Passat Back Brakes 14 Apr 2003 (Forum)
hi all a quick one which i am sure has been asked before. My M reg CLTDI Passat just failed its MOT due to badly aligned and heavily worn back brakes. What would it be resonable to pay for this job in 1) VW main dealer 2) local trusted garage? Could i chance it and go to some quick fit place, or would this be very foolish? thanks -
Rover 220SD 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I have a Rover 220SD with a "Brakes" problem. The problem is the pedal goes rock hard and the brakes themselves are of very little use. The problem has only just started and it has never happened before. If I stop turn of the engine then restart the brake pedal goes back to normal. -
Cav MkIII petrol filler pipe/brakes 4 Oct 2002 (Forum)
After reading HJ car by car breakdown i have been enlightened to the fact that the petrol fumes I smell from time to time in the back of the car and boot, but with no leak evident, could be cracks in the petrol filler pipe. has anyone any experience of cost and difficulty of this job, either DIY or garage? any views on brake fluid changes and the extra performance this will bring would be appreciated, thanks Ellis -
Xantia Brakes 17 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Dear All, Thought I had read somewhere on this forum a question and answer about noise from Xantia HDi front brakes - but can't find it in the archive. Also recall someone saying that there was a "kit" which prevented this noise (much the same as a loose exhaust would make if catching on the body). Can anyone advise me about this "kit" - how much it costs, ease of fitment etc? -
Brake Servo - Rover Metro 8 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Am I right in assuming that all the current range of diesel engined passenger cars, due to the absence of manifold depression, are fitted with a seperate vacuum pump for servo assistance to the braking system ? Could anyone guide me on the siting of the vacuum pump,on a mid nineties Rover Metro diesel ? Is there a seperate vacuum pump and, is it driven off the timing belt ? Any guidance would be much appreciated. -
Brake fluid change 24 Jan 2002 (Forum)
It is usually recommended that brake fluid is changed every 2 or 3 years. When my car is serviced by the main dealer, they check the fluid boiling point. The latest service on my 3 year old Focus says the boiling point is 196 deg C, with a minimum allowed of 155 Deg C. -
rover brake light probs 9 Nov 2001 (Forum)
When he's driving along and accelerates hard (foot to the floor), the handbrake-on/discs worn dashboard light comes on, but works fine in all other respects. Any ideas why its doing this? Is it possible just the brakes are worn (although i thought the light would stay on permanently)? -

How long should a set of brake pads and discs last? 5 Aug 2022 (Ask HJ)
How many miles should the brake pads and discs last with normal driving on my 2018 Dacia Sanders? -
Toyota MR2 - brakes - hot rear discs 8 Mar 2013 (Forum)
However, since the two discs were changed they have both been running constantly hot - over a distance of 12 miles and moderate braking you can burn the skin off your fingers, and hear the tink, tink, tink of cooling brake discs after the car has stopped. The discs heat up even if I don't use the brakes, or use them very gently. The calipers have been stripped down twice and the handbrake cable adjusted as well. -
B6 2.0TFSI 2006 - VW Passat & Its problems.... 20 Oct 2011 (Forum)
I found a temp. solution to the brake lights which makes me think its the multi-function module which controls parking brake, cruise control etc and is locatewd behind the dash....when i start the car up the brake lights are always on, leaving the car on i remove both power connectors to the left and right, obviously the lights turn off and i get a warning on the dash, put them back in and they work as normal....but turn the car off, i have to repeat the same. -
corsa 1.2 - MOT failure brake application imbalance 21 Sep 2010 (Forum)
I'm wondering if anyone can make some suggestions as I'm a bit stumped with this one. My daughter's corsa failed its mot on ' 3.7.A.5C rear brake application uneven'. The readings given were: Front 300 300 Rear 90 160 Handbrake 120 140 I first stripped down and cleaned the rear brake and changed the slave cylinder as it was a bit sticky. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - yr2000 1.4l - brake pedal force (not ABS) 30 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Hi, When I brake in my car, the force required on the brake pedal often varies between journeys. This can range from it being almost like a non-power assisted system which feels very dull (I went straight over a small zebra crossing at uni when it was first starting to happen and I wasnt prepared for it!) -

Vauxhall Zafira B - Brake and rear lights not working? 23 May 2024 (Forum)
Hi all, my 55 zafira 1.6 life (petrol) has all of a sudden developed an issue I really can't seem to solve. Everything electrical works perfectly except yesterday I noticed the main brake lights had stopped working, bulbs are fine, all connections I can check easily are good and the high level brake light works? I then realised the rear lights are also not working (same bulbs) as I said everything else is fine, all front lights, hazards all round, fog light and reverse lights. -
Honda Stream CRV - Hot brake discs 27 Apr 2024 (Forum)
The rear wheels are fine but both front wheels are heavy to turn. I assumed both front calipers were sticking. However when I took the car in for a brake test on a rolling road (Kwik Fit) I was told that everything was a 'pass' including the 'brakes binding' test. The MOT is not due till the summer. Should I just keep on driving and not worry? -

Ford transit - Brake problems 17 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I have a 2010 3.5 tonne hi roof ford transit which has developed a worrying symptom. While heavy and trying to slow from motorway speeds, the brake pedal slowly travels down to the buklhead. This takes around 5-10 seconds and when the pedal is released, it resumes braking again. It still moves slowly down. It was in the Ford dealership today and they replaced the fluid.
