  • VW Golf - Warranty on parts after car repair 7 Apr 2010 (Forum)
General question - I had a clutch master cylinder replaced a few months ago due to the clutch pedal getting stuck down on my Golf.  This cured the fault until a week ago when now it is back.  Car into garage and they feel needs a new cylinder again and said yes that the part is covered by warranty.  Gave me 2 options - take car to VW (part was apparently from them initially) let them take it apart and if found to be faulty the work will be free or (ii) they will do it, I'd pay in full for work to be done and the new part but then garage will send part back under warranty and reimburse me (but labour would remain payable).
  • Volkswagen Touran MPV (2003 - ) - 05 1.9tdi out of warranty major repair bill 10 Feb 2010 (Forum)
It suffered a breakdown 2 months out of warranty and it has taken almost two weeks for the dealer to come to some kind of proposal to pay for the repairs needed. The car lost power while accelerating around 50 mph and a cloud a black smoke bellowed out the back and all kinds of lights lit up on the dash, we stopped the car asap. RAC (via VW Assist) surmised that the oil seal on the turbo had failed as the engine had no oil remaining in the sump and the rear of the car was covered.
  • Need a car for £100 2 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Been leaning towards old examples of BMW/Mercs as in theory will have good engines but I don't really know how accurate that perception is. Simpler cars (Ford etc) will be easier to maintain or repair. Thanks in advance for any suggestions :-)
  • Insurance: declaring modifications 17 Mar 2006 (Forum)
As a few of you may remember, I ploughed my wife's Vectra estate into a kerb in the snow a couple of weeks ago. It turned out to be an insurance job. I have now got the car back. The car is an 'LS' model, about a year old when purchased. It had steel wheels as standard. Just after I bought the car, (it was a wedding anniversary present, ahhhh!) I fitted some SRi alloys to the car for her.
  • Manufacturer / Dealer Incomes 10 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Any other works will, in theory be covered by warranty so the cost will be met by the manufacturer (or dealer in year 3). So is income now more weighted towards car sales commission, accessories income, or is that why hourly rates at service depts are so high?
  • Expected Battery Life 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have just had a complete battery failure on my just over 3 year old Skoda Fabia 1.9tdi. The car was bought new and has covered 61,000 kilometers. Is this extremely short life usual? I know that usage patterns affect a battery, but in my case, the car rarely sits in the garage for more than three days before a decent shopping trip run of between 20 to 35 kilometers each way is done.
  • What's up with Vauxhall? 19 May 2004 (Forum)
An article on the Carkeys website is called "Goodbye To Vauxhall" -- see http://www.carkeys.co.uk/columns/rufus_j_flywheel/2896.asp It's intended as a "humorous" column, and it's not really my idea of funny -- too contrived and laboured for my tastes -- but central point is interesting. The writer says that Vauxhall are imposing onerous conditions on journalists testing its cars, as a result of which he (and some other journos) are allegedly refusing to test GM cars. Frustratingly, there is no info about what those conditions are. I can guess that they might be some sort of request not to conpletely trash the car, which would obviously scare off those testers who seem most interested in assessing a family hatchback as if it was a rally car rather than a covered shopping trolley.
  • Can an S-Class be run on a budget? 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Can an S280 be treated in anything like the same way? Surely a service every 9,000 miles is pessimistic and covers those drivers who thrash their cars. I NEVER race my car, I always let it warm on first starting and avoid short journeys wherever possible. I'd like to keep it for another 10 years, at least so I'm not really interested in keeping a resale value ... at all.
  • Renault Safrane 2.2 What to do? 11 Apr 2003 (Forum)
A short and unsuccessful attempt at legal action occurred and the situation is now this: I owe the garage 600 quid for work on the car + storage. However to get rid of it the Garage will dispose of the car for me leaving us quits for £160 + Towing Costs. The car is in theory worth 1800 quid in good running order. I have since bought a new car.
  • Insurance fun and games 25 Apr 2007 (Forum)
If I start the insurance after then the best quote drops to £650. Obviously this is a silly amount of money to pay for 2 weeks of cover. Does anyone know where I can buy two weeks' cover, possibly just third party, fire and theft, to bridge the gap until I reach 25 and the premiums drop by £400. Incidentally, the reason for the error was the car number plate search shows up as a 2.4T SE rather than the 2.5T SE it actually is.
  • Renault Austral - Vehicle Rejection Issue 27 Sep 2025 (Forum)
I purchased a new Renault Austral early 2024 on PCP. For the first year, other than a niggle with a fuel gauge issue, the car was amazing. Things changed a few days after the cars first service with the car having now broken down four times since then, in each case with the car being totally immobilised, and have resulted in the car being at the dealership for many months since January.
  • Volkswagen Golf V - Security system has disabled my Golf 3 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The remote would not even open doors. Looking at various forums I found out how to open the door (use key in notch below the cover to the rear of handle), I then jump started car. It initially sounded car alarm, but this went off. When I tried next time car started perfectly and everything worked, however when I had driven some miles and parked the car it would not start again.
  • Faults with cars just out of warranty 11 Aug 2004 (Forum)
In the last few months since the warranty expired on this very well maintained, average mileage recent model car, its cost almost £1000 in repair bills! This got me thinking about the Sale of Goods Act which states that goods must be fit for purpose, or something like that, for a reasonable period of time. Does this cover cars, and if so, what is a 'reasonable' period of time?
  • Your advice 14 Jan 2019 (Forum)
I can't make my mind up between the Honda Accord 2.2 (180bhp) or the Honda Civic either in the 2.2 / newer 1.6 engine. Economy and enough power are important, but only covering 20k miles per year I can't see 8-10 mpg difference making a huge cost difference over the year. Does anyone have experience with either car? An estate version of the Civic isnt absolutely essential but I feel I could use the extra space with the flat folding seats to sleep in for the odd night when I go traveling.
  • Renault clio - DPF cleaning during service 28 Mar 2018 (Forum)
I guess I know the answer, which will be pay the garage the £20 for having the DPF cleaned. The M6 is next to the garage, it maybe better giving the car a good 100 mile blast on the motorway. Regards warranty, is a DPF covered with a 4 year warranty?  Reason why I am asking, I have had diesels before, but I never thought about or questioned about the DPF.
  • Peugeot 406 2.0. Hdi fuel consumption 29 Dec 2015 (Forum)
I have two of the above cars, one I have had for five years and hs covered 246,000 miles and it generally returns between 50-60 mpg, over 60 mpg on a long run. I have just bought another one with 181k on it, in excellent condition and very welll maintained but its only doing about 45 mpg on the same journeys, they are both 2001 GLX estates.
  • Audi A4 SE 2.0 TDI Saloon (143hp CVT) - 2011 Reg - Any Red Flags - Audi Extended Warranty - Go-NoGo 15 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Hi All, My Audi is coming to the end of manufacturer's warranty of 3 years (End of this month) It has done about 31215 miles so far and I forecast less than 6000 miles per annum My quote with Audi for an extended warranty comes to £512 (0 Excess, Comprehensive, Without Roadside assistance) But wanted to take a general opinion of other Audi owners you had gone through the situation and know better - Is there any common red flags with Audi A4 2011 2.0 TDI 143 hp CVT (Automatic) that its better to cover with the warranty (For the miles I am forecasting and the miles the car has done so far) So far - My car has been maintained according to the Audi schedule and recently undergone MOT (Mar-2014) and a Full service / Oil change as a part of my service plan Any advice would be great Thanks S
  • Audi A4 1.9 tdi or Volvo S40 d? 15 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Good evening I am hoping you can help with a choice on my next commuter? Basically it is time to stop spending money on my VW Golf 115 tdi. I normally buy a car and run it untill the doors fall off so to speak! I have two choices of car as mentioned in the subject, but here is more detail. The audi has 200,000 With FSH, on a 04 plate, The volvo has 75,000 FSH on a 53 plate I know this seems to be a no brainer however a family member owns a similar audi and has covered nearly 300,000 miles with few problems.
  • Landrover Discovery - Best 4WD for new job! 28 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I'm starting a new job in the New Year which means I need to visit farms, estates, woodlands etc so need a vehicle that can cope with tracks, fields, woods, farmyards etc. Going to be covering the country so need something that is also comfortable after a 5-6 hour stint behind the wheel. Current car is a BMW 520 as I do a lot of motorway cruising and I'll be keeping it. I am a lady who is nearly 6' tall so need legroom and space.
  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2008 - ) - Reflection of fascia panel (top) on windscreen 3 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Needless to say, their demonstrator was not there at that particular time, but I did drive the earler Jazz loaned to me as a courtesy car and found the reflection of the fascia top to be rather annoying. On the new model, the windsceen seems even greater in depth and angle and I could see a some reflection in the showroom model with the plastic roof covered by the sun screen.
