BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - 520d SE - 12,000m report 12 Jun 2009 (Forum)
It replaced both a E270CDi Elegance auto saloon and V70 2.4 SE petrol auto. Options specified were: * silver metallic paint and upgraded but standard size wheel (17") * automatic gear box: which hesitates less from a standing start compared to the Mercedes and I don't bother to use the tiptronic * Xenon/ adaptive lights: superb on unlit country roads * memory seats: useful and quick for regular drivers changes but seats are inifinitely adjustable and makes it much easier to maintain the right driving position, which took a while to find. -
new driving article? 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
BUT - the little fixes that the X-type needs (the pop-up vents - the drive shaft - the gauges that work some of the time - the trunk latch - the clicking transmission on the automatic models - the gas cap latch - the weeping washers - the "thunk-ing" suspension - and so on) are costing you terribly - both in reputation and financially. It's not good to spend $40,000 on a car and then not trust that it will take you safely where you need to go. -
[C]5 go on a trip........ 21 Mar 2002 (Forum)
All that metal around the gear lever is annoying, likely to become old-fashioned, and also the reason why the automatic gearbox is not illuminated at all, ensuring that you have to look in the middle of the dash to see what gear you are in at night. And on the subject of the dash ? yuk ! It?s messy, untidy and confusing. -
New (Motability) car 15 May 2023 (Forum)
With my wife having got the forms from Motability through the post today letting her know she can place an order, I've been sifting through what is on offer on the Motability website. Narrowed down to automatic, 5 doors, and a maximum of £500 advance payment. With the continued absence of the current Suzuki Ignis (and Swift) from the list I've resigned myself to getting something wider than I'd like and just mount the kerb (as per tyre vs kerb thread) to allow more room on our narrow street. -
Mercedes-Benz B-Class - B class review 6 Aug 2011 (Forum)
The car has stop start technology which automatically turns the engine off once you stop, select neutral and take your foot off the clutch. None of the electrical items or braking assist are taken out so it is possible to roll down hill slowly without any power – once you get to 10mph the car bursts into life again. -
My first 6 weeks with a 520d 15 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I’ve had a BMW 520d touring auto from 29th May and here are my first thoughts after 6 weeks and 4,500 miles of driving. My car is SE specification with no options other than an 8 speed automatic gearbox. It has standard 17 inch wheels and run flat tyres (no spare). Exterior colour of blue and a beige leather interior. I do circa 30,000 miles a year so comfort is my priority but I do drive ‘swiftly’ so do expect a car to handle on the B roads as well as the motorways. -
BMW 3-Series E91 Touring (2005 - ) - 320d : ownership report 16 Jun 2009 (Forum)
the car recognises each key and remembers the last setting of the mirrors, the aircon and the radio. Cool. You can set the near-side mirror to dip automatically when you engage reverse. You can drop stuff in the boot by lifting the rear window (as an alternative to opening the rear hatch). There?s an iPod connection, but I can?t control the iPod from the radio. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 105TDi - the first 30/90 (months/k miles) 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
- rear seats fold without having to remove headrests (MkIV hassle), but squabs are fixed, therefore floor not truly flat when folded - tailgate no longer lockable (questionable usefulness in a hatch) - the std semi-automatic aircon does as least a good a job of maintaining a steady interior temperature as the climate control units in the MKIV, ?S? reg Audi A4 and the LagunaII Tourer that I?ve had, so that was money well saved. -
My Road Test - Volvo XC70 D5 Summum Auto 19 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Many manufacturers claim theirs AC systems are true 'autos', but in practice it just varies. In this case, the system works perfectly, even with fans turning on automatically for a short period of time when parked (engine off, no one inside), supposedly to dry the vents from inside, thus preventing moisture and bacteria build-up. Very clever - have you ever seen a car that takes care for itself ? -
BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - 325D Final installment 24 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I can't see the bay lines in the mirrors and so far have not worked out how to get the passenger mirror to drop automatically when reverse gear is selected. The Audi mirrors were much larger and exposed a bigger field of view so I could reverse it lorry style into shoebox. Selecting the passenger mirror toggle seems too simplistic an approach. -
3 years with a Jazz CVT 29 Aug 2020 (Forum)
This really was a relevation, especially with the expectations after reading the rubbish spouted by motoring magazines. Clearly a 102bhp automatic supermini is not going to be that fast under any circumstances, but in the context of what it is, i found the package hugely impressive. We came to the Jazz from a turbo diesel Hyundai i30 with a t/c auto. -
Oil labelling explained 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
THE BASICS All oils are intended for an application and in general are not interchangeable. You would not for example put an Automatic Transmission Oil or a Gear Oil in your engine! It is important to know what the oils intended purpose is. VISCOSITY Most oils on the shelves today are ?Multigrades?, which simply means that the oil falls into 2 viscosity grades (i.e. 10w-40 etc) Multigrades were first developed some 50 years ago to avoid the old routine of using a thinner oil in winter and a thicker oil in summer. -
If you don't want to get a ticket "just" 20 Nov 2001 (Forum)
While a 30 limit indicates hazards that should merit street lighting, it is no longer the case that street lighting automatically indicates a 30 limit, and the link should be severed. When 30 limits were introduced urban areas were generally smaller. This, together with the presence of lighting, meant that 30 limits were generally for comparatively short, identifiable, distances. -
Car accident insurance advice 29 Jan 2018 (Forum)
The Divisional Court disagreed, holding that whether a person had driven carelessly is primarily a matter of fact: the duty of a driver following another vehicle was, as far as reasonably possible, to take up such a position and to drive in such a fashion, as to be able to deal with all traffic exigencies REASONABLY expected. It is automatically assumed by many that in rear end shunts the shunter is guilty of careless driving . Not so if the one in front takes some unindicated and unpredicable action that leads to an accident then that is not careless driving by the back marker. -
Forced out of car due to insurance blunder Vol 2. 15 Oct 2008 (Forum)
But think about it, the officer told me that the database told him that my insurance had lapsed on Feb.11th so when I told him that we (my wife and myself) were 99% sure that it had renewed itself automatically on direct debit why didn't he just go back to the database read-out and get the name of my previous insurer and phone them up? Easy, eh? Answer: because the database read-out doesn't include that detail. -

destination=node%2F48199%23comment-form">register to post comments michael knight An Alternative 8 hours 1 min ago James...how about an alternative approach; any motor vehicle driving within a town/city centre is automatically slowed to a maximum 20mph. No idea how to do it, some kind of ECU-jamming perhaps.. but imagine the improvement in our environments. Safety, noise, emissions all improved. As for your initial question. -
2004 Pontiac GTO - Motor Trend review 7 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Coupled to the optional ($695) Tremec six-speed manual transmission (an electronically controlled four-speed automatic is standard), the Vette V-8 kicks the GTO with inspiring swiftness. Even wearing its standard M+S tires, our test car scorched from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and tripped the quarter-mile lights in 13.62 seconds at 104.78 mph--numbers that would leave a 1960s-vintage GTO seeing yellow. -
Warning for Rattle: how to do it, how not to do it 14 Feb 2010 (Forum)
It was neither large nor "compact" but what was then known as "mid-size": about the same size as a contemporary Rolls-Royce. It had slippery bench seats, an oval steering wheel and automatic transmission controlled by large, stiff buttons protruding through the dashboard. A lever moving in a vertical slot applied a transmission lock. The white paint was bloomed and there were a couple of small rust spots but the body was intact and sound. -
16 important OIL questions answered! 8 Jan 2013 (Forum)
It is a sad fact that you get what you pay for, but even so, stick to the reputable UK/European brands, and remember that shipping an oil half way around the world doesn?t automatically make it better than one made in your home town. As for TV advertising?well, does anybody believe it? Due to its huge cost, a TV advertising campaign can significantly raise the cost of specialist items such as oil.
