  • Growly noises 24 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Newer cars seem less memorable - perhaps you can think of more recent sounds. The Subaru flat-four perhaps.
  • Joke exhaust whistles 1 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Anyone else used one for a practical joke ? Fitted one to my mates car the other day. He drives out of work with his car sounding like an old style kettle !!! The 30 mile journey back to Bishop Auckland must have seemed like an eternity. Funny thing was he rang his mate who was a mechanic and described the symptoms.
  • Which MPV? 30 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Does anyone have experience of either car, or any pointers to help me decide?
  • Leon 1.8 cam belt snapping 23 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Some help for a car buying novice please!! I read elsewhere on this site that one of the bad points to buying a Leon 1.8 20v SE is that the cam belt is prone to snapping between 70k and 80k miles. Is this just rectifiable by putting a new one on or is the snapping problem related to more than just an old cam belt?
  • Distributor cap protection? 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I've changed the cap and I'm now looking to waterproof it. HJ mentions a special sleeve but initial inquiries have turned up nowt. It's so old now (the car not the Girlf) that I doubt I'll find one. The bloke in the local car parts place gave me a rubber glove of the type surgeons and customs officers wear - any good? Any views welcome.
  • Mondeo cambelt change 9 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Can anyone confirm the correct cambelt change interval for our Mondeo (2.0 Zetec LX Auto 1/97 facelift model). Car is just coming up to 6 years old with a confirmed 60,000m. Local Ford dealer says 5 years/80,000m Service book supplied says 10 years/80,000m My friendly local garage reckons it should be done now.
  • Thanks, but no thanks 26 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I had a trip around MG dealers today, with a view to buying an MGZT. I offered my 18 month old Passat 1.8T SE as P/X. Offers made varied between £9-11000. This on a car that was on VW Forecourts for £14995 six months ago. (Thankfully I got it quite a bit cheaper-the power of the internet.) I chose the VW because all the motoring press suggested it held its value better than any other car in this segment.
  • power steering 7 Mar 2002 (Forum)
For your information, some three weeks ago a thread mentioned a Forte Power Steering Enhancer formulation that you need only pour into the reservoir. The car is a 1989 Volvo 740 at 98K miles, the power steering was very stiff at low speed and non existent on start. Following advice from Forte, I drained the old fluid out and replenished with new plus the enhancer.
  • Buying a car without V5C 4 May 2021 (Forum)
I happen to visit a car supermarket who stock hundreds of car. I was interested in one car, they told me it did n't have a V5C logbook. They told me, I would need to apply for a V62.  It is is a 3 year old car, with 39,000 on the clock.
  • Jaguar XF - Reliability & Smoothness of 4cyl petrol '18 Jag XF 26 Apr 2021 (Forum)
I've owned my 2009 XF 2.7D Premium Luxury since nearly new and have enjoyed totally trouble free motoring. However, I'm aware the car is getting on now, so I'm considering it changing it, either for a 2014 / 2015 last of the old shape XF 3.0D 240bhp / 275bhp S or a 2018 new shape XF 2.0 Petrol 25t 250 bhp. I have no doubt that the 2014 / 2015 will be far superior to my old 2.7D but I'd be very interested to hear from anyone with experience of the petrol new shape XF.
  • BMW 120i Sport auto 2015 - Electrical glitches 24 Jan 2019 (Forum)
All functions were restored on replacing the battery on my 320d. However, the 320d was 6 years old with 120k on the clock before I began to notice signs of battery failure so I wouldn’t expect this with my current 3 year old/35k car Any thoughts on where these electrical issues may lie?
  • Hyundai i20 - i20 Clutch Fail! 8 Sep 2015 (Forum)
The dealer now wants me to authorise £450 odd worth of work to take the gearbox and clutch out and replace if necessary. Same old story, I've driven cars for 10 years, with many more miles on the clock than this, without any clutch issues. I don't ride the clutch and I always use the handbreak (i.e. I don't hold the car on the clutch on hills/at junctions).
  • any - funny prang 30 May 2011 (Forum)
I said to him 'I saw everything '  , he then proceeds to chat with the driver of the car, a totally battered white P reg Honda.  She eventually emerges -  lady is at least 90 y.o , If I'd been 5 metres further, she's have crushed me against the Maser   Now, not really relevant , but a backdrop  :  Both drivers Jewish , and to our astonishment , the old bat wags her finger and croaks '  It's your fault !!
  • Signum Rambles on...... 15 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Goodness me what a difference. A marginally harder ride but so much more direct in feel. Admittedly the old ones were pretty shot but were just still legal so perhaps any new tyres would have been an improvement. The best bit is that they are a VX approved "straight swop" and require no modification to the car.
  • Honda Accord Tourer - Views 26 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Well I decided the old Civic was getting a bit long in the tooth at seven years old and a bit boring so after a month or so of consideration and checking prices, I went out to the local Honda Main Dealer on Friday and bought a 2.4 EX Honda Accord Tourer . 04 plate. one owner car, 24 k miles ie barely run in for around half the new price .
  • Door - easy job?? 26 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Hiya... As described in two very long and old threads ('think I've seen the last of my car' 1 and 2), I've had my polo back for about 6 weeks now. Initially (3rd time I rejected it) the driver's door hadn't been refitted properly so it wouldn't always open from the inside and was chipping away paint in the bottom corner of the frame.
  • 14,000 miles. Diesel BMW Oil Change ??? 24 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have recently bought a 15 month old BMW 330D. (36,000 motorway miles) I have noted that according to the service book the car has had oil changes every 14,000 miles... Being of the old school with regards to changing engine oil I immediately contacted several BMW main dealers..They all assured me it was ok to leave the servicing so long as they use \"special longlife Castrol SLX oil\"..
  • Bullying Fiat into a fix 24 Apr 2003 (Forum)
So I insist that this man from Fiat sees the car and book an appointment for when he next visits. Go home and check small print of warranty - which does indeed say body panels - what a cop out! Phone trading standards for advice - they say that my contract is with the dealer and they agree that a 2 year old car should not be showing such signs of corrosion.
  • Bang! 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
So presumably an insurance claim won't cost me the NCD on my policy. Question - if rear-hinged doors were outlawed years ago, why are car makers still allowed to fit rear hinged bonnets? If my mother's old car had been a Renault, this would never have happened. Richard Hall http://bangernomics.tripod.com
  • Cash allowance + vehicle age policy = confusion 7 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Dear HJ friends, I'd welcome some help from the community in navigating my first vehicle purchase, (I've owned a few cars, but feel this is my first serious consideration on car choice, read on to find out why...) I've just changed employment with a promotion, and I get a cash car allowance with my role - but they have a policy that stipulates that in order to receive it, my car must be under 6 years old.
