  I'm looking for a small automatic to replace my J reg Clio which I bought in June and drove for a whole 5 months before the autobox failed. I learn from this website that Renault autos are not reliable, and I know old Fiesta autos are not worth looking at - any other tips as to what to avoid?

  I ask only because I'm interested... Why does there seem to be a presumption against towing with automatics? I regularly tow a horse & trailer (total about 1.75 tonne), previously with an auto Rangey classic, and now with my X5. I've never had a problem, but when I tell people, I get the pursed lips and shaking head treatment.

  Hi all I'm looking for some recommendations on an automatic family car. Something roomy enough for a family of 4 (doesn't need to be massive) and that has a reasonable size boot (golf clubs!). Would like something reliable as I like to keep cars for around 5 years.

  But after delving into the best auto boxes for my type of car, budget and driving it got me thinking.... Is it worth having an automatic box for 10k miles a year in 75% stop/start traffic and the rest for family rural trips and holidays. I have read reports on the best type of automatics but when you read into them they are exactly efficient and long term reliable.

  but now looking to upgrade car but would have so much more options with a manual as well as save a bit on fuel also I have been asked to drive the work car and haven't been able to, So I want to learn to drive a manual car has anyone on here done this before gone from automatic to manual not the other way around? if so any advice/tips ? Thanks p.s anyone considering automatic I strongly recommend against it. take your time learn manual as then you have the option of both for the future and if you haven't got a big budget auto cars are limited and hard to find.

  Could get quite a bit of stop-start traffic on certain days hence the requirement for automatic. I will do the odd motorway run on weekends which should clear the DPF if that's a factor. - Budget 4-5K max  - Need something nippy and capable of not frustrating the heck out of my speed wise.

  I am keen to try and buy a new shape C Class Mercedes CDI 200 or CDI 220. Yesterday a very knowledgable Taxi driver told me he always prefers automatics; but if he buys a 1.9 or 2.0 litre diesel car be it Passat, Skoda or upmarket Mercedes, the automatic gearboxes in taxis of this size engine give trouble if they are diesel.He said he would go for petrol so he could have a reliable automatic.

  My Father is looking for a nearly-new diesel automatic. The choice has boiled down to one of 2 cars (nothing else under consideration, not even a Mondeo TDCi...): Saab 9-3 saloon, Vector Sport finish, 1.9tdi with 150bhp; or Volvo S40 D5 SE Geartronic, 2.4D with 180bhp.
