  • VW Polo Knock 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
There is no blue smoke from the exhaust when I do the MOT type blue smoke test (rev to 2k then release) so I can't think it could be a broken piston ring. The car has done 142k miles. Would a broken valve spring or a burnt valve do this. Has anyone got any clues please? Philter
  • Insurance and NCB - blame disputed 18 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hello all Recently another driver hit me a glancing blow as she emerged from a side road. I have a dent but she says the cars never touched, so our insurance companies have two different stories. My insurance company now says that to progress matters I need to get the damage repaired so they know the cost they are trying to recover (I am fully comp covered).
  • Corsa 1.2 8v running cool 30 Dec 2004 (Forum)
The coolant hasn't been changed before so do I need to flush the system, or is the garden hose sufficient? The car has 80,000 miles on the clock so should I look for anything else to replace while I have all these bits off. Thanks Andrew
  • Where the hell does this wire go? Focus 24 Nov 2004 (Forum)
There appear to be similar cables coming from the battery and going to the air cleaner but I can't really see where this one should go. The cable in question is covered by a hard plastic coating and has a sort of squarish connection which obviously clips onto something. I'm not *too* worried as the car drives perfectly but I'm pretty sure it was connected to something when I last looked because it's obvious as soon as you close the bonnet.
  • 2002 - Punto 1.2 3 Sep 2004 (Forum)
If there was a probelm with the discs, would they of highlighted this on the major service? From the description what seems to be at fault? Would it be covered by a)the cars warranty, b)the parts warranty on the fitted pads, c)I have to pay for it and if so is it expensive? Or could it be a lubricant probelm? Also, on the service my rear bushes were running dry (a common probelm I believe) they regreased them under warranty, but the problem has come back.
  • Pug 306 1.8 XU7 Water Pump 24 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Question to any XU7 expert BRers, please: Is this the first sign of impending internal doom to the water pump (in wish case I will replace it), or is it likely to last like this for eons yet? May be the gaskets simply become brittle with time and heat cycling? The car has covered 25k miles in ten years, and right now I could do without the hassle of a Pug to fix! (I have a new kitchen to install instead!) Cheers!
  • Headlight legislation 27 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Apologies if this particular aspect has been covered before but I can't see it in any of the threads. I recently saw a VW Golf which had some sort of headlight modification so that when his sidelights were on, they resembled the angel eyes of a BMW 5 series' lights.
  • toyota vs. nissan diesels(+CHIPPING) 3 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I love driving and in an ideal world would be zipping around in a nice sporty number, but sadly not when I`m covering 500 miles per week!! So, I` resigned myself to less performance than petrol, but would obviously like something as good as possible. I`ve test driven a 2000(X) reg. Almera 2.2 turbo diesel and quite liked the car but worry about the sluggishness.
  • Yaris Exhaust 30 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I'd suspect not if stainless which is why I think I've been misled by the dealer. I also suspect I'm likely to be about 3 months late as I doubt it'd be covered by an extended (manufacturers equivalent) warranty. (I didn't need to get the exhaust done at all on my old Tipo and it seemed OK to look at even after I'd had the car about 2.5 years, so I don't really know how long an exhaust should last)
  • Wet Rover won't start 30 Mar 2003 (Forum)
All of the following is new in the last 12 months - battery, starter coil, all plug leads, plugs, distributor cap/rotor arm, vacuum pipes for starter sequence, air filter and the engine bay relays. I've also fitted a rubber coil cover off of a later model and cleaned all of the low tension leads from the ECU but all to no avail even after a liberal soaking of WD40. The car does several hundred miles a week, easliy passed all of its emission tests in last months MOT and when running is fautless.
  • Mike Rutherford 16 Feb 2003 (Forum)
A few weeks ago one of his ideas for easing pollution was to build more tunneled roads ! Apart from the massive cost , and damage caused by cut and cover , where does he think the pollution from cars in tunnels goes?
  • Astra alternator problems 9 Oct 2002 (Forum)
When I first started this morning the charge light was flickering on at idle speed and when coming to work the dash lights were not steady until approx 60 mph. When I pulled into the car park at work I was able to see the lights in one of the windows and there was clearly an alternate dimming and brightening of the head lights. I was always given the impression that the alternator should produce a constant output capable of covering all of the general electrics even at idle speed and this, to my laymans eyes, would indicate that there is an output problem.
  • Stupidity 30 Sep 2002 (Forum)
There are many reasons why we choose to use our cars instead of travelling by train and the latest, infantile, moronic, and distressing behaviour by Midland Mainline,(Part of National Express Group) is another. They are now sending out facsimile "Parking Offence Notices", with the recipients name and address printed on, and, at first sight, they cause distress and indignation.
  • to recon or not ? 22 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Hello, this is my first post on this splendid site, so please be gentle! At the moment i have an Escort 1.3 Hcs it's covered 74,000.(93,L) It's using oil, and visibly smoking upon start- up, however not when warmed up, having inspected the plugs all four are a light sandy colour. I suspect one or more piston rings has gone down.
  • Coolant loss, any idea's? 23 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The problem has become worse, to such an extent I?m loosing 1 litre of coolant every 30 odd miles, and I?ve stopped running the car. The coolant seems to be coming out of the expansion tank vent, and pooling on the engine protector cover. I guess this is happening because the system is being pressurised by a leak somewhere. A friend who works for VW say's he's never heard of this problem with this engine?
  • Traffic calming and houses 24 Sep 2001 (Forum)
However one house required two very large sleeping policemen to be negotiated to get to it. My Caterham wouldn't get over without touching the sump so couldn't buy that one. Even a normal car had problems due to the ramp angle. The top of the hump was covered in scratches. When speaking to the estate agent about it they said it puts off no end of buyers. It must have such a detrimental effect on house prices I wonder why no one has got rid of them - no where else in the estate has them on a no-through road.
  • Honda Civic - Battery terminal left loose ... 1 Mar 2020 (Forum)
After a body shop repair a couple of weeks ago, the car wouldn't start this morning - just completely dead. AA called, who found that the battery terminal was resting on the battery and making a very loose connection, not bolted on, and the terminal cover was sitting on top of the suspension housing a few inches away.
  • BMW 1 Series - BMW 2016 (manual petrol) won't start initially 14 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Car won't start as it used to. It takes a few times before it starts.  This has been happening on and off for about 2 weeks ago with the snow, I had left the car off for about a week. This hadn't happened in cold days before.
  • Audi A3 2002 1.6 petrol misfire ? 24 Feb 2016 (Forum)
I have a weird problem with my Audi A3, maybe someone has come across this before, or can provide helpful suggestions of where to look…. The car is an Audi A3 1.6 petrol 2002 with a AVU engine. It’s covered 280,00 miles but has been well serviced, there is for instance absolutely no cam wear and the head is yellow inside, not black. The car runs on LPG as well as petrol.
  • Dacia Logan MCV / Ford Mondeo - BHP & Torque 28 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I am a computer geek rather than a car guy so would really appreciate someone advising what these actually mean to me in terms of the above scenario.  My dad keeps saying to me that I need to get a 2.0L or 2.2L car and they are becoming rarer these days.
