  What happens next? The BMW squats down at the rear, and takes off like a missile. Half a second later, a huge puff of jet black smoke appears out of the back of the 'clapped out' SAAB, which then simply ATE the BMW! I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

  Re BMW recall, my X3 goes in next week. I expect a long wait. The dealer has warned me they have a backlog of 120 cars in the pound and no sign yet of parts coming through.

  is a working speedo an MOT requirement? I've looked at the MOT website linked in the BMW ABS thread and it doesn't mention it. The reason I ask is an MOT is due soon, the speedo's packed in and the sender is refusing to come out the gearbox.

  BMW 525T is pinking between 2-3000 Rpm in hot weather. Parts replaced include Vanos unit, lambda and air temp. sensors, knock detectors, ultrasound cleaning of inkectors etc. Any ideas really appreciated

  The bmw specialists had a look and decided to open the inlet manifold to check whether the swirl flaps had snapped and fell into the engine which wasn't the case and told me instead of paying them to open up the engine and finding out the real problem I was better off to just buy a new engine.

  We do want (or would like) bells and whistles, kerb appeal, prestige, and toys too, All the things you get with the top end of the range cars, so my question really is; Is it better to go for a slightly older BMW, Merc, Audi, VW with more miles on it, or a newer lower mileage 407, Mazda 6, Mondeo, etcetera? It's the same old thing that we want our cake and eat it. Obviously something has to give, and we wondered what do you think is the way to go please?

  I bought the car in 2002 with 86K from a lease co, and have added the remaining 82K with no problems. Full service history - BMW and more recently BMW indy specialist plus I?ve documented additional oil changes done by myself. Car has never used any oil, ever. I now need to sell the car and don?t have the opportunity to p/ex.

  SWMBO is so underwhelmed that despite finding my S-max too big and heavy, she has taken it over the BMW (the Fiat has gone back) and I am now climbing out of the black hole of a Bavarian drivers seat rather than elegantly steeping out of a Euro MPV. We want our Juke back!

  Today they told me they did not replace the tailgate controller, though last week I was informed this was being especuially manufactured by BMW Germany. I have questioned this with the dealer principal as being an engineer myself, I know you cannot just quickly manufacture an electronic controller, especially one for a car that does not have that feature!!

  Alfa - I am envious, but I hope that you're not paying for your motoring yourself. Any French car - why, why, why? BMW - if you've got it, flaunt it - even slap other people in the face with it. If your BMW is black with blacked-out windows, you are probably a drugs dealer. Daihatsu - you are an impecunious hill farmer and the rear of your vehicle is probably full of livestock going to market.
