  • How to run in a sports car ? 16 May 2004 (Forum)
Just bought a new Ignis Sport (very nippy 1.5) a month ago I currently drive it pretty much as I would if it were a non-new car, that is frequently rev the engine to 4,000 rpm (but not really above that). The Suzuki dealer told me new cars did not particularly need running-in periods. I'd like to have yr opinion, what is considered best practice ? thanks
  • Peugeot 307 hdi 13 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Since cold mornings began in October, the first start up each day creates a large cloud of blue smoke, and some roughish running for the first mile or so. After that it is fine and runs well, starting again later in the day is no problem at all. Have an Xsara with same engine - no problems. Both do a mixture of runs. Didn't happen last winter.
  • Xsara Temperature 18 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Anyone know what temperature a Xsara 2.0 HDi 110 hatchback should run at? Mine runs at 75C; I'd have thought it should be higher, but the garage tell me that this engine 'is designed to run cool'. they also say that the overall fuel consumption of 43mpg is 'about right'. the car is 13 months old, covered 13k miles.

I thought power was i.e the ability to do work. confused over this. What is the definition of a short run one that does not get the engine up to normal operating temp? Bye for now

  • Briggs & Stratton mower sooty 6 Aug 2016 (Forum)
This mower is under 3 years old and is clean with very low mileage (small garden!). I was away last w/e and Mrs S said it felt like it was running short of fuel - it starts to rev itself when it is. (The engine runs at same revs whether clutch is engaged or not). So she filled with unleaded from our usual can - not dirty. The mower now idles and runs roughly, with black puffs of smoke from exhaust, and the plug is wet sooty.

  • Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - 04 2.0 Diesel D4D - Cold running 14 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Vehicle also idles very rough with slight engine rock as if off a cylinder it takes a long time to reach running temperature. We put our hand held code reader on vehicle code came up P 1239. Injector - open circut wiring When running temperature reached vehicle runs 100% all day long. Any feedback greatly accepted, Reguards Paul {removed repeated words in subject header that automatically get included when you make your selection from the compulsory drop down menus and fill in boxes.
  • Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 96 1.4 Lumpy running 13 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Due to a power steering leak I've not run my Polo for about 1 month now and the battery had gone flat when I went to start it today. No problem as I used jump leads to get it going. The problem is the engine is really running rough now and it definately not running on all 4 cylinders.
  • Peugeot 405 Cambelt change/timing 1 Sep 2002 (Forum)
The belt appears to be in good condition and was not excessively slack. The engine won't run when timed correctly, runs but does not pull well when the camshaft is advanced by one tooth (17 crankshaft degrees) & runs much better with the cam advanced by 2 teeth (34 crank degrees). Is the ignition timed off the crank or the camshaft & can the engine management partially compensate for mechanical mistiming?
  • Short run, save the lecture please 18 Apr 2002 (Forum)
However the car refused to start until it was churned for a painful amount of time, it did then start with clouds of smoke, popping banging etc then ran as per normal. At this point what was the correct thing to do, (a) take it for a short run (but long enough to bring it up to temp) (b) take it for a long run, (c) drive gently (d) drive hard. Which combination of the above?? Also is there a correct procedure to start a car in this condition to minimise the damage caused by the unburnt fuel in the Cat?

  • Smart Fortwo Cabriolet - All day running lights 6 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Hello there, I have recently purchased a Smart fortwo Cabriolet, registered in October 2012. It has come to my attention that my car is without "all day running lights". As I understand it, all new cars registered after April 2011 had to have "ADRLs". My car being registered long after this, shouldn't it have "ADRLs" as standard equipment?  Thanks.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace 2003 - trouble starting after running out of diesel 11 Apr 2015 (Forum)
After stupidly running out of diesel I can no longer start my Berlingo. I have bled the system and there is fuel present at the pump but I still cannot get it to fire. The engine turns but it's as dead as a dodo.
