Car security when parked in isolated places 14 Sep 2008 (Forum)
What does a police "covert capture car" look like? Does it have privacy glass, does it have a real or dummy camera visible within (or not visible within?) and do "covert" cars get broken in to? Would an alarm stop a thief in the middle of the moor with no-one around? Should you empty the hatch and uncover it and open the glovebox to show it's empty? -
Is this an insurance scam 27 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Have others experienced this? I can only assume it is a scam to get cover on a car for a few days/weeks to avoid the new cameras for automatically checking whether a car has insurance? The insurer (Zurich), my bank (Cahoot) and the police (Thames Valley) haven't really been very helpful in the matter. My bank suggested I do nothing as it only happened twice and just wait and see. -
Wednesday Bridge Chaos in Scotland due to Weather 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I rest my case for getting Jeremy to advise , no run, the Governments both N&S of the Border. PS I recently acquired a Garmin SAT-NAV to augment the speed camera detector / navigation aid one I acquired in 1969 (1945 manufacture date). One has a nagging voice but I refuse to be drawn on which model. -
Interesting experience at shopping centre 13 Dec 2007 (Forum)
This was a long wheelbase van and so the front wheels stuck out onto the road itself as the chevrons narrowed towards the centre line. The van had hazards on, and I noticed through the back windows that there were two cameras that appeared to have three lenses each aimed at the access road. When I'd parked I approached a police mobile unit sat in the carpark for the public to access and asked the officers if the van was anything to do with them. -

Council "Abandoned Vehicle" notice help? 8 Aug 2007 (Forum)
It's been there about 2 weeks. It is not with it's owner due to lack of parking facilities and Ken's cameras. Today I find a Council notice stuck on the screen saying in the Council's opinion the car is abandoned, and in 7 days the car will be destroyed. I've got the key, but I'm not the owner or registered keeper. -
MIB Victory 29 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Even if the premium was low I would see it as giving the insurance company money for nothing? Whole thing sounds like a con to me, whats wrong with using the ANPR cameras to catch those on the road? Another excuse to be sending out automated fines. How many un-insured drivers actually have the car registered in their name? Second point - they always bang on about the 'it costs £30 per policy' etc. -
Snooper INDAGO nav system 14 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I really need it to go in a shirt pocket or briefcase to stop it being nicked...rules out the tomtom because of the awkward shape. Also fancy the camera detectot side of things too.... Essentially, I dont mind spending a bit extra to get it right first time. You thoughts please?! Cheers! -
Advice on lock-up 14 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Driving home tonight I had a last-minute change of mind at some traffic lights (further than I estimated away when they changed to amber plus conscious there was a camera on them) so I braked - harder than normal but not excessively hard. Got quite a surprise when the car veered left and tried to change ends - luckily I controlled it without too much trouble. Now, I'm wondering what would cause this to happen? -
Driving a Foreign Car in Britain 27 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Several questions:- 1) Although the EC is planning on introducing a new regulation meaning governments have the responsibility to chase up fines occurred abroad by cars registered in their countries, at the moment I can stick two fingers up at any speed camera without problems????? Obviously if I get stopped by a copper thats different? What can a copper do to me as I have a Spanish driving licence? 2) From personal experience which route is better for crossing the Channel? -
Vidoetape evidence 5 Jul 2004 (Forum)
If nothing happens on my journey I just rewind the tape and record tomorrow's lunacies on it. A similar camera pointing backwards and hey presto, the tailgater gets it, though that might well cost a tape a day. I'm interested in the concept (I accept that I'm unlikely to follow this through into action) and what people think the legal position would be. -
How to reduce motoring stress... 24 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Hello Coming back from Gloucester on the M4 yesterday , I began thinking about how the Government could begin to put to good use all the millions of pounds generated by speed cameras. An education campaign on TV,Radio and in the press!!! Here's what they could cover: 1. Lane discipline - if the lane to your nearside is clear , then MOVE OVER! You don't need to sit in the outside or middle lane if lanes 2 and/or 1 are empty. 2.Lights - if its dark or raining , then use them.Check ALL of them each week (including your brake lights)to see that they actually work! -
Physical Speed Limiting. 4 Feb 2003 (Forum)
If it's good for PSV's and Lorries it must be good for all. A two stage switch for 30's and 40's would be even better. Camera's would be a thing of the past and within months we'd have a 95mph limit of roads. -- These are my own opinions, and not necessarily those of all Toads. -
A real anorak 12 Dec 2001 (Forum)
My answer was there would be nobody there after 4.0pm. Another thought was this was the precursor to cameras. Alvin -
Motorists being priced off the roads. 30 Aug 2001 (Forum)
The headline being 'Why politicians want us to own cars but not to drive them'. Makes sense i suppose. It starts: With speed cameras, parking fines, congestion charge and taxes, there seems to be no limit to the Government's ingenuity when it comes to making the motorist pay. But still the roads get worse and public transport is a disgrace. -
A Fine Mess - Motoring 10/3/1 12 Mar 2001 (Forum)
or is it still peoples right to speed? Speed Camera technology is improving very quickly and combining digital photography, number plate recognition software and Police to DVLA data links the issueing of speed tickets can be instantaneous. A new method of average speed photgraphy will elliminmate the heavy braking before an obvious speed camera box a the average speed will be measured over a longer length, ie one end of a village to the other. -
Subaru Forester - First 2 months and 2,000 miles of ownership 27 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Removing the prefromed tray increases the volume, but then you need to store the tray. Reversing camera can get obscured if it is raining and it attracts a raindrop! The ICE head is dated, and the Bluetooth set up is quite fiddly, changing paired phones etc and there is no keypad to input numbers directly, but the sound system is excellent. -

Following a minor collision in which the other driver accepted full liability has made me realise that I was lucky, especially when there were no witnesses....
