Washing cars 18 Jun 2007 (Forum)
One of the shiniest cars I've ever seen was a colleagues old Rover 90. He swore that all he ever did, was wash it occasionally, polish it once a year, but whenever it rained, he'd go out and go over it with a chamois. I polished mine last week, and as all it had done was a few town miles, after it rained earlier today I gave it a quick chamois, 'cos for personal reasons I want it to look good this weekend (the chamois rinsed out black water). -
What would you do? (Selling car, fault) 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
It could be so many things, I'm loathe to get it sent in somewhere to be sorted, only to sell it right after. I'm tempted to just whack it up on eBay, where any old piece of rubbish seems to get a good price, describe the fault and just see what happens. Other than that the car is fine. I've changed the oil every 6k, etc. -
Replacement for Volvo 440 auto 4 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Looking for a replacement for our old Volvo 440 auto. Seen a 01Y Megane 1.6 16v auto and an 0202 Astra 1.6 8v auto both at around £5500 with around 20k. The Megane is a nice car (Dynamique spec) but I've read bad things here and in Parkers about the auto box. -
The joys of new car ownership.... 3 Jul 2005 (Forum)
This is the first experience I've had of main dealer servicing for many, many years, as the previous family cars have all been old and serviced at dependable but relatively cheap independants. For what appears to be an oil/filter job, plus a once over, I'm hit for £325. My main point of interest is how they manage to arrive at a figure of £75 (excl. -
car supermarket insane prices!! 27 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I just bought a "very clean" two and a half year old Rover 25, with a few nice extras, for just over £3000 from a good local dealer. Great deal I thought. The same car age-wise, from a nearby supermarket (NOT a "leg-breaker" finance place) was six grand. -
Large Car query 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
All- I'm hoping you guys can give me a little help with regards to buying a 1-2 year old large car. Basically our current Focus cannot handle the double pushchair and the other klobber that comes with kids (!!). Basically I'm after value (and value for money)- rather than a badge. From my initial looking it would seem the Vectra offers the best of price in this category with Autotrader noting you can pick up a "2004 04 Reg Vauxhall Vectra 1800 cc LS" for around £8k. -
'89 Audi 100 2.0E (5cyl RT) fuel prob 16 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Fuel pump packed in (lots of noise, loss of pressure/delivery) then ominously quiet as the car coasted to the hard shoulder... Main dealer replaced fuel pump today, but the car refused to fire up. They say that they don't have enough experience of these old cars (!) and have recommended I take it to a fuel injection specialist. -
BMW 320D Injection Fuel Pump 15 Apr 2003 (Forum)
My car is two years old and has covered 35,000 miles, I use Shell diesel and most of my jouneys are motorways. Early this year the fuel pump had to be replaced along with some damaged parts - timing guardrail. -
Who Was Driving? 17 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I have just read in today's newspapers that two youths, aged 18 & 20, both of whom admitted being in a car which crashed and killed a 73 year old pedestrian, cannot be prosecuted as there is no evidence as to which one of them was driving at the time. They both admit being in the car and they both deny driving. -
Other-driver uncomfortableness 2 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Stupid, I know, but ... My car has just been in for an auto-gearbox fix. Apart from the old arm-and-leg bill, it just doesn't feel *right*... It's running fine, no apparent problem, but ... This same phenomena occurs every time anybody else drives my car - be it brother, sister, mother, father, workmate, mechanic etc Despite often NOT having to adjust the seat/mirrors/steering wheel/etc, it just doesn't feel *right* ... -
Honda Accord/Lexus IS200 anyone? 8 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I am looking at getting out of the company car scheme, and buy privately. I had thought about a VW or Audi until I read some threads in this forum. I had a Honda Accord 10 yrs ago and loved it, but what about the current 2001 car? Is it as trouble free as my old one was, is it good on long runs, and in particular is quiet? -
Ford Focus, 2009 1.6 Petrol - Clutch pedal goes to floor and is not spring back 9 Apr 2023 (Forum)
The car is 14 years old and garage is likely to use genuine ford parts ? -
5 litre Mercedes - clean air compliant 27 Jun 2022 (Forum)
The law seems pretty straightforward and the council appear to have made a mistake (or several), but it seems truly surreal to wave a 20 year old 5 litre car into a Clean Air Zone! (Real World consumption from HJ for a 2006 "Blue Efficiency" model quotes official mpg of 30.1, which I believe may not be achievable in an urban environment, ahem.) -
highest mileage car you ever bought 29 Apr 2019 (Forum)
A few years ago I was looking for a Volvo estate but funds were tight due to young family and large mortgage. I found a decent one for about 8K and chatted... -
Leon vs Corsa vs Fiesta 24 Jul 2018 (Forum)
Helping my brother do a bit of research at the moment as he's looking at cars for his son. So, I thought I'd just put a little something on HJ to see what everyone thinks. Overall, which do you think would be a better first car for my nephew out of these three? He's a 17 year old who has just passed his driving test, usually sensible and I think he's getting a black box too to reduce insurance. -
any - Insurance for university holidays only 23 Mar 2017 (Forum)
My son has just turned 19. He spends most of his time away at university and doesn't have his own car but it's really useful if he can borrow mine when back for the holidays. I have been using 'Marmalade' for this, but they have a limitation that the car must be no more than 7 years old. As my Auris was registered in 2010, I will have to find an alternative provider soon. -
Vw polo - Small, quiet car 27 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Hi. This is a rerun of a 10 year old question. Please don't refer me back to that because there may be new options :) I have to drive 3... -
Any - high mileage 22 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Just wondering what sort of millage you can expect to see out of a modern car that is well maintained? I've driven lorries that are 5-6 years old that have covered well over 1 million miles and still drive well and I've been a passenger in a A reg Mercedes non turbo diesel that had been round the clock 3 times with the original owner and very well maintained. -
Toyota Yaris 1.0 vvt 2005 reg - Toyota yaris does not unlock 14 Jan 2015 (Forum)
It seems odd that the lock button works fine. Wonder if anybody had similar issue? We only have one remote key for the car. Unlocking the car in the old fashioned ke in a lock way works fine. -
Vauxhall Astra H Estate - Cam belt change 8 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I recently purchased a Vauxhall Astra H auto estate which has 36,500 miles on clock. The car is ex mobility and has a FSH from dealer , and I am very happy with it. However, I see from the website that HJ recommends a cambelt change every 40,000 miles or 4 years. The car is 3 years old (60 reg) should I be looking to get the cambelt changed at 40,000 miles?
