  • Old tyre advise 9 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Advice which I used to practice untill this car when I didn,t bother almost to my cost. When you get new tyres swop the best one for the spare, otherwise the spare will end up old and perished with cracked sidewalls about to give up the ghost. Mine went flat while waiting at tyre centre less than 15 miles and 24 hours from the time it had to be used.
  • Ford Focus Estate - 2017 Focus deals vs 4-5 year old cars 15 Feb 2018 (Forum)
Still returning 42mpg but the transmission slop is getting worse and it's developing a taste for oil gradually. I've had a good look round Autotrader and at discount new car websites. The cost of ownership for a 3 or 4 year old car and a new one is almost the same. The cost per month is within £10 - 20 between a 5 year old car and a new one. I'd be happy with a 1.0 125ps Ecoboost or the 1.5 150ps Ecoboost.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso - repair or retire a 12 year old 29 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Difficult decision time. My 13 year old Picasso has suffered a clutch failure. Looks like about £400 to repair. I have caah set aside for a replacement, is it best now to cut my losses and scrap the pic? It's got 90k on the clock, bought at 3y old by me and done a well maintained 5k ever since.
  • UK£5k: used Fiesta or new Panda? 8 Mar 2005 (Forum)
The wife's 8 year-old Fiesta is looking a bit tired. I've boiled down the replacement options to a choice of either: - Part-ex it against a brand new Panda 1.1 with air-con; - Part-ex it against a a 3 year old (old shape) Fiesta 1.3 special edition (alloys, air-con, 20k miles).
  • Taxing a vehicle 25 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The PO clerk told me that I could not tax the car until the day before the old one expired as I didn't have a renewal notice from the DVLA. Apparently you can't take the old tax disc in within 14 days of expiry to ensure continuous cover any more.
  • Temporary Insurance 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Am taking delivery of new car today, selling the old one privately - esure want £85 to keep the old one on temporary cover for a month (annual premium is normally £350). Is this normal and are there people who will insure it for a short period?
  • 3year old Vauxhall versus 6 year alternative brand 22 Jan 2023 (Forum)
I would looking at a particular Vauxhall, it was 3 years old, low mileage, small engine with turbo. The price of it was the same as a 6 year old equivalent from alternative Japanese brands (and it has higher mileage).  Honest John rate the Vauxhall Insignia at 3/5 Should I got for Vauxhall?
  • Windscreen scratches - 2002 Polo 22 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Could it just be because the screen is less upright than on the old car, or have we got a problem? For information: The car is a 2002 Polo, the windscreen has been replaced twice (once because of the scratching, but with no admission of liability, and once because of vandalism).
  • Older cars 19 Jan 2003 (Forum)
From HJ's piece, 'Trading in Older Cars Likely to End' (more EU rules) he concludes that "Basically, the value of any car more than 7 years old will be virtually nothing." For people like me who regard a 7-year old motor as just run in, I can't decide whether this is a good thing or not.

  • MOT question - buying car from Northern ireland 30 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I live in Scotland but have seen a car in Northern Ireland I'd like to buy. It's just over three years old, but in NI it will not need a MOT until it's four years old.  But I'm wondering that if I buy it and give the DVLA my British address I might not able to tax it as it's over three years old and no MOT.
  • Renault Clio Renaultsport - Cam belt failure, out of warranty. 27 May 2016 (Forum)
With a rough estimate of costs around £7500. Renault say it's not economical and have offered me £1000 towards a new car or a used car up to 3 years old. The cam belt should be changed at 6 years old / 72,000 miles(?). My car is almost 6 years old wit 24,000 miles on the clock. The garage have indicated the cam belt would have been changed at next service.
