• ESTATE CAR 2009 ONWARDS - Stuck with decision. 10 Apr 2014 (Forum)
  I have £7500k to buy used car that has to tick following boxes. ESTATE or MPV type - 3 kids and 3 large dogs - Economy good as motorway miles and school run too - upto 5yrs old but pref within 4 - comfy, reasonable mileage (but what is reasonable on a DIESEL or PETROL?) Should I look at Diesel or petrol? Good Insurance & Road Tax. I do average of 120 motorway miles a week and 80 about town/school run.

  I drive (at weekends now due to company car) a 2001 MG ZT 190 LPG and the Mrs drives a Focus 2001 1.6 Zetec. I love my MG, cheap to run but sits on drive all all week now and somone really needs to get better use out of it. We are currently paying combined road tax of £455 a year, plus x2 lots of insurance to drive probably 50 miles a week now .

  Coasting in gear and then applying light throttle causes the car to jerk quite severely before the revs pick up and off you go. This is a real pain in morning traffic! After about 5 minutes running, it is near perfect. So far it has had a service including oil, oil filter, air filter and new Bosch spark plugs. The old spark plugs were dry and a nice brown colour. Servicing has had no effect on the cold running problem.

  After that it then runs smooth and quiet as it normally does. Its recently had the timing belt changed and also the inlet manifold has been changed due to the swirl valves not working. The wiring on no. 3 injector has been replaces.

  Hello My Vectra has recently started to jump/misfire slightly when changeing gear and accelerating it jumps a couple of times then carrys on fine until i change gear accelerate then it jumps again then carrys on fine it runs nearly as normal aprt from jumpy when accelerating when accelerateing normally its as above but if i accelerate harder the engine management light comes on and car slows down but after i turn engine off the EMS light turns off and car go back to normal apart from slight jumping desribed as above Ive took car to two garages to be coded and neither registerd a fault even with engine running and EMS light on ive had sparkplugs changed and garage has stated it might be a coil pack but i would have thought that would have shown up on EMS with code ?

• Vauxhall Vectra C - Engine Coolant Temperature 9 Mar 2012 (Forum)
  A the beginning of October last the temperature gauge started showing a very low reading and a faulty thermostat was diagnosed which was replaced and all seemed well although the gauge did not appear to show as high a reading as before the change, Now during the last few weeks the temperature gauge hardly moves off the stop position even on quite long runs, following a run if the engine is turned off and left for say 5 minutes and then restarted the gauge shows near the 100c mark but drops back to just of the stop position when the vehicle has been driven for approx 1/4 mile, also there are times when the qauge reading fluctuates between cold and half way to the 80c mark.
• dexron 111 with castrol z - oil compatabilaty 5 Feb 2012 (Forum)
  I have a hilux surf and auto box runs using dexron 111 oil.Now because its my everyday car for work and towing trailers and a large caravan around europe,.I would like to know weather replacing the dexron 111 gearbox oil with the synthetic castrol z oil is possible.Would i have to have the box completley flushed before changing the oil,or can i just drain the old oil out of the gearbox sump and refill with castrol.As i know some dex 111 oil would still be in the tourque converter,would this matter.I would like to do this because the surf is clocking up around 15ooo miles of towing plus all the weekend run around stuff, and i think the old girl deserves the best oil to keep her going.i,ve had the surf for 4 years and 73,000 miles and never missed a beat.She,s got 169000 miles under her bonnet and still going strong,i just think if there are better oils on the market the surf deserves it.can anybody give me an answer.cheers

  110 1999 1V 35000 miles Golf 1.9 GT TDi Wife's car and therefore not noticed it before. Definite lack of power, feels like driving a non turbo car. Although...
• Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 01 1.2 Engine cuts out and EML comes on. 6 Feb 2011 (Forum)
  My 1.2 SXi 16V Corsa has recently started cutting out after the engine reaches normal running temperature. This happens when slowing the car down, ie. coming off onto a slip road. It fires up again, but the rev counter has then stopped working and the light showing the engine block is on.

  I took the air filter off to have a Peek..I could see ( on the Bulkhead side) of Carb or injector unit an outlet with an olive for a pipe to go on. I put my finger on this pipe while engine is running as it has a vacume ( sucking air).......this does not affect engine running at all. I have looked everywhere for a fallen pipe..cant see anywhere..All air filter pipes are connected. Any clues on these Problems..perhaps they are connected.

  Hi, I'm wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction with a problem I'm having... The engine generally runs fine, but randomly on some journeys with no pattern as to why, the engine will start missing at low revs (between 800 and 2000rpm), if you rev the car up and release the throttle it drops to about 400rpm then returns to around 800ish but fluctuates +/- 100 rpm constantly.

  hello This fault only occurs sometimes: mostly it starts and runs fine. * I start the engine, it fires normal, then after 4 or 5 seconds the engine splutters and will stall out... I have worked out a resolve to get going.... when/if it begins to splutter, I quickly increase the revs a little.... this gives me time to quickly CLICK CLICK with the ignition key...

  I have tested my battery first thing in the morning and had it read over 10 volts and tested it when running with a result of 13+ volts. I have been living with it for a while with no other (apparent) ill effects but when I went to start it this (Monday) morning after it had sat and not run for a weekend it: 1.

  The car's done 180k but over the last 40k is been progressively difficult to start needing several turns before firing, otherwise runs fine. Of late I have to pump the fuel primer bulb to get it to go. OK to start inside of 1hr after initial start otherwise back to the bulb. I think its either getting air into the fuel or the pressure in the fuel system is able to fall when not running thus being a dog to start as the pump is initially starved.

• Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 02 1.4 Jump started but battery light remains on 26 Nov 2009 (Forum)
  We jumped it and got it back home but the headlights appeared dim and the battery light was still on after five minutes of running the engine above tickover. I checked the voltage across the battery with the engine running but it was only 9.5V making me thing that there is a problem with the charging system. I'd went to check the hand book but then remembered that I'd found it in the spare wheel well soaked with water and basically a solid block of paper .

  s running off behind the engine from three points; the exhaust, a small silver shield and a threaded boss. Although I assume that somewhere in the murky depths below the bonnet a hose is crying out to be replaced, I would be grateful for other, more knowledgeable opinions.

  My wipers will often start working for no reason and cannot be switched off except by operating the right or left direction indicators; two sweeps after the indicators are switched on the wipers will turn off and remain switched off as long as the indicators are left running. While the indicators are running all functions of the wiper control work normally. Operation of the brake light will also temporarily switch off the wipers when the fault is present. The rear wiper is not affected.
