  • 206 v Punto 12 Oct 2006 (Forum)
My housemate has recently decided she wants a car. Unusually for a lady, she know's cars by name, and has decided that for her budget of £2,500 she'd probably like to purchase either a Pug 206 or FIAT Punto, circa 2000/2001. This decision has been based upon her budget and the look of cars in her budget.
  • Laying up car for 6 months 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
You may have read my other post re: buying an Audi A4. We have decided to keep my girlfriends old car and store it in a garage for 6 months for my brother to learn to drive in. Question is should I be doing anything special for this short space of time. WIll hook the battery up to a trickle charger and leave the handbrake off so hopefully no battery and brake issues when it is to be used again.
  • Longlife servicing 17 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I have a Passat that is on the long life service. Why is their so much conflicting information as to when the best time to change the oil/get the car serviced. My car is 1 year and 3 months (13000 miles) old and I have no intention unless I get good reason to change it back to a yearly/10000 mile. It seems to me that everybody is so used to yearly/10000 miles service that they do not want to change away from this.
  • Clio starting 24 May 2005 (Forum)
Help is needed here Got an old shape 98 1.2 clio that has developed a funny starting problem If you drive somewhere and come back to the car when the car is still warm the car can take a long time to start All other times it starts first time Checked all connections and i don't think it is the immobiliser as it starts all other times no problems.
  • Suzuki Wagon R+ 21 Sep 2004 (Forum)
We have seen a couple of examples, about 2 or 3 years old with less than 15,000 miles. Seems to well well looked after. I know its not a great car to drive. Mainly interested in convenience for an older driver and reliability. Any thoughts/experiences?
  • Alcohol fuelled internal combustion engi 26 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I am in the process of rebuilding a 100 year old stationary (car link - M25 this morning at J23!) engine which I was originally designed to run on alcohol. I can find a google of sites extolling virtues of ethanol or methanol mixes for car engines but no references on use of pure e or m as a single fuel.
  • Wet Footwells - Mondeo 9 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I have a Mondeo Ghia estate, one of the last old shape versions (2000-X). I lifted the floor mat on the drivers side of the car to discover that the carpet is saturated. It only appears to be the footwell that is affected; there is no sign of water or damp on the sides of the footwell.
  • Help - What Car? 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I thought buying a car would be fun, i\'m just frustrated and fed up. I was going to buy a 4x4, (easy now people, calm down, deep breaths) but due to the extorniate running costs, i\'ve got in narrowed down to... VW Golf MKIV Audi A3 (Old Shape) I need 5 doors.
  • Air con 15 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The lady wants a decent second-hand car and has decided she wants air con. We are looking at something about two or three years old, either Ford, Rover, VW or Japanese. We've had all these different makes in the past and have been pleased with them.
  • Brand Loyalty 30 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The 'Brand Loyalty' displayed by car owners is staggering. In the past most British manufacturers went through periods of producing awful cars and yet owners went back time and time again to trade in their old model. There is much the same syndrome displayed in the Backroom.
  • MUM TOT-WIRES HER CAR!! 5 Dec 2002 (Forum)
See www.sky.com/skynews/article/o,,30100-1218130,00.html This Article reported on the skynews website tells the story of how a RAC patrol went to help a mother who's Ford Focus wouldn't start, The patrol noticed that the immobilser chip was missing from the ignition key. Apparantly the Mother remembered that her 1Year old had been playing with the key, and had had at one point the key in his mouth. As a long shot the patrol asked the mother to place the child as close to the steering column as possible and BINGO the car started first time.
  • Skoda Octavia Hatchback - Is there such a thing as an SUV for SPORTS? 12 Mar 2015 (Forum)
I've got a 5 year old Skoda Octavia L&K 2.0D DSG Auto, which replaced a similar 4 year old car. It easily fits two full sets of golf clubs, plus electric trolleys, shoes, and even a couple of weekend bags, IN THE BOOT completely hidden from sight.
  • Please help with a car decision 19 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Well after 10 years with my lovely Micra now need to buy a new car. Sadly I wrote off my beloved 11-year-old Micra. So I am now looking for a replacement. I realise that what is important to me is a car that will last a long time so I don't have to replace it for a while, I don't really enjoy car shopping.
  • Any economists out there?! 26 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Are we moving or have we moved to a situation where there is such a glut of oversupply that no one wants an older than 7 yr old car and there are not enough bangernomics people to pick up the perfectly useable cars remaining thereby confining then to scrap heap or encouraging even more cars onto the roads as 3rd and 4th cars.

  • The early days of motor racing 26 Dec 2022 (Forum)
v=EAy2LVzQoCs&t=77s"> Just watched this film I came across on YouTube. Just over 30 minutes, but well worth a look if you are interested in properly old cars.  An almost total lack of any sort of safety considerations and cars which were incredibly physical to drive. Usually run over very long distances compared to most modern motor racing, there is one point where the commentator mentions an unusually short 23 mile lap!.
  • Best 4 x 4 for low car insurance for young driver 20 Jul 2022 (Forum)

  • Replacement for a Nissan Note 5 Oct 2021 (Forum)
We purchased SWMBO’s Nissan Note as a pre-reg in March 16 (a down size from a Touran). The car cost £10k and I think inflation will add at least £5k to a modern equivalent. (So looking to spend about £15k maximum). It’s now feeling a little old though only 20k miles, it’s time to change it whist it’s still worth about £5k.
  • To buy or not to buy (non structural write off) 22 Feb 2021 (Forum)
So, looking at a 2015 Peugeot 308SW, cat N about £2½k below market. I have little info yet about the car, but I'm thinking that the damage on a car about 3 years old (don't really know *when* it happened) must have been quite major to be a write off?  Would you agree?  Any advice (other than the obvious don't buy it!)?
  • Ford Fiesta 2014 - Fiesta 1.25 Petrol Engine Stuck/Burnt Valve 8 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Head needs to come off with all the trimmings to be done and the repair to the valve. My query is the car is only 6 years old, done 54k miles and been regularly serviced, mostly by Ford at the correct intervals including spark plugs. Why would this occur for a car of this age and condition it doesn't make sense to me?
