  • Peugeot 406 HDi 110 - Not satisfied with solid flywheel conversion. 10 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Now, ive read a lot of posts regarding conversion including some on these forums and ppl were most satisfied describing clutch as smooth and chatter was only the problems when they had DMF. But i just cant find no1 talk about it after the conversion. Other than that car seems just a bit rougher at hard acceleration which is normal afaik. I dont know should i call the guy or not, he can allways say it cause of the solid flywheel...
  • Skoda Octavia - Clutch fitted 7000 miles ago, now really bad 13 Jul 2016 (Forum)
I had a new clutch/flywheel fitted back in May, to replace the DMF (which was failing rapidly). I purchased the new clutch kit from a respected supplier, and contacted a garage recommended to me from the Skoda forum. They fitted the new clutch kit, and had to buy a new release bearing, as the one which had been supplied with the clutch kit, had been destroyed in transit by the Royal Mail.
  • VW Passat/Ford Mondeo/Mazda 6 - Buying Used: Heart says diesel, head says petrol 10 Nov 2012 (Forum)
For our money we can only find relatively high mileage diesels (50-60,000) and I am very wary of the potential costs of the diesel engine - DMF (£800), Injectors, Turbo (£1500) etc... My head on the other hand is thinking about cash outlay and risk - I'm now thinking just to go down the naturally aspirated petrol engine route, where the engines are simpler and less to go wrong from a used perspective (i.e. with no warranty).
  • Suzuki Grand Vitara - Grand Vitara 1.9ddis buying advice - dpf concerns 15 Aug 2011 (Forum)
We still love the car and i'm a die hard Ford fan but economically its no longer making sense with its general niggles and big bills looming such as the dmf and clutch. It doesn't really fit our lifestyle either now the kids are growing up - we regularly go to country shows and walk/cycle/camp - usually using our second car, my Jimny especially to tow a trailer with the bikes in as its just more suitable for rough fields and car parks but we're at our absolute maximum with 4 of us in it.
  • small 6-7 seat MPV - Best used small MPV (£5k - £10k) 4 Aug 2010 (Forum)
VW Touran is the current favourite, but have yet to drive.  Would it be worth getting the Touran with a DSG, as I've heard that the DMF can fail (and doesn't on the automatics?).  How is the reliability though as VW has less than a glowing reputation in the last 10 years. I've always liked Honda and had a 03-08 Accord Tourer for a month recently which was great.
  • Please suggest 6 Jan 2014 (Forum)
I know that I am going to choose petrol and auto coz I do around 12000 to 15000 miles a year mostly on motor ways and some city driving. Don't want to spend on DMf and all diesel issues. Will keep the keep the car for atleast few years and budget is 7000. I did look around on auto trader and based on earlier suggestions i checked out honda jazz, Kia ceed, avensis, focus and fiesta.
  • Peugeot 406 - Peugeot 406 HDI 110 aux belt rattle 14 Apr 2013 (Forum)
I have replaced several things to try and eliminate this issue: Clutch DMF All engine mounts, including the bottom one Cambelt Water pump Aux belt and tensioner Bottom crankshaft pulley I've done a lot of changing and swapping of tensioners with only marginal improvements.
  • Ford S-MAX - Starting problem, temperature fault in CAT 19 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I am no technical car expert and with the car otherwise functioning OK it makes it hard to justify spending the quoted £1300 repair for clutch & DMF replacement. The 2 nd  garage told me that there is a possibility that not doing the repair could impact the CAT and eventually damage it.  Has anybody else come across this problem, first of all of the car not always starting well, the engine RPM being up & down for a while and getting faults on the CAT temperature sensor?
  • SAAB 9-3 1.8T Vector Sport vs Toyota Avensis 1.8 - feedback requested on reliability and drive 24 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Also HJ's CBCB on the Vectra states that even the petrol vectra's have Dual Mass Flywheels. Any idea if petrol Saabs have DMFs? Please could you provide your experiences with this car. If not for the Saab, my other choice would be a Toyota Avensis 1.8 vvt-i, which is priced similarly. I understand that the Avensis would be more reliable than the Saab.
  • Renault Grand Scenic - Replace or wait? 19 May 2022 (Forum)
Due to issues like this I'm starting to worry about the bigger bills that may be incoming such as clutch and DMF. I've got more of a sensible head on since looking at current pricing of cars. I test drove the new qashqai and enjoyed it, but it's alot of money. I test drove a 1.6 turbo petrol Sportage and then a 1.7 diesel sportage.
  • vw golf mk4 1.9 gttdi 130 - golf gt tdi 130 flat spot 16 Oct 2011 (Forum)
I'd also like to ad that my drive is very steep and I usually park nose up as I don't want to kill the DMF constantly reversing up it. Could oil be seeping back into places it shouldn't.  I've also noticed the sulphury smell a cat usually gives off a few times in the last week so maybe that could be another consideration.
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 (1985 - 2000) - New Motor - something for the weekend 12 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Thankfully that shouldn't be too hard - around here garage rates are a whopping 27 euros an hour and every workshop is teaming with old men that have all grown up with these cars. Plus, with no DPF or DMF to worry about, I don't think I'll be losing much sleep. Heidi is now asleep under her protective cover. She may venture out and take the kids to school one day this week, but only if it's not raining...
  • Kia Ceed Sportswagon - (another) time to change? 21 Jan 2021 (Forum)
Oh, there was an MoT advisory of lower suspension arms wearing out which probably would cost 300 pounds; and the service is due in two months which will probably cost 180 pounds though I had only done 5,000 miles last year.  The Ceed has none of the usual things that honestjohn doesn’t like - DPFs, DMFs and belt cams, so the main bits should be all good. But the MoT advisory, and the fact that the a/c condenser was perished highlights the fact that nothing lasts forever and things do wear out. I would need to borrow a bit of money to change, but with interest rates very low (2.9 percent for a car loan from the bank), and much lower outgoings due to covid than normal…. is this the right time?
  • 1.2 TSI vs 1.6 CR 105 - Skoda Fabia - advice to a colleague 6 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I asked her "How long are you going to keep it?" About 10 years. I immediately told her about the DPF and DMFs and what they do and how much they cost and how long they last. "But the tax is cheap and it does 67 mpg". I further explained that any tax savings would be gobbled up by maintaining the vehicle and one will not get anywhere near 67mpg - the VED system is based on totally inaccurate data" I asked her why the dealer did not persuade her to go petrol?
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Golf GTI 1.8T - first impressions 25 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Not the end of the world I suppose. In his opinion, the DMF is completely unnecessary on the petrol engine, and he has done a few solid conversions now without any issue. I can live with it for now in any case. Finally when returning to idle, the engine would hold at around 1500 RPM for 5 seconds or so before settling to normal speed.
  • MPG Petrol & Diesel Figures/Car Economics 17 Nov 2021 (Forum)
Are the servicing costs higher on a diesel car? What about consumable items I assume they are the same either way ? There is also the dreaded DPF/DMF/EGR issues, or are they overrated? I should add, not in a ULEZ zone. What I am therefore asking is; where does MPG rank in the overall costs of ownership? Is a diesel as economical as they sound for MPG?
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 1.8 or 2.0 litre petrol, or 2.0 TDCI? 18 Feb 2009 (Forum)
HJ's car-by-car breakdown at http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=119 lists a long catalogue of problems with the diesel (injectors, DMF, DPF, which may not be all that common but could be expensive disasters if they happened while the car was in use for business. OTOH, it seems that the extra torque of the diesel will make it a much nicer drive.
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.3TDCI Ecoflex, 2008 - HELP!!! problems within 2 weeks of purchase!! 30 Dec 2011 (Forum)
It was clear that the words " replace and fit new diesel filter" had been added on by someone else, in different handwriting. There was also a comment that simply said "engineer notes DMF/clutch" I enquired what this meant and was told it was nothing to worry about, and that it "would need replacing at some point but not yet." I asked if they meant once they were out of the months warranty and was told it wouldn't be covered by the warranty anyway, which I was not given any paperwork for at all.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace - Dad-to-be swapping small van for a LAV - which one 20 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Despite driving diesels for a long time, I've become quite turned off modern common rail diesels as I feel they're less reliable with expensive consumables - DPF, DMF and the fragile injection system. I also am keen on converting the next vehicle to dual fuel (to petrol & LPG/propane) to save on running costs & improve emissions. However the van based LAVs tend to have weedy petrols and powerful diesels and I like me some speedy cars!
  • FIAT Doblo Cargo - Shaking on acceleration in all gears 7 Feb 2014 (Forum)
No wobble whatsoever when coasting out of gear at any speed, (or with clutch depressed). No wobble when stationary at any revs, so hopefully not clutch or DMF. Wobble felt through seats, floor, but not really through the steering wheel or gearstick. FEELS like it's coming from the front of the van but it's hard to say. Also difficult to say whether the wobble is side to side or front to back etc.
