secret squirrel police cars? 1 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I currently work in Oxford /live in london that means my commute regularly sees me 'observing the speed limit' down the M4 / M3 what did I see heading westwards on the M3 thursday 3 ugly brown audi's (looked like A2's) all new, all with some type of strobe mini light stack on their roof's, all doing well over the ton and racing in convoy. then I remembered last month on the M4 seeing the EXACT same hue on 4 volvo C class estates (with the same type of light stack) again heading westwards. -
BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - New 5 Series Touring: green as colour choice? 22 Aug 2007 (Forum)
When it comes to colour choice, black or some sort of metallic silver, grey or blue seems the obvious default choice from the somewhat limited BMW palate (compare with Audi or Volvo) - it's what everyone else has after all. But the other half quite fancies deep green, having decided that all these, together with gold, burgundy et al were definitely out. I quite liked black but decided it liked to much like a hearse in SE mode so I had settled on silver but am being told I should open my mind and buck the trend, and, besides, it will match her green Mk1 MX-5 on the drive. -
Total loss valuation 20 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Also, any ideas of what to replace it with, (I need an estate preferably)? Would you go new or say 18 months old? Audi, BMW, Subaru (no diesel version I know). -
£1,500 buying decision 23 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I'm currently considering the last shape Honda Prelude, the Fiat Coupe (non-turbo - but still scared by possible unreliability), the Audi Coupe (possibly early 20v or late V6) and maybe the Nissan 200sx (though they seem to be too much in demand among boy racers). Another consideration is that my wife is likely to be driving when she passes her test, and she's only 5' 3" - so she needs to be able to reach the pedals. -
Knackerd steering due to humps 26 Nov 2006 (Forum)
What we have noticed with the cars is that due to poor roads in Southern England and Thailand and also road calming measures , we have had to have the sterring and front suspension arms and bushes replaced about every 60,000miles , this never used to be my experience , in years past it was rare to have to change out these item so often, average cost about £600.00 Another stealth tax job creation scheme. My Nissan in Thailand is an excellent car but lacks the dynamics of a SAAB or Audi, the Isuzu pickup has now reached 250,000 miles on original engine and gearbox, superb machine tough as old boots on or off road. My dads SAAB 900 V6 is 10 years old but superb, a minter, it will run for 20years. -
Old large diesel estate 11 Oct 2006 (Forum)
What I want is a large and by large I mean Volvo sized, estate which is also fairly economical ( hence the diesel idea ) which will also be durable and reliable as far as you can with old cars. My shortlist is Vauxhall Carlton 2.3D, Audi 100 Avant, Volvo 740 TD, Peugeot 505 2.5D and the Ford Granada 2.5D. Im not keen on turbo cars really as at the age Im looking at, its likely to be knackered, so id prefer one of the non-turbo options as a preference. -
Volvo V70 TDi classic - opinions ? 11 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I am considering buying an old shape volvo V70 with a TDi engine - I understand it is an Audi 5 cylinder design. Can anyone give me their experiences with these cars, both good and bad ? I have noticed that most of these cars for sale have very high mileages ~100K+ Do these cars still have plenty of life left in them, or will they become complete money-pits.....? -

Channel 5 Autobahn programme 6 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I loved the bit about it being illegal to flash drivers from behind to get them to move over and that you were 'expected/obliged' to get out of the way for any car approaching from behind that carried a BMW, Audi, Mercedes or VW badge - funny they didn't mention Porche, unless I missed it. They don't seem to have jam problems as when busy the hard shoulder is made available as an extra lane and in practice works. -
Car Mag Selections of Group Test Cars 3 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It has a diesel engine widely praised and size / price-wise it should be up against 3 series BMW / C Class Merc / Audi A4 / Jag X-Type. But when we see group tests they only have the four cars above. Surely it would be good to see the SAAB 9-3, Alfa 156, Honda Accord, even high specced Mondeo's for example thrown into the mix. -
A convoy of BMW 1 Series 22 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Not quite as Alfa 147 from the back as I first thought, either. Definitely more distinctive than the Audi A3 (I won't even dignify the looks of the Golf by comparing it here). I guess I wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen in one after all! PS I thought about putting this in the Unusual Sightings thread, but I reckon these are going to become a very common sight indeed. -- andymc -
small claims court. lost £1000 deposit 28 May 2004 (Forum)
got a really nice phoncall 2day from Audi where would you like your £1000 cheque sent. i couldnt believe my ears, so i told them to bring it round to the house hand delivered before weds night 5pm, as i would be posting the witness statements and other assoisiated documents and a copy of the unfair terms 1999, to them and to the court manager, after this time. the docs needed to be in before 28th May. -
Car for heavy towing 17 Mar 2004 (Forum)
So I want a used car a transfer box - preferably not a heavy 4*4 again. The choice seems to be a Subaru or Audi Allroad (too expensive). BUT - these cars don't have the low gearing I need. The following are the reduction ratios for two 'heavy' 4*4's and the Subaru, multiplied together to the 'TOTAL' number. -

sporty 5 door for sporty family 13 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I have three children and it seems nigh on impossible to find a new/used or classic car which looks really sporty, goes fast, has 5 doors and is NOT and estate( My wife wont drive an estate..must be her caribbean background ) So far we have tried :- Seat Leon Cupra: Likes: fast, roomy, reasonable price, looks great in yellow, airbag deactivation Dislikes: Would have to be clean to look good, depreciation Audi A3 1.8T: Likes: fast, beautifully made, airbag deactivation Dislikes: a bit small,VERY expensive(even 2nd hand) VW Golf 1.8T and 130BHP TDi: Likes: fast, efficient(Tdi),roomy, reliable Dislikes: A but plain(unless someone can suggest a really good body kit),a lot of them around, have too add extra airbag deactivation kit We have also tried the basic 206 but found it a bit plasticky We have also thought about the mazda 323 1.8 or 2.0 sports and toyota corolla T3 but have not tried them We have also not tried any classic cars yet because of fears on reliability H..E..L..P -
Insurance - to claim or not 13 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Regular Backroomers may remember that a couple of weeks ago my Audi Coupe 20V was sideswiped by an unknown vehicle which, despite my best efforts, I have been unable to trace. It now has a deep scrape along most of the drivers side, which has dented the metal. As it stands now, the car is probably not worth very much. -
Golf mk3 cuts out after going through puddles 5 Mar 2002 (Forum)
It's not the leads (replaced) or dist. cap as far as I (or the garage) can tell. I thought perhaps a short in the fuel pump (happened to my Dad's Audi once), but the pump is mounted on top of the tank, and I can't see how it could get wet. The garage replaced an engine management control switch, and tidied up some frayed wiring, but that didn't work. -
Insurance warranties 8 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Hi, this is the gist of a Q I posed to HJ who suggested that I pose it in the Backroom : I've had quotes from Warranty Wise and Drive Assured (Warranty Holdings, part of Ford), both found via links from autotrader.co.uk, for my May 1991 registered Audi 100 Avant 2.2L petrol Turbo (seems like a very rare combination of engine & body). These are the only ones prepared to quote on a vehicle of its age & mileage (112K). The Warranty Wise looks how I'd expect it to with specified components (& covers what I need) but the Drive Assured (Warranty Holdings) seems too good to be true - only normal wear & tear items are excluded. -
Past quality 8 Feb 2022 (Forum)
For me it’s the following. Audi - 1992 Audi 100 2.3E - Solid and dependable, these were a high quality vehicle and while nowhere near as enjoyable on the twists as a BM 5 series they felt like they’d outlast the next ice age. -

I am now on the market to buy a budget car. Hopefully in the £2500 range and I will be commuting about 2500 miles per month.
