  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 96 1.8 Suspension/Braking 28 Jun 2009 (Forum)
(approx 1 minute) - What happens is that the "stop" light stays on for approx 20 secs, during/after which the brakes do not work at all. (depressing the brake indeed re-illuminates the "stop" lamp) - I pump the brake several times, and then the rear decides it wants to raise to the correct height. - I then test brakes...eventually they "bite" voilently (probably on third attempt after previous pumping having seemed to kick the rear of the car into life). - All is then absolutely fine.....ride is good, system remains pressurised throughout, until it has been resting overnight. - This situation appears dangerous, but we have just got used to it over the past year, carefully testing brakes before moving off completely.
  • Honda Civic - Worn brake pads and sc***ing sound 23 May 2024 (Forum)
At the last main dealer service in January I was told that all the brakes were around 75% worn so I planned to replace them all later in the year. Today however I can hear a grating noise on and off as I’ve been driving. Car is a 2018 with 33,000 miles on the clock. My question is: Is this grating noise the sound of the discs being damaged or is it a warning mechanism of some sort to tell me that the pads need replacing?
  • 118d - Weird brake fault? 29 Jun 2019 (Forum)
So I'm hoping someone really kind could advise me on this, I have a 59 plate 118d which I was driving and started to smell a burning rubber smell it was the pad so i got a new caliper from a reputable BMW breaker. After having the caliper fitted my brakes are now soft to the floor unless pumped? Was told mechanic had manually bled the system 3 times and was determined there's no air in there? Can anyone advise I would be very thankful.

  • Citroen C4 1.6 SX Auto - Snapped heads off front brake disc to hub bolts 24 May 2019 (Forum)
Hi All In need of some help and advice on what I can do with regards to snapping the heads off the two bolts that secure the front brake discs to the wheel hub on C4? The discs are in real need of a change and the said bolt were welded into the hub, hence why the heads broke off. Any ideas on what to do would be greatly appreciated.
  • Toyota Hybrids - Toyota Hybrid - Brake Disc and Pad Wear? 28 May 2016 (Forum)
Hi all, Rumour has it that the Toyota Prius eats brake discs and pads in an effort to regenerate the batteries. I'm looking at maybe a 10 plate Prius or a 12/13 plate Auris. Does anyone here have any specific knowledge of this on either the Prius or Auris, ie owners old and new or technical experts.

I wondered if I could get some advice please on a new Audi purchase. The car has 20 miles on it and I have noticed what looks like brake disk scoring on both back wheels. I wanted to ask if this is normal or something I should contact the dealer about. • Honda Jazz 1.4 2010 - Replacement front and rear brake pads 8 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Hi, I have been quoted £220 at my local Honda garage to replace front and rear brake pads on my Honda Jazz 1.4. I have had the car since new (2010) and have had it serviced according to the on board computer schedule. It has done 36,800 miles to date. Do you think that this is a fair quote?

  • BMW 3 Series Compact E36 - M.O.T. (competent or incompetent technicians??) 2 Aug 2013 (Forum)
My 7 year old car was MOTd in March 2011 and passed for 12 months. Last week I suffered brake failure due to corroded brake pipes. BMW have replaced the pipes at a cost of £1000. How can brake pipes become unserviceable within 3 months?.....or has the MOT been carried out by someone who is incompetent.?.
  • Honda Accord Tourer 2005 Petrol 2lr - Rear disc brake pads binding 5 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Rear disc pads on my Accord fail to release properly every now and then - not usually both at same time.  Calipers have been cleaned and checked over several times - brake fluid changed at  service last August.  Someone has said that the ABS control unit has been a problem on Accords - is this correct, and if an inherent problem, why hasn't Honda done something about it?
  • Honda Jazz Hybrid - How should it work 7 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I rarely see the battery driving the engine by itself, in particular if I brake the car gently in the garage the engine continues to use petrol.  If I brake the car with sufficient force then the "Auto Stop" kicks in and the engine stops until I take my foot off the brake, then it restarts but again using petrol !
  • Porsche Boxster 987 (2005 - ) - 07 2.7 Non-Porsche vs Other brand Brakes & Discs 16 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Hi general question, If you aren't using your porsche boxster around the track is t OK to swap the brakes and discs with non-porsche parts if they are suitable and to the same standard. Also is it OK to use an autocentre rather than a porsche dealership to replace pads and discs. There is a reccession on but I don't wat to damage my car or its value.

  • Ford Escort 1600 petrol 1998 - Brake fluid change 13 Sep 2010 (Forum)
In the servicing  manual for this car it recommends changing the brake fluid every 3 years irrespective of mileage, which I have been doing over the last 10years I've had the car. I am now told this is all old hat & is no longer necessary. The fluid I have been using is to Dot 4 spec, purchased  in the last few weeks from Halfords & is their own brand.

the brake light on the inside of the car on the rear windscreen has come loose and is dangling from its wires, still working. Is it a legal requirement to have a working rear tail light, or can i just take it off.
