  • Scenic driving me - or not - nuts 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
When I walk away and leave the car for 20 minutes and try again it usually starts first time. The battery seems to be strong, as lights, radio and central locking all work perfectly however the starter motor doesn't turn over at all. My first thought was that the immobiliser was faulty but the AA say thats not the case. They've taken meter readings from around the starter motor and they say that its getting the necessary charge but even so they witnessed the fault and were at a loss as to what was wrong.
  • Vigilantes 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Again if IIRC the member of the public was the father of the lad who was killed by the dangerous driving of the aforementioned disqualified driver. This was raised in a radio programme when someone, claiming to be an off-duty policeman, was advocating that the public should report all traffic offences they witness to the police. He argued that most of us would not hesitate to report a serious offence like a hit and run driver; so why not lesser offences?
  • Nobody really needs a 4x4 11 Jul 2003 (Forum)
A deliberatly provocative title, following Lib-Dem MP Norman Baker's Radio 4 interview. But really a tale of my own stupidity and perceived reality. I've had my old SIII Landy for about a year now, and it is now sadly off-road having been SORNicated by rust. During that year I've driven it off-road, on-road in thick snow, up-hill and down-dale all using the 4x4 drive which has greatly improved it's performance in those trying conditions.
  • Flat batteries & memory loss 18 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Slightly different to jump start thread & to a thread from early Jan 2002. I've had to fit a new battery last week & as usual radio code & electric windows lost their programming. That was all, as the car is a '93 model Carlton & has none of the later electronics as fitted to more modern cars. A friend later told me of a gadget that you plug into the cigarette lighter which has 2 leads coming from it, one is marked positive the other negative, these are connected to a 12 volt supply.
  • Crap accident excuses 31 Jan 2002 (Forum)
On investigation her father and myself could find no sign of residue on the road or skid marks at the scene. When I put it to her that she had simply been concentrating on the radio rather than the road she burst into tears and denied it (typical female reaction), even her father admitted this was probably what had happened! My moto is if you make a mistake admit it and learn from it!
  • Replace Passat PD 100 22 Feb 2025 (Forum)
Never failed me but my wife is a bit fed up with the strong old diesel engine smell on idle, the lots of little things that are going wrong (central locking, cd/radio, rust on wings, lack of heated seats , cloth seats (which is a pain with the dogs) . She also would prefer an auto and something a bit higher up. ...so she asked me if I can look around for a cheap,.reliable,.auto petrol SUV It will only do about 5k max miles per year and although tax/insurance not that important i would prefer sub £400 tax I'm hoping I get positive advice rather than friendly abuse ??
  • Autonomous driving light 21 Nov 2023 (Forum)
In future, there should be some way of communication across autonomous cars so that one can tell about obstacles ahead via some preset radio frequency.  We may even get autonomous driving lanes and human driving lanes. More useful than bus lanes which remain empty most of the time.
  • What to do with car for three months? 16 May 2022 (Forum)
But recommendation for a budget one (that is reliable enough to be left for 3 months unattended) gratefully received. I'll recommend she takes it for a good run before parking up and switches the radio and anything else off before turns off the engine. I could suggest she puts some extra air in the tyres, but they are so low profile, I'm not sure they actually have air in them :)
  • Hard Use Electric Car Range 16 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I'd be happy with a range of 250 or so miles but was reflecting on my trip this weekend from Kingston, W London, to Romford, East london. On the way back, at night, cold, wet, I'd have had headlamps on, air con + heating, radio, phone charging,  and stop and start driving for 2.5 hours - covering just 22 miles.I really wonder how long the battery would last stop and go with all the accessories on. Everyone seems to judge range by driving non-stop around the M25 - yet how many people do that?
  • Dream car? 4 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I have been thinking about what my next car would be and trying to decide what my 'dream car' would be. Sitting in traffic one day, I thought about my current car... it has a heater, air con, a radio, it's cheap to run, realiable and it'll get to 15mph pretty quickly. What more could I want when I'm stuck in traffic? I may have my dream car and hadn't realised it. There are faster cars out there, but it would be a waste for what I do.
  • Volkswagen Golf V TDI - VW MK5 Golf Won't Start! 9 Oct 2015 (Forum)
I've had a look at online forums but can't get anything specific to focus on, also I may add that the dash is completely out, the lights won't come on at all, the headlights, interior lights, radio etc still work though. Already checked fuses and they are all working fine, I'm baffled, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
  • Any - Plod's luxury cars 3 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I'm sure next time I scratch my nose, or lift my hand from the steering wheel for a second to change the radio that a black, unmarked ferrari will pull me over for a £60 fine....
  • Nissan Almera Tino 05 - Centre Console+Centre Controls+CD Not working 15 May 2013 (Forum)
So there I was driving along listening to my CD when the CD Player and Centre Display which shows the time, radio, Blowers etc when off.... The only life I can get from the Control Panel which is the middle of the two is the rear heater ... all other controls are dead... and the CD player wont eject the disk...
  • Ford CMAX 1.6 TDCi Titanium 2010 - CMAX CD player 20 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Some time later I was playing a CD and also had the heater on to demist the screen when the CD cut out and the radio came on. The screen showed a "CD high temp" message. I took the car back to the dealer with a photo of the error message and after a bit of hassle the unit was changed under warranty. The new one is little better and still toasting CDs although I haven't had an error message yet.
  • Arround School Zones Keep Driving Safe 2 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Many accidents occur due to driver inattention and carelessness like applying makeup, changing the radio station and focusing on other things rather than vehicles and pedestrians in the area.
  • Peugeot 307 2.0 Diesel hdi - Electrical fault - help & advice please!!! 26 May 2011 (Forum)
Hi, I've had a problem with my 307 that started today, all of the electrics appear to have failed, the heater is on full on hot but the digital climate control no longer works, the display is blank & the buttons do nothing. The main display is blank, the radio has stopped working, the dash display lights have ceased working, the mileometer has gone off, the speedometer & rev counter froze at the speed / revs that I was doing when the fault appeared.
  • Volkswagen Beetle - VW Beetle 1.6 (2003) ESP Light on 11 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Hello,  I am proper gutted. Only had my car 11 months and in the past month the radio has died ( sony one, so not really the cars fault), then it went into the dlrs to have the heated wing mirrors replaced, which took a week!! Then as driving it home the Exhaust Emissions light came on.
  • Buying an ex police car, merits? 26 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Against Mainly white in colour, hardly anyone chooses this colour through choice. low spec in most cases. dashboard normally has bits missing and no radio etc. Some of which is surprisingly expensive to source if you want to return to normal. Interior trim can take a battering from big guys in uniform getting in and out all the time. Are they thrashed from cold?
  • GPS/Sat Nav jamming. 14 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have just had the following announcement through via the UK Ham Radio news network (Of which I'm a reader.) about an incident that is going to affect sat navs in Scotland: "If you are driving in the very North of Scotland or the Orkneys between 6th and 16th of July, and your GPS system goes dead, it might be jammed, and the jamming is legal.
  • KIA Rio (2001 - 2005) - 01 1.5 Would not start immediately 14 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Upon turning my key the first time, the car turned over very very slowly but did not start. All the lights on my dashboard, radio, electric windows worked 2. Turning the key the second time produced nothing at all - the car did not turn over. All the lights on my dashboard, raio, electric windows still worked as usual 3. Left the car alone for two or three minutes 4.
