Any - Does Start/Stop Technology Really Save any Money? 23 Jun 2014 (Forum)
(C) Are the more robust starter ring, starter motor, larger capacity battery systems and associated monitoring systems as reliable and trouble free as the conventional arrangement, where you can always simply choose to 'turn off your engine' for as long as necessary if 'stuck' in a motorway traffic jam etc. -
Electric & Hybrid Cars 12 May 2012 (Forum)
It was interesting to hear the difference in the sales pitch between the hybrid manufacturers and the electric only, with the hybrid claiming that their batteries would last longer since they were only charged by the petrol / diesel engine and you couldn't abuse the battery by fast recharging from the mains. For the electric only cars, I found the whole concept of recharging interesting. -
Honda Civic 2017 - Warning Lights Pinging on Startup 31 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Without a 100% guarantee of success this is obviously out of the question, Looking on the internet for similar issues some people suggest that it could be battery related (the car is still on its original battery) or possibly down to the alternator. I wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar. I am quite happy to carry on using it as it drives like a new car but there could be an issue with getting it through the MOT test later in the year. -
Any - Poor breakdown service - Missing the obvious 4 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Some readers will be ahead of me here but the "knocking" would slightly better be described as "clicking". Classic signs of a simple flat battery and relays not holding. A typical breakdown service driveway job if ever there was one. Rather than call out a garage at our expense (if I could find one on a Saturday) and possibly not achieve a fix before tomorrow's sale, I dug out the charger and gave it an hour. -
Ford fiesta - Car struggling to drive ABS light on 21 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Is it possible that the 6 weeks of inactivity meant the handbrake has jammed or perhaps I installed the battery wrong and the computer has been fried? Any suggestions at all would be appreciated before I can get it looked at by a mechanic next week. Thanks in advance -
Ford Focus - Ford Focus intermittent electrical failure 14 Feb 2015 (Forum)
When I tried the ignition it started and ran fine and everything worked. REALLY STRANGE! I do think the battery is old and tired. I'm suspecting a connection, battery or alternator fault or short circuit, but the fact that it spontaneously cleared in inconsistent with anything I can think or, unless there is some form of self resetting trip switch? -
Mercedes Sprinter - New vehicle not so new, legal advice please. 5 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I love the motorhome but worry about the fact that it's been standing around somewhere for two years. I'm concerned about the tyres, the vehicle battery and the three leisure batteries and of course the fact that I've got a vehicle that was over three years old when I collected it. What are my legal rights? -
Mazda 6 - Passenger air bag deactivated 11 Jan 2012 (Forum)
May I also ask, when working at parts of the airbag system i.e. disconnecting and reconnecting plugs under the seat to check they are fitted and not loose and also then using a multimeter to check resistance, I would first need to disconnect the battery completely and let it sit for approx 20 minutes, is that correct? Just I would not want to activate any airbags while checking plugs / readings etc. My next question is whether disconnecting the battery and effectively discharging the system in doing so, will “upset” (if that’s the correct terminology) any of the other parts of the cars electronics? -
Rover 45 2003 1.4 - Am I being ripped off 3 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I picked the car up at 11am, was told that he'd had to jump start it that morning but the drive home would charge it. Got home car would not start.. Jump started vehicle to go buy new battery. Mechanic who was going to fit battery said there was nothing wrong with it. Contacted garage and told them this, was instructed to return vehicle and they would fit a new engine. Four days later engine had been returned to breakers yard where it had been purchased and they would check it. -

1.4tdci diesel - Urgent advice on buying a car needed... 29 Jul 2010 (Forum)
I had a friend come round who works in a garage and he checked everything mechanically, and noticed a new battery, electric wires exposed with no covering going into battery ( not frayed or anything, just no plastic heatproof covering that you would expect). I have done an HPI check and it cam back clear. -
Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 97 1.0 Engine flooded and rough idle 30 Dec 2009 (Forum)
The week before xmas, on the first day of snow it wouldn't start, wouldn't even turn over. Got the rescue out and he said the battery was dead and advised a new one. Had a new battery fitted and took it for a run to make sure it was fully charged but due to severe ice on the hill up to the main road I didn't take it out again for over a week, but turned the engine over a couple of tiimes. -
Young at heart 22 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I live in a garage, which I share with some bloke who keeps his lawnmower in there and sometimes plays Jazz Record Requests too loud. But he does keep me clean and makes sure my battery voltage is correct. As a lady I love new things but I can?t persuade anyone to get me a new battery because my original one works fine. I just love it when he switches on the garage compressor because he then messes about with my wheely bits. -
Mazda MX5 (1989 - 1998) - 92 1.6 engine dies when de-clutched 11 Nov 2008 (Forum)
However, a problem has arisen in that recently the engine cuts out when it is de-clutched and twice it would not immediately restart. It seemed as if the battery was flat and would not turn the engine over. If left for 30-40 minutes it restarts ok. I took the car back to the garage that did the cam belt, they did not think it was related to the engine cutting out and suggested replacing the spark plugs and HT leads which was done. -
Car replacement/MOT problem 13 May 2007 (Forum)
1995 N Ford Escort 1.6 LX silver, 96k, full service history last serviced 300 miles ago, worked fine until my dad had to stop driving since an accident but now it won't start, the battery is had it but it won't start with another battery either. Its probably just damp ignition compoments or somthing. 1995 N Fiesta Classic 1.1, 103k, only one service invoice, body work in good condition for age, 1 months MOT, 3 months tax, drives perfectly, camshaft noisy and burns oil. -
Peugeot/Citroen TD / XUD starter 10 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Do up the top two bolts together, and then the lower bolt. Reconnect the two wires on the starter, replace the air filter box and pipes, and reconnect the battery. Job done. Should take about an hour to an hour an a quarter if you are a novice like me. -
Mondeo Diesel run dry 17 Sep 2006 (Forum)
A neighbour has parked a car facing uphill with 5 litres in the tank. Tried to start car but would not start , ran battery flat, then asked me for help. I deduced the problem was probably the incline and told him to go on the main road on the flat where we tried to start it again we had one spark of life from the engine then nothing. -
Any - Listening to the radio while parked 28 Aug 2024 (Forum)
If the car is put into Ready To Drive mode, the radio will stay on, with the engine firing up occasionally to keep the batteries charged up. I hate supermarkets and prefer to stay in the car while my wife gets the shopping. Does anyone have a way around this, and do pure EVs behave in the same way? -
Audi e-tron - Audi E Tron time to change? 26 Feb 2024 (Forum)
I know the 3 yr warranty will be up (same on all cars) although I have read you get an 8yr or 100k battery warranty? Is this subject to Audi dealer history etc? Any advice would be welcome? -
Qashqai - Qashqai 1st Gen---faults and reliability? 14 Dec 2021 (Forum)
Hi all Family member is thinking of getting a Qashqai, and I've heard pretty bad things about them so far. For example, batteries dying prematurely, apparently having the highest breakdown rate of all vehicles in the UK (thisismoney article), suspension problems, premature timing belt failure, windscreen leak---leading to water ingress, front suspension lower ball joints not seating correctly, power steering and rack/pinion problems, etc.
