I have a 6 speed Aisin box and I’m getting a jolt. It seems to me that if I have had my foot on the brake whilst say at a junction in D when I take my foot off the brake the car jolts forward.
  • Honda Jazz - Wife needs reliable, economical automatic car! 1 Feb 2020 (Forum)
The words reliable and automatic seem to be at odds in the new modern gearboxes, hence why I would like to chose this car carefully. I am no automatic gearbox wizard but from what I understand generally.. Torque Converter gearboxes are the most reliable and least economical.
  • Best small but powerful automatic with extras?? 11 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I currently drive a Mazda 3 sports nav 2.2 litre diesel. I love the car, but want something smaller and automatic. I would have switched to Mazda 2, but can’t get the combination of engine and extras I’m after (I’ve got used to them all now!!!) So... any ideas on a Mazda 2 sized car that has an automatic transmission that still packs some punch, but also has rear parking camera, heated seats, sat nav, electric rear windows?

However it is becoming old and unreliable in other ways and we gave been offered a 2009 Honda Jazz automatic by a family member. I am nervous as I don't know how I would handle this in the snow on our hills. I would appreciate any advice as to whether this would be a wise move & whether I can change up & down gears or use the engine to brake at all in an automatic?

  • Diesel Automatic Fuel Economy 8 Apr 2003 (Forum)
There is a thread in 'Discussion' asking advice about diesel automatics. Somebody wrote: "In theory diesel engines should be better suited to automatic boxes than petrol, because of the way they deliver power and torque." I would also have thought that high torque at low revs - like the big lazy V8s in American cars - would be ideal.
