  • Any - Electric vehicles - how often would you change? 12 May 2020 (Forum)
Suspension wearing parts should be similar.  Trim and similar bits will be the same.  Tyres similar.  No EGR/DPF/DMF or moving parts in an ICE. There are stories of early Leafs doing 300k+ as taxis with minimal battery degradation and that will only improve as battery tech moves on.   Assuming that we’re still buying and owning cars in 20 odd years (rather than renting them/sharing them as and when needed), I think my frequency of changing cars will only decrease.
  • Ford Focus Titanium 2.0 petrol 2008 - Focus 2.0 duratec running issues 16 May 2016 (Forum)
It's been to two different ford garages and countless other garages. All have ran diagnostics but nothing was ever found. The dmf was found to be going so a new one along with a new clutch and slave were fitted but no improvement. A good friend who's a mechanic found the inlet flaps were worn so a new manifold was fitted with a new map but to no avail.
  • Ford Mondeo Estate 2004 - Flywheel and Clutch Replacement 11 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Hi, I am new to this forum and a relatively amateur at mechanical DIY, most I have attempted so far is front pads and discs.   I have suffered from the usual DMF failure, but because of being made redundant I dont have the funds to get this done, so as I have time on my hands I am going to attempt myself.   I managed to buy a flywheel and clutch from ebay from a scrap yard, the car it came from recently had these parts fitted but was written off shortly after, having being rear-ended.
  • Skoda Superb Estate - Which Skoda is more reliability 22 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Assume that I never rev a cold engine over 2500 rpm and a warm one never over 4000 rpm, I service my cars like clock work and drive 15 miles motorway each way to work daily (which I think is good enough for DPF). Taking into consideration things like turbo's; injectors; DMF; DPF and whatever else they bolt on to these engines, which of the above 3 engines, with our current knowledge, should require the least repairs (ignoring fuel and tax etc for the moment)?  Many thanks
  • Audi A6 2.0 TDi - Trying to get Audi goodwill payment 19 Aug 2010 (Forum)
However, after a further 10k miles, we've had the flywheel and clutch changed by Audi to the tune of £1200, after it displayed classic systems of DMF failure. Audi of course say its wear and tear. The mechanic gave me the flywheel and said although the clutch plates have some wear, its the damping mech of the flywheel that has failed due to "hard starts."
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - "Clutch"-ing at straws 1 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Imagine my surprise, dear reader, when my local garage tell me that the shudder is definitely not suspension or wheels but is the clutch. I see from the receipt that the garage who fitted it appeared to use a DMF and presumably the attendant bits that go with it. Its going to be such a hassle sorting this out. PITA. Can a newly-fitted clutch and flywheel really start to fail this fast? cheers tt
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 06 2.0 gti thumping noise felt thru clutch pedal o 28 Jul 2008 (Forum)
but when i left the car into the VW dealer for a check they said its nothing to worry about and has something to do with the DMF (dual mass flywheel) In other words VW dealer says this is a normal type sound on a Golf GTI 2.0 FSI turbo! Is there anyone out there has the same type of problem? or is aware of some light thumping sound when moving off from rest.
  • Transit Tourneo 8 May 2006 (Forum)
I have a '53 plate tranny tourneo mini bus 2.0 tdci, its a taxi, it has 165k miles on the clock. 11 months since I had a replacement dmf flywheel and clutch fitted, without checking the invoice i think it had 125k on the clock then. Since then, every now and again the engine cuts out when you ask it for power changing from 2nd to 3rd gear, such as accelerating away up hill both empty and loaded to the gunnels.
  • Volkswagen Polo - At what point is it not fit for purpose? 4 Jan 2020 (Forum)
My question is can manufacturers just try and hide behind saying a part has been ‘updated’ thereby us having to foot the bill? My view is that this isn’t just an ‘update’ of a part; changing from DMF to SMF is not just a slight update it is completely different. Would this suggest that the original system was not fit for purpose? Particularly in light of the fact that VW simply don’t manufacture the original part any longer.
  • Hyundai i40 Tourer - Clutch Concern 5 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Google search shows some reports of clutch problems. My concern is I do not know (right now) if the DMF was done, along with the clutch - or if it was just the clutch. There is no certainty as to whether I am liable to pay for the costs here, there's a lot of if's and buts.   Thanks
  • Peugeot 308 - Faulty clutch on car purchased from dealer 19 Sep 2017 (Forum)
However, Peugeout stated that it may not just need a new clutch but also a new dual mass flywheel. Im unsure whether the dealer would replace the DMF even if it did need requiring. I maybe left with a half completed job. My immediate plan is to take the car to a second indepdent Peugeot dealer for confirmation of the clutch. What should be my next steps?
  • VW Passat 1.9 TDI Estate 11 Nov 2012 (Forum)
However after thinking logically (i.e. not every diesel owner suffers a turbo failure, or countless DMF replacements) we have both come to the conclusion that due to our mileage each year we would be around £700-£800 better off (and that is a conservative estimate) by going diesel. However I'm also aware of potential pitfalls, especially with newer engines with DPFs, and with certain problems with older engines (i.e. 2 litre VW units).
  • Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - petrol or diesel? 25 Jan 2009 (Forum)
We also have to tow our 1325kg caravan about 10 times a year. We have had diesels for a while, but with all the DPF, DMF etc debate I'm not sure it's worth it. In the S-Max, the 2.0 diesel would suffice but I would really like the 2.2 for a bit more shove especially towing. However, while there are plenty of 2.0's on the used market, there are very few 2.2s and they are very highly priced.
  • VW Tranporter T5, Petrol Estate cars. - Sunday Morning Decision time: Van is dying..... 27 Nov 2020 (Forum)
The day has come. DMF, probably clutch as well and something going noisily wrong within the RHS wheel bearings (as I understand it). I have a friendly local independant who gave the heads up when it was in for a small job.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0TDCi Vibration with strong acceleration 8 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Fortunately, the car seems to have so much torque that its still very driveable. History of the car: -new clutch, starter, dmf, 2000 miles ago. -in July '08, a split boost hose was replaced -an injector was recoded at 65000 miles; record for this says "CARRY OUT DIAGNOSTIC CHECKS, TRACED DTC P23 36 NUMBER ONE INJECTOR REACHED ADAPTIVE LIMIT RE-ENTER CORRECTION VALUES" -No 4 Cylinder was "reconfigured" at 55000 miles (thats what the document says) Could this be a split intercooler hose?
  • KIA Cee'd - feedback on reliability of high mileage ceed / i30 21 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Perhaps 8000 - 10000 miles. Given that this age ceed diesels do not have the usual problem areas such as DMFs and DPFs, will the reliability of  this car be similar to a similar age / mileage petrol ceed? There doesn't seem to be many endemic diesel faults mentioned in HJ's car by car breakdown.
  • Ford Mondeo - Any other large petrol car suggestions 24 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Petrol - I do about 7000 miles a year.   Leaving low miles aside I'm worried about stories of expensive DMF and other repairs on newer diesels. Traditional handbrake not electronic Traditional key ignition Chain cam rather than belt which I think means the 2.0 petrol Mk4? Reliable, cheap So thinking 2009 or newer Mk4 Mondeo - seems to avoid Mondeo steering rack issues on 2008s and earlier.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8 Revs to 3000 rpm then dies off 15 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Maybe worth a mention is the simply dismal fuel consumption...urban driving hardly returns 35 mpg...longer, gentle runs struggle to top 40. The car has also passed through the dreaded DMF saga, but the dealer not only repaired it under warranty, but after a couple of weeks also recalled us to fit a modification to ensure the fault does not return. Any suggestions welcome guys as I am really out of options now.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 05 2.0 TDCI Flywheel/clutch replaced, now gearbox 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hello I got bit by DMF failure 2 months ago (failed starter caused by getting clogged up with swarf from disintegrating dual-mass flywheel/clutch); I ran the car on the replacement starter till it started sticking again... and then the clutch went.
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 2004 1.9dCi Clutch pedal failure 7 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Labour is hopefully going to be mate rate (to be negotiated), but what do you reckon I'm looking at parts-wise? I have horrible DMF and clutch kit thoughts in my head at the moment. Cheers DP
