Diesel engine disaster 22 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Hi I've just registered on this excellent site, this is my (rather long!) first post. Incidentally I found you because this site is mentioned in the latest issue of Car Mechanics magazine which I received today (readers letters page). I wonder if any experts on here can me with a problem I have with my Ford diesel Mondeo? The car is a 2004(04) model and has done 22500 miles. -

Knock for knock insurance? 5 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I then proceeded to fill in on a piece of cardboard the details of litres bought and miles i have covered since the last fill up, as I have done for the last 8000 miles. While i was sat down with the door opened a Ford Transit pickup tried to squeeze through between my car and a car at the pump opposite as he did so he caught the door edge and creased it back (the door is a write off) He got out of the Transit and accused me of opening my door as he passed even though i had being sat there at least a minute with the door open. -
Fiesta noise and gearbox whine. 14 Oct 2002 (Forum)
In addition the soundproofing over the exhaust under the rear seat and in the rear wheel arches is .. negligible ... so no wonder I could hear the brakes being applied in one of the cars I tested. It's a great car but really Ford should and could have done a lot better.. I hate all noise in a car so I have covered both with soundproofing felt and added further soundproofing to the car (with a kit from HJ's recommended http://www.noisekiller.com/). -
Renault Clio E-tech hybrid - Impressions after the first 1000 miles 21 Apr 2024 (Forum)
I am getting around 55mpg driving in a semi rural area doing mainly short journeys. Renault say that the maximum distance the car will travel in EV mode is under 2 miles. The 1.2kW traction battery is charged when decelerating or braking, there is no facility to plug into the mains. In spite of this, nearly half of the first 1000 miles has been covered in EV mode. -
Kia Sportage 4 2022 - Paint problem 25 Jan 2023 (Forum)
My concern is the amount of work required to rectify the problem, especially as what's caused the issue hasn't been identified. I don't want a spray over of the problem only for it to reoccur - even if it is covered by warranty. Would I be best pushing for a vehicle exchange - I love the car? Or what are your thoughts? Thank you -
Nissan Navara - Runaway Truck 27 Oct 2022 (Forum)
He came over last night and said the builder had been out to survey the damage and would start work in a few days. The garage said their insurance would cover the damage to the truck but our neighbour would have to pay £500 excess. A costly lapse to be sure! -
Tuscan - Hyundai Clutch/Gearbox Warranty issue 20 Mar 2019 (Forum)
Looking for some advise, my car recently stopped working, i woulld put it in gear but when getting up to speed it would make this awedul grinding noise and not go forward. Hyundai took it in to its neares dealer and we had to suthorise 1 hours inspection of £114.50 (payable if it wasnt under warranty) they then called back and advised it was a gearbox issue they would need me to authorise a further 3 hours at £114.50p/h they had told hyundai it needed a replacement gearbox and hyundai had asvised them to strip the gearbox and find out what was wrong. they then advised it was a broken clutch plate which was not covered by warranty as the car was 7 months over 2 years old and clutches are only under warranty for 2years/60000 miles. i paid the £1194 to get it fixed but asked to keep the broken parts. i took the broken parts to two seperate garages who both say that there must have been a defect as there was no wear shown on the clutch at all. -
Scenic 1.9dci power loss / light on 2 Jul 2018 (Forum)
The car is due back in with Renault next week, and my warranty doesn't cover diagnostics! They say they have been on Renault Net, but this fault isn't a known problem. This is a potentially dangerous fault and we now avoid overtaking anything unless there is a huge safety margin. -
Any - Identifying engine noises. 22 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Going to take it out tomorrow, simulate sitting in a queue of traffic, moving slowly and try to replicate. Hopefully it is the fan, because the indy garage where I bought the car should cover it. I bet we all have tales of noises we thought were one thing (or maybe someone at a garage did) and they turned out to be something else entirely. -
Hyundai trajet - Accident in one way road 16 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Just collected my young son from school. I was driving the right way down a narrow one way road when a car came out of a small garage and drove head first into me. Substantial damage to my car which is 12 year old. I have had it from new and only done 48,000 miles. I am a disabled driver and only do school and frequent hospital runs. -
Mazda CX-5 - Mazda CX-5 - Petrol vs Diesel 2WD 6 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Here's some info around our useage- - This will be a long term purchase, not a change after 3 years (DPF's and DMF's scare me on the diesel once it drops out of warranty.) - It won't do more that 10k miles per year - The car will cover more stop/start A-road driving than motorway (Motorwary will just be on family trips at weekends) One on hand the diesel has some nice grunt low down in the range so you're not changing gear all the time and the turbo gives you good power when you need it. -
Mazda 6 Diesel Estate - Mazda Mazda Mazda oh dear 24 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Thinking i was unlucky with that one decided to buy another one from a main dealer in September 2012 with just short of 80,000 how wrong i was - a year later with just short of 90,000 on well december 2013 whilst driving the DPF light started flashing and the engine management light came on so quickly booked into main dealer garage £ 500 later for an oil leak Rocker cover gasket, DPF regenerated, Oil and filter change etc etc (even though it had one in August) then a day later the engine started whining so booked in again. They dropped the sump and hey ho the crank is damaged how much £ 3,000 to replace and rebuild the bottom end for a car that is only worth 2k The Mazda 6 Estate is a great car to drive, comfy etc but seems that the engines are really no good. -

Peugeot 206 (56) - Overheating and Losing water 5 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Any ideas please? the car is in the garage for a minimum of a week every time it goes back and we have lost all confidence in them. Money is also tight but I would certainly pay to get this fixed once and for all. Thankyou. -
Volvo XC60 - Clutch issue 28 Feb 2013 (Forum)
We purchased a used approved Volvo XC60 from a Volvo main dealer 10 months ago. The car had covered 14,600 miles. We thought buying from a main dealer would give us protection should any mechanical failures occur. The car has a 3 year of 60'000 mile manufacturers warranty which expires this September. 2 weeks ago we discovered the clutch was starting to slip (at 24'000 miles) and reported to our local dealer who advised that it was a grey area and that inspection would cost £600 if the damage to the clutch friction plates was deemed to be through abuse ie poor driving. -
Volkswagen Up 2012 3 door - TakeUpreview 10 May 2012 (Forum)
If you do not cover many miles, then the Polo might be a better proposition as the interior is a step or two up in terms of quality, but since I do 60 miles a day (30 miles each way), fuel economy is a must. And I do like small cars, as they are more fun to drive, and easier to park in cities. -
NISSAN PRIMERA 2.0 PETROL 52REG - engine MAF-LAMBDA SENSOR 22 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Have got a problem with my wifes car.About a month ago it stalled and would not start,we went back two days later to tow it to a garage. On arriving at the car i decieded to see if it would start. It did so i drove it to the garage,we got there and they said if the engine diognostic light wasn/t on they wouldn,t be able to get a fault code.so we left and since covered 368miles fully loaded and in all driving speeds around town and motorway, not a moments trouble.Until now ! -
Problem with the police 17 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Just before Christmas a car crashed into my front garden wall, causing considerable damage to it. Although severely damaged, (no head lights), the car drove off at high speed and was abandoned 100 yards away. -
Peugeot 306 Hdi - Advise needed on diagnostic results 11 Nov 2010 (Forum)
He told me this was also corroded. Finally the fuel pressure regulator came up. Now the car has covered 200,000 miles and if I could keep it on the road at a reasonable price I would. However the only worry I have is that the cost of parts seems very expensive. He suggested £280ish for the fuel regulator and around £100+ for an airflow sensor.
