Where the hell does this wire go? Focus - Adam {P}
Good morning everyone. Got a good one for you but first I have to set the scene.

Decided to check all the fluid levels, top the screenwash up etc... Upon doing so, I saw a cable near the battery which doesn't connect to anything. There appear to be similar cables coming from the battery and going to the air cleaner but I can't really see where this one should go. The cable in question is covered by a hard plastic coating and has a sort of squarish connection which obviously clips onto something.

I'm not *too* worried as the car drives perfectly but I'm pretty sure it was connected to something when I last looked because it's obvious as soon as you close the bonnet.

I understand the description is vague - if I can, I'll take a picture and post it on the MSN group. Any ideas how I go about this?

Many many thanks

I'll get the hang of this English some day:

I meant that the wire is obvious as soon as you open the bonnet - I haven't got that transparent bonnet yet.

It could be there for auxiliaries/extras you don't have on your car;if Ford made a loom for every combination there would be hundreds of thousands of looms;if it works,LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Agreed, I have a cable (1 wire) on my Mk4 Escort with a black spade connector on the end sitting behind the engine, and I haven't a clue what it does.

Sometimes this "excess" wiring can be to an advantage, a lot of Mk3 Fiesta don't have a clock at the top of the cetre consol, just a change pocket, but still have the cabling with connector behind to fit one. Same for Mondeo footwell lights ... www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=7189&m...e

If you're that interested, connect a multimeter between it and earth and see what switch makes it live.

Thanks for your replies. I thought that it may be an extra wire - after all - I have the wiring for the fuel computer and footwell lamps but the only thing discouraging me is that I am 99% sure that it was not like that when I last opened the bonnet.

It comes from the battery so I'd guess is not connecting to whatever it's meant to as opposed to not getting any power. I may try and borrow a multimeter - I had one years ago in my "taking everything to pieces and trying to put it back together" phase but God knows where it is now.

As JC said, it isn't broken - everything that you can switch on seems to work but I'm curious anyway.

Many thanks again,

I don't think the Focus is multiplexed, so note the colour of the wire, then ask you Ford dealer spares department to take a gander on the circuit diagram, or look in Haynes if there is such a manual. My local library has an excellent lending stock of Haynes manuals.

I may look in the Haynes manual given I asked for Focus brake pads and got given Ka ones.

Focus - Ka - they sound similar I suppose.
